outreach efforts.

Joe, Long Island Firearms’ Jacob’s Light Event Coordinator, reports a

very successful night readying care packages for our troops serving

overseas. Their service took place at the monthly packing event for

Jacob’s Light Foundation, headed by Dorine Kenny, mother of Jacob

thing.” He went on to say that he and his fellow LIF members

were moved by the experience. “We were physically

exhausted at the end of the evening, but it was the best kind

of tired. We can’t wait to do this again.”

Steve, Administrator of Long Island Firearms, was heartened by the fact

that this event grew out of a desire from the membership.

“In the short time we’ve been a community, we’ve done

neighborhood cleanups through the Adopt-A- Highway

Program, we’ve had a Blood Drive, and now we’ve helped to

serve our Troops serving overseas.”

He added, “Its events like these that help us to come together

as a community and help our neighbors. It also helps to

dispel the stereotypes of firearms enthusiasts so prevalent in

the New York area.”

FWC Extends Crossbow Season& Restricts Firearms Used OnSpring Turkey HuntsSEP 01, 2010 05:06P.M.

FWC Extends Crossbow Season & Restricts Firearms Used On

Public-Land Spring Turkey Hunts

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

Pensacola Beach, Fl --(Ammoland.com)- The Florida Fish and

Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) passed a new rule Wednesday

in Pensacola Beach that will extend zonal crossbow seasons by a month,

thereby running concurrently with archery season, beginning July 2011.

The FWC received requests from Florida hunters who want more

crossbow-hunting opportunities – not only more hunting days, but also

to be allowed to take deer of either sex, which is legal in many other

states, including Georgia and Alabama.

Because of the request, the FWC checked with Florida’s hunters through

an online poll, and more than 70 percent of those who responded

supported increasing crossbow opportunities on private lands.

The new rule adds 30 days to the crossbow season in zones A, B and C,

and it adds 33 days in Zone D, thereby making it coincide with the

archery season.

Starting with the 2011-2012 hunting season, any hunter with a hunting

license, deer permit and crossbow permit will be able to get in the woods

a month early on private lands and use a crossbow (or a bow) to take

deer of either sex.

This rule is intended to give hunters more opportunities and enable

youths and others who have difficulty using a vertical bow to have more

hunting days, thereby helping to recruit and retain more people into the

tradition of hunting.

The Commission also passed another rule that limits the methods of take

allowed during spring turkey hunts on FWC-managed areas beginning,

with the next spring turkey season (March 2011). However, all legal bows

and crossbows are still allowed.

The new rule restricts firearms to shotguns and muzzleloading shotguns

only, using shot no larger than No. 2. All rifles, pistols, buckshot and

slugs are now prohibited during spring turkey hunts on wildlife

management areas (WMAs), except on Joe Budd WMA, Raiford WMA

and Santa Fe Swamp Wildlife and Environmental Area. On these three

areas, muzzleloading rifles will still be allowed, because spring turkey

hunting on these areas is restricted to primitive guns only.

This rule came about after public-land turkey hunters and others

expressed safety concerns, prompting the FWC to ask Florida’s hunters,

again through an online survey. More than 75 percent of those who

responded supported the restriction on firearms during spring turkey

hunts on WMAs.

“If we can save one life by passing this rule, it’s certainly

worth doing,” said Commissioner Ron Bergeron.

Horus Reticle Options for Leupold Mark 4 12-40x60mm Tactical

Spotting Scope

Leupold Tactical Optics

BEAVERTON, Ore. –-(Ammoland.com)- Leupold’s Tactical Optics

Division announces the addition of Horus reticle options for the Mark 4

12-40x60mm Tactical Spotting Scope.

Now available to civilian shooting enthusiasts, law enforcement

personnel and other armed professionals, this Mark 4 spotter is the

standard Scout Sniper Observation Telescope (SSOT) of the U.S. Marine

Corps.

Horus H32 and H36 reticles join the Leupold Mil Dot reticle as options.

The H32 has a mil line for target measurement and speed estimation,

while the H36 features an inverted “L” in Inch Of Angle (IOA) for easy

ranging. The Mil Dot reticle matches those found in Leupold Mark 4

riflescopes, allowing a spotter to quickly range a target, view the same

sight picture as the shooter and convey necessary adjustments.

“Our Mark 4 Tactical Spotting Scope provides additional

flexibility and capability, making the users that much more

effective,” said Kevin Trepa, Leupold’s vice president of

tactical sales and marketing.

“This spotter is superior in terms of clarity, brightness and

contrast. With the Horus and Mil Dot reticles, it becomes an

even more powerful tool, giving spotters and shooters a

common frame of reference and measurement, so

communication is efficient and effective. It’s an excellent

spotter for observation and other uses such as gathering hard

data, ranging targets, estimating target speeds and second-

shot correction.”

Horus Vision

Other key features of the Mark 4 Tactical Spotting Scope include

exceptional ruggedness, light weight (37 ounces), a 100% waterproof

body and premium optics. The extremely durable armored magnesium

body allows for this variable-power spotter to replace the fixed 20X M49

spotting scope that was used by the Marines since World War II.

Multicoat 4 lenses coupled with a light absorbing interior finish suppress

glare and provide an extraordinarily crisp and bright image. Leupold’s

efficient Folded Light Path (FLP) lens and mirror optical system allow

the Mark 4 to deliver the effective optical path of a scope twice its length.

Even at the highest magnification, the Mark 4 offers an expansive field of

view, allowing for easy tracking and locating of targets. The generous,

long eye relief and rubber fold-down eyecups make the Mark 4 spotter

comfortable to use for the prolonged period often experienced by the

Marine scout sniper. Leupold’s nitrogen charging system and sealing

technology ensure absolute waterproof performance.

Measuring 12.4 inches in length, the Mark 4 Tactical Spotting Scope

mounts on a tripod and comes with a form-fitting, padded soft-side case

with easy access panels. The case, which has a detachable strap, can

remain on the scope at all times, eliminating the need for lens covers.

Leupold has offered precision optics for tactical applications since the

1985 introduction of Ultra riflescopes, which were designed to excel

Leupold Tactical Optics are in service with the U.S. military than any

Snow Goose Production Way Up, Strong Fall Flight Expected

WINNIPEG, Manitoba --(Ammoland.com)- Could a bumper crop of

snow geese be in the offing for waterfowl hunters this year?

Dr. Robert “Rocky” Rockwell, a biology professor at City University of

New York and one of North America’s leading authorities on snow geese,

thinks so. Rockwell says the summer nesting season in the subarctic

region of La Perouse Bay in northern Manitoba was “spectacular.”

“This is a huge production year,” says Rockwell, who was

concerned about nesting success after last year’s dismal

production. “This was the most bizarrely wet year I’ve ever

seen up there. The birds nested 9 or 10 days earlier than

normal, and as a result nest success was very high.”

Translation: Goose hunters are staring down the barrel of

what could be a banner fall flight.

“Predicting hunting can be a fool’s errand, and I never like to

do it, but the upcoming season appears to be shaping up

awfully well,” says Delta Waterfowl President Rob Olson.

“My message to goose hunters is this: get ready. The

migration could be packed with young-of-the-year birds.”

Rockwell agrees. He says high nest success means lots of juveniles will be

making the flight south.

“We’re talking about juvenile to adult ratios of 1.5 to 1,” says

Rockwell, “which means those puppies are going to be sucked

right into decoy spreads. Harvest always goes up when you

have a high juvenile-to-adult ratio, so I think there’s good

opportunity and I think it’s going to be early, because geese

are already moving south.”

Snow Goose Production Up

Rockwell says snow and Ross’ geese are foraging heavily on berries

inland from the Hudson Bay coast. Thousands are currently south of the

normal La Perouse Bay breeding range near the Broad River and are

staging all the way to the Ontario/Manitoba border.

The eastern arctic is also looking good, says Dr. Jim Leafloor, a research

scientist for Environment Canada who just returned from a banding

program on Baffin Island.

“We’re expecting good production on Baffin, for all species,

not just snows,” says Leafloor. “On South Hamption Island

it’s the same deal, so the eastern arctic seems to be doing well

this year.”

It’s a slightly different story in the central arctic. The migratory bird

sanctuary at Karrak Lake south of Queen Maud Gulf is the breeding

ground for 10 to 15 percent of the mid-continent snow goose population.

“Production of young at Karrak Lake has declined in the last

four years,” says Dr. Ray Alisauskas, a research scientist with

Environment Canada who’s been studying the colony since

1991. “There was later-than-average nesting due to delayed

snow melt and delays in nutrient storage, stemming from

reduced food availability because of very high densities of

geese on subarctic feeding areas.”

While nesting productivity is down, Alisauskas says overall populations

of both snow and Ross’ geese remain very high. The number of nesting

geese at Karrak Lake has grown from 400,000 to more than a million in

less than 10 years. A recent assessment found survival rates have not

declined since 1989, even with concerted efforts to reduce the population

through liberalized hunting regulations and a special spring conservation

hunt.

“This harvest is showing that it’s sustainable,” says

Alisauskas. “These birds are so resilient. You see video in the

spring and you say, ‘Wow these birds are getting pounded

quite hard,’ but when you look at the estimates of survival,

they haven’t changed in the last 20 years.”

Olson says their sublime taste hasn’t changed in 20 years, either. Delta’s

president isn’t a preacher, but he has become an evangelist for snow

geese, which he says are among the most underrated waterfowl species

for the pot. In fact, he insists they’re among the best.

“I don’t know where the propaganda started, but the myth

that snow geese are inedible is just that—a myth,” he said. “I

think they’re absolutely delicious—certainly not winged liver,

as some have suggested— and I challenge hunters this year to

prepare these succulent birds for their friends and family.

They won’t be disappointed.”

Bear Hunt With Kids Could Set World Record

By Troy Jens

United Special Sportsman’s Alliance Kids Bear Hunt

United Special Sportsman’s Alliance

Pittsville Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- “When I first

started this charity, I never dreamed it would become the

largest outdoor wish granting charity in the Nation for kids

and families who endure life-threatening and chronic

illnesses.”

Those words from Brigid O’Donoghue, the founder and CEO of the

United Special Sportsman’s Alliance, a strictly volunteer 501(c)(3)

charity that has granted thousands hunting and outdoor wishes for

children in over 34 states.

Excitement mounts as each year, the growing group of young hunters

head out into the woods on what will most likely be their only chance to

ever hunt a bear.

Many of the kids have critical illnesses, all of which are overcome by help

from gracious hunters who have donated their bear tags to them.

“There are no boundaries and no limitations here,” says

O’Donoghue, “It’s all about the kids and we make a way for

them”.

Land owners, guides and a multitude of volunteers transport, care for

and take these kids hunting. The donations from sportsmen make

incredible life-long memories everyone who is involved.

United Special Sportsman’s Alliance Kids Bear Hunt

Taxidermists donate the mounts for each child that gets a bear, helping

to keep the memory forever lasting in the lives of the kids and their

families.

The pictures, the videos and the mounts are often the reminders of some

incredible moments of sharing after a child who participated loses the

battle with disease or illness.

This season, 41 tags have been acquired, making this the

largest bear hunt ever to take place in the world.

Last season, 39 tags were made available and 27 bear were harvested by

the children who took part in the hunt.

O’Donoghue says, “I can’t say enough how thankful we are.

The families, the volunteers, even other charities have made a

collective effort to create this opportunity and to pass on

excitement and tradition”.

She adds that it is a massive effort, but the smiles and the stories from

the kids and from all of those who take part make it a very worthwhile

endeavor.

A Political Victory For All GunOwnersSEP 01, 2010 11:24A.M.

A Political Victory For All Gun Owners

A shining moment for California’s Gun owners who flexed their

collective power and made their voices heard!

DEFEATED:

• AB 1810(Feuer) – Registration of Rifles and Shotguns

• AB 1934 (Saldana) – Handgun Open Carry Prohibition

• AB 2358 (De Leon) – Ammunition Registration

California Rifle and Pistol Association

Sacramento, CA --(Ammoland.com)- All three of these bills posed a

fundamental threat to the rights of gun owners. And there was no room

for compromise any one of the bills.

It was a fight down to midnight, but in the late hours of August 31, AB

1810, AB 1934, and AB 2358 were DEFEATED!

This is a huge win for gun owners. Thank you to all members who took

time to contact members of legislature and voice their strong opposition

to these bills. Your collective voice was heard loud and clear at the

capitol. You stoked the fire against AB 1810, AB 1934, and AB 2358 and

it paid off!

If enacted, Assembly Bill 1810 would have required registration of rifles

and shotguns in the same way handguns are now registered in California.

Under current law, the information collected at the time of purchase of a

rifle or shotgun (serial number, make, and model) is destroyed after the

background check is completed. AB 1810 would have required that the

make, model, and serial number of the firearm, as well as the identifying

information of the purchaser, be recorded and kept on file by the

California Department of Justice.

If enacted, AB 1934 would have deleted provisions of current law that

allows a firearm to be carried openly in a belt holster. AB 1934 did not

provide a way for a law-abiding citizen to carry a firearm for self-

protection or other legitimate purposes.

If signed into law, AB 2358 would have required that ammunition

vendors transmit records of sale, information on the quantity and type of

ammunition purchased, and the personal information of purchasers

collected at the time of sale to local law enforcement if required by city or

county ordinance. AB 2358 would have also allowed uncontrolled

expansion of city and county ordinances requiring handgun ammunition

vendors to transmit all information collected relating to sales of handgun

ammunition and some rifle cartridges to local law enforcement agencies.

THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT AND HELPING TO

PRESERVE YOUR RIGHTS!

The California Rifle and Pistol Association “CRPA,” founded in 1875, is

dedicated to defending the rights of law-abiding citizens to responsibly

use firearms for self-defense and the defense of their loved ones, for

sport, and for all other legal activities. CRPA is the official state

association of the National Rifle Association. A California non-profit

association, CRPA is independently directed by its own Board of

Directors. CRPA’s members include law enforcement officers,

prosecutors, professionals, firearm experts, the general public, and

loving parents. CRPA has always worked to reduce the criminal misuse

of firearms and firearms accidents, while actively promoting and

organizing the competitive shooting sports and Olympic training

programs in California. We are proud to say that many CRPA

competitors are among the best in the world.

Elk Champion Jake Clark Inducted to Wyoming Outdoor Hall

of Fame

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

MISSOULA, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- Cowboy, outfitter,

conservationist and devoted champion of the Rocky Mountain Elk

Foundation, Jake Clark of Powell, Wyo., will be inducted into the

Wyoming Outdoor Hall of Fame on Sept. 10.

A ceremony in Casper, Wyo., will recognize 2010 inductees selected for

“significant and lasting lifetime contributions to the conservation of

Wyoming’s outdoor heritage.” Previous honorees include President

Theodore Roosevelt, Curt Gowdy, Olaus Murie, George Bird Grinnell and

many other names familiar to hunters and conservationists.

The Wildlife Heritage Foundation of Wyoming sponsors the special

honor and event.

An early and ardent supporter of RMEF’s mission to ensure the future of

elk, other wildlife and their habitat, Clark has been a standout

contributor to the organization’s conservation fundraisers. His donated

hunts, pack trips, mules and other stock have generated $460,000 in

funding for conservation. Clark also gives countless hours of volunteer

labor, leads the ring crew for auctions and ladies’ luncheons at RMEF

annual conventions, has served on the organization’s board of directors,

appeared on the RMEF television show and, along with wife Kay, was

honored in 2000 with the highest honor given by RMEF–the Wallace

Fennell Pate Wildlife Conservation Award.

“Elk country is richer today because of Jake Clark,” said

David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “Jake is a man of few

words but infinite energy and passion for wild country, and

we congratulate him on this well deserved honor.”

With leadership from Clark and spirited help from some 10,000 fellow

volunteers, RMEF this summer passed the 5.8 million mark in acres

conserved or enhanced for wildlife.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:

Snowy peaks, dark timber basins and grassy meadows. RMEF is leading

an elk country initiative that has conserved or enhanced habitat on over

5.8 million acres–a land area equivalent to a swath three miles wide and

stretching along the entire Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico.

RMEF also works to open, secure and improve public access for hunting,

fishing and other recreation. Get involved at www.rmef.org or 800-CALL
