Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am pleased to present to you this Stewardship Report - the first of what I hope will become an annual tradition. You will find in this report some information on the pastoral activities and financial status of our parish. Many of our parishioners come to Mass on the weekend unaware of the many ministries that our parish undertakes each and every day. We are a campus that almost never sleeps and the variety of classes, meetings, study groups, and recreational activities that take place here is quite a challenge to schedule! St. Francis of Assisi is truly a wonderful parish that serves those within our parish boundaries and beyond. In these pages you will note the overall financial health of our parish. Thank you for your financial sacrifices that make this possible. I am continually humbled by how many generous parishioners we have who so willingly share their time and their treasure with others. St. Francis of Assisi is blessed to have adequate resources that enable us to meet not only our regular expenses but also to serve God’s kingdom in a variety of areas. Let me assure you that our parish is living within its means – and we are making every effort to be good stewards with the generous donations from our parishioners – but you should also be aware that, like you, we sometimes make tough choices in how we can best serve God and our brothers and sisters with the resources that we have. For example, this report shows that approximately one-fourth of our income goes toward retiring our debt. It is our largest single expense. As you will see, we have made great progress toward reducing our indebtedness, but we still have a good way to go. Furthermore, as our buildings age, we will need to devote even more of our financial resources toward maintenance and repairs – which means that the sooner we are able to relieve ourselves of our debt obligations, the better off we will be. We have also included a report on the financial health of our parish school. As with any school – especially a quality school like ours – the majority of our income is from tuition and the majority of our expenses are for salaries and benefits. We could not maintain a quality faculty or a low student-to-teacher ratio without such expenditures. Yet technology is moving forward and we must ensure that our students are well-prepared for the world that they will enter. We are constantly attempting to upgrade our hardware, software and computer learning opportunities – and we expect to make further exciting announcements for the 2015-2016 school year. So as great as our school is – we must continue to make it better. I hope you examine as well the statistics included in this report. As you can see, we welcomed many infants and adults into our faith over the past year, nurtured the faith of those already baptized through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, served both children and adults through programs of Lifelong Faith Formation, walked with many of our parishioners who were sick or dying, and comforted those who mourned. I am very grateful for the many ways the St. Francis of Assisi parish family serves the kingdom of God and I thank you for your prayers and support. Pax et bonum, Reverend Robert W. Christ instituted the sacraments of

the new law. There are seven:

Baptism, Confirmation, the

Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing

of the Sick, Holy Orders and

Matrimony. The seven sacraments

touch all the stages and all the

important moments of Life in

Christ: they give birth and

increase, healing and mission to

the Christian’s life of faith. There is

thus a certain resemblance

between the stages of natural life

and the stages of the spiritual life.

The following number of parishioners

received Sacraments this year:

In September 2013, St. Francis of Assisi held a “Ministry Fair” which introduced many of our ministries and activities to our larger parish community. As a result of that fair, many of our ministries saw increased participation. The Confraternity of Christian Mothers, which had been dormant for more than a year, has found new life and is now meeting monthly. In 2013-2014, we introduced “Forward in Faith,” a program that offered 38 hours of Adult Faith Formation classes to our parishioners and visitors from other parishes. In response to the requests of numerous parishioners, our 2014 annual festival was returned to its original “Oktoberfest” theme. We continue to look for ways that will make this festival self-sufficient.

“Because they have given life to their children, parents have a most serious obligation and

enjoy the right to educate them; therefore Christian parents are especially to care for the

Christian education of their children according to the teaching handed on by the

Church,” (Canon Law 226.2). St. Francis Parish assists parents in the faith formation and

education of their children, providing opportunities to learn more about what we, as

Catholics believe and how we practice our faith, as followers of Jesus Christ. The following

information details the participation of our parishioners in Faith Formation this year.

In October, we welcomed

Bishop Steib who prayed the

rosary with our students.

2013-2014 Income and Expenses

Thank you to the 1,508 of 2,698

registered families who financially support our parish and ensure the

continuation of our parish mission and purpose.

Your generosity, for example, helped

us to pay monthly utility bills that averaged $9,017. We spent $48,800

last year on insurance premiums.

As our buildings age, we spend an increasing amount each year on

maintenance and repairs. In the 2013-2014 fiscal year, we had to devote a

large portion of our budget to our heating and air conditioning units —

replacing 9 complete units, 2 heat exchangers and 1 compressor.

In the current fiscal year, we have

replaced the shingled portions of the Parish Life Center roof, repaired the

ceiling in the nave, and are in the process of replacing one of the larger heating and air conditioning units

serving the PLC. In addition, we recently upgraded our sound system

in the church and are in the process of upgrading our security camera

system. And we are constantly challenged to stay current with our

office technology.

Debt Balance as of June 30, 2014Since the inception of the

“Enriching Our Future III” campaign in 2010, St. Francis

parish has been able to reduce its outstanding indebtedness by two-

thirds—a total of $2,447,606. The monthly payment of principal and

interest is $42,419. Last year, your contributions to the EOF

campaign represented 65% of our debt payments. We will need your

continued support of EOF in 2015 and beyond to ultimately retire our

debt and adequately maintain our facilities.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School

is the largest Catholic elementary

school in the State of Tennessee.

Our goal is to provide an education-

al environment steeped in the Cath-

olic tradition – an environment that

promotes learning and spiritual

growth for each of our stu-

dents. Our administration, staff,

and faculty care about our students

and work hard to offer them an

excellent Catholic education.

We have a dedicated school

community, including parents who

are actively involved in their chil-

dren's education and spiritual

formation. The leadership of SFA

works to collaborate with our par-

ents in this important work. In the

spirit of the New Evangelization, we

recognize that together we are

forming disciples for a digital age.

Our parish family strives to bring

the message of the gospel to the

greater Cordova community – and

the "Blue Ribbon" education offered

at SFA is an important aspect of

our witness of faith. Indeed, we

offer a superior academic educa-

tion. In the 2014-2015 school year,

we are introducing more technolo-

gy into all of our classrooms in

preparation for launching one-to-

one computing to our middle school

in the Fall of 2015. It is an exciting

time to be involved in Catholic edu-

cation.

As the charts to the right show, we

are heavily dependent on tuition for

our income. As the parish reduces

and eliminates debt, we hope that

parish subsidies can help to make

our parish school more affordable

for our families.
