Dear Friends,
A simple but heartbreaking statistic has driven our work this year: Tragically seven people a day in this country die as a result of a home fire. In Eastern Missouri, the region mourned as we lost three young children in the first of a string of fires that ultimately took ten lives in ten days. That senseless loss of life brought home what that statistic really means. It’s why the American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri has joined a national campaign to reduce fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent in five years. As you likely know, fires are our largest disasters. In this country -- in this community -- we suffer more fire injuries and fatalities than all other disasters combined. Our Home Fire Campaign is a two-step, labor intensive program, that targets at-risk, fire prone neighborhoods. Partnering with local fire departments, we install smoke alarms and educated families on fire safety. There is no doubt this effort will save lives and prevent injuries, which is the fulfillment of our mission. Last year, we installed more than 1,593 smoke alarms, replaced 228 batteries and helped 709 families make fire safety plans. Next year, we look forward to reporting how many lives this campaign saved.
While working to prevent home fire injuries, we continued to respond to them. Last year, we assisted 1,345 families after fires or other disaster. We also collected 161,960 units of lifesaving blood and assisted 1,417 military families with emergency services. Those services included connecting families with emergency financial or counseling support and emergency communications between military members in the field and family at home. We also helped 85 refugee families connect with loved ones abroad.
Building resilient communities, Red Cross volunteers also prepared the region for emergencies. Some 45,195 local residents took a lifesaving course in first aid, CPR, caregiving or water safety. Another 2,064 received disaster preparedness information, and our neighbors downloaded 10,202 emergency apps, so they have information in hand during a crisis. We know these efforts will save lives.
So, as we look back on this year’s milestones, let us close by thanking you for all you have given the Red Cross. For the tens of thousands we touched, we are honored to tell you how grateful we are. Thank you, once again, for supporting this noble mission.
Best always,
A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CEO

FY2015 PREPAREDNESS HIGHLIGHTS
The American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri provides vital services 365 days a year — from
responding to home fires in local neighborhoods to teaching first aid and CPR to collecting vital
blood and blood products. We’re able to provide these services thanks to an amazing corps of
2,482 volunteers and the generosity of donors like you.
Bringing the Red Cross Mission to Life
Installed 1,593 free smoke alarms for the Home Fire Campaign
Created more than 709 home fire preparedness plans for families
Taught 5,335 school children fire safety and coping skills
We’re ready to respond to disaster seven days a week, 365 days a year in our community, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. Eastern Missouri is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross regions that work together to mount large-scale relief efforts.
Home fires are the most common disaster for the Red Cross. On average, we respond to a home fire three to four times a day. Although these fires don’t typically make the headlines, they are devastating for those who have suddenly lost their homes, possessions and sense of security.
We also teach families, organizations and corporations how to be prepared for emergencies through free educational presentations. Last year, 2,064 people attended community disaster education and preparedness programs presented by the Red Cross.

YOU MAKE IT POSSIBLE
Though perhaps best known for disaster relief, the American Red Cross is at work every day to
make residents in our communities and neighborhoods — including military members, veterans
and their families — safer, healthier and better prepared for emergencies.
The Red Cross is committed to teaching people the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies. We provide lifesaving training that people need to protect themselves and their families, including first aid, CPR and water safety. We offer these trainings in multiple ways: online, traditional classroom settings and full-service courses where we bring the training to your workplace or organization. During the 2015 fiscal year, 47,263 individuals in Eastern Missouri learned critical skills through Red Cross courses. Some 36,605 people enrolled in first aid/CPR/AED, 8,130 people enrolled in water safety/aquatics and 2,528 people enrolled in other health and safety courses.
Supporting Military Families
Providing Blood in Season of Change
This year, the Red Cross of Eastern Missouri hosted a baby shower for military women and veterans. Military mothers received much needed supplies and a car seat.
From connecting deployed service members to their families during emergencies to supporting veterans in hospitals, the Red Cross maintains an unwavering commitment to the U.S. military community. During fiscal year 2015, Eastern Missouri briefed 7,831 families through the “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” program and provided 5,311 services to military members, veterans and families, including emergency communications.
The American Red Cross remains the nation’s largest supplier of blood products, helping trauma victims, cancer patients, people with chronic conditions and others in need. During 2015, Eastern Missouri collected 161,960 units of blood from blood drives.

The Red Cross is a federal instrumentality, chartered by the U.S. government. Our 1905 federal charter mandates that we
• Provide domestic and international disaster relief• Support military families and provide emergency communications
between members in the field and their families at home• Fulfill the provisions of the Geneva Conventions and
protect the victims of conflict
In spite of that charter and status as a federal instrumentality, the American Red Cross is not a federal agency. Therefore, we do not receive government funding to carry out our mission. Our services are provided at no cost and as a gift to those in crisis. While required by the federal government to address critical needs, the Red Cross relies on you to provide disaster relief and support our members of the Armed Forces.
