A Message from the Executive Director

On behalf of Hope’s Door and those we serve, I would like to welcome you to our Annual Spring Gala. We appreciate your generosity and commitment to our mission. We are pleased to honor Woodlands Community Temple for their devotion to helping the families of Hope’s Door live safer and more peaceful lives. For 33 years, Hope’s Door has helped domestic violence victims of all ages and from all walks of life make their personal journey from victim to survivor. No one tells our story better than the people we have served:

Miranda, an MBA career professional, once said: “When I left court, I had more than my order of protection. Hope’s Door had built a protective fence around me and my family. It was the first time in months that I felt I could breathe.”

Tammy fled to our shelter with her three boys. She told us: “I lived with abuse for seven years before I found the courage to call the hotline at Hope’s Door. I finally realized that we just couldn’t live like that anymore.”

Kristy, a 16 year old, revealed her abuse after a teen workshop. Kristy told us: “Even after my ex-boyfriend choked me, I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t know where to turn. I felt stuck. Then I heard about Hope’s Door. I not only learned how to protect myself, but, now I can help others facing the same problem.”

Crisis intervention is not enough. Our mission compels us to break the cycle of abuse that is threatening one in five girls before high school graduation. Last year, we empowered 10,481 teens through our “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” program, which includes the STAR peer leadership component. STAR leaders promote healthy relationships based on equality, respect and trust.

Thank you for being with us this evening and supporting our work. You make words like these from survivor Elizabeth possible: “Hope’s Door has given me the courage and hope I never had before and has helped me become the woman I was meant to be – strong, courageous, and most of all free.”

Page 4: Annual Spring Gala

The Board of Directors and The Friends Committee pay tribute to the staff of Hope’s Door. Their kindness, compassion, and dedication to assisting women and their children achieve safety, independence, and a more peaceful life is an ideal we can all salute. Thank you for all you do for Hope’s Door clients, their children, and our Westchester County community.

Gala Sponsors 2013 HonoreeWoodlands Community Temple

We honor Woodlands Community Temple for their extraordinary service and support to women and children leaving the Hope’s Door shelter. For more than five years, the members of the temple’s Domestic Abuse Task Force have stepped in when a family is preparing to move into a home of their own and have made sure that each family has what they need to begin their new life. They have provided everything from pizza the first night in the new home to beds, bedding, toys, TV’s, appliances, a microwave, cleaning supplies and food in the cupboards. Throughout the year, they respond to our special appeals with everything from legal services to new clothes for the children.

The Woodlands Community Temple is a place that provides for the educational and spiritual needs of its membership while at the same time enlisting its congregants to do good works that benefit an ever more complicated world.

Their good works are accomplished through three task forces – Domestic Abuse, Project Isaiah, and Advocacy – along with other independent initiatives. The Domestic Abuse Task Force was formed in 2008 when an interfaith group in Greenburgh brought the issue to the attention of Woodlands Community Temple. Since then, they have teamed up with Hope’s Door and are always ready to lend a hand – not only by providing transitional assistance to the families leaving the shelter but also in monitoring their progress and emerging needs in their new community.

We salute Woodlands Community Temple and gratefully acknowledge all they have done to let our shelter residents know that there are people in the world who care about them and want to help them rebuild their lives.
