Open Source: Completely free to use on as many computers and for as many users as necessary. Includes access to the current source code.
Alpha/Beta/Release Candidate (RC): A precursor to the next release version of a software package. Will likely contain bugs and is often unstable. Companies release these versions to help find these errors and correct them before release. Use at your own risk!
Software Versions

As version numbers get large, many companies have switched to years (Microsoft Office 2013)
Other Versioning: Service Pack: A large collection of software fixes.
Usually numbered sequentially.
Build Number: A numbering system beyond the minor upgrade. Often represented as 2.1.8196
Install software by inserting the CD/DVD or by clicking on the downloaded icon. Installation Wizard will
step you through the process
Always use the uninstall program that comes with your software. Usually this is found under the Control Panel – Programs and Features application.
