NATURE’S LESSONS
Believe one who has tried, you shall find a fuller satisfaction
in the woods than in books. The trees and the rocks will teach
you that which you cannot hear from the masters. —St. Bernard of Clairvaux
April 19, 2015
3rd Sunday of Easter
“Jesus himself stood among them and said to them,
‘Peace to you.’ But they were startled and fright-
ened.” - Luke 24:36-37
Throughout the day we have many opportunities to
“see the face of Jesus” in others and provide some
“peace” in their lives. Just because the person is a
stranger, maybe looks different than us or is someone
we don’t particularly care for doesn’t let us off the
hook. Ponder this!
Jesus resurrected body was immortal. The disciples
touched Him, He ate food, He appeared and disap-
peared at will. This is the kind of body we will be giv-
en at the resurrection of the dead (see 1 Corinthians
15:42-50).

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Next weekend the Church throughout the world prays
for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the
Lord for more Vocations to the priesthood and religious
life?
* Pray for the priests who have ministered to you
throughout your life, both living and dead.
*Keep your parish priest in your prayers throughout
this week.
* Encourage your children, grandchildren and other
young people to consider a vocation as a priest or reli-
gious brother or sister.
*Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our
diocese to respond to God’s call.
Help for Nicole Callais and Family
Thank you to everyone who has donated items of dia-
pers and formula to the Callais family. This past week an
email was sent out about Nicole ,who after giving birth,
had an allergic reaction to the amino fluid from the baby
which caused her to seize and flat line (Amniotic Fluid
Embolism). The doctor worked 30 minutes to revive her
and she was flighted to Georgia Regents Hospital in Au-
gusta. I spoke with a family member on Thursday and
they are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayer
from the community. They have asked now that size 2
diapers or above be donated along with gift cards for gas
or for Walmart if possible. The family is driving every-
day back and forth from Regents hospital and it is be-
coming very costly. Nicole has had her eyes open, and
all organs seem to function properly, she even feels pain.
However, they do not know the extent of damage yet.
Please continue to keep this young family in your pray-
ers. Donations will be accepted thru the 1st of May and
can be brought to the office or put in the lobby of the
church during Mass.
--Thank you

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Easter season well under way, we now resume
our survey of the sacrament of the sick. The pastoral
care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from
the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sun-
day assembly, from which the sick person has been sep-
arated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is giv-
en expression in prayer and service. The goal is to ex-
tend the consolation of the Lord’s presence at the table
to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to
enfold them in prayer.
Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the
Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing minis-
ters dispatched to the sick from Mass every Sunday
might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can
also receive Communion. Witnessing the anointing of a
woman facing surgery might help another person to
overcome hesitation and ask for the sacrament’s healing
and strength. Society’s impulse may be to marginalize
the sick, but the tradition of our community is to see
them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors
ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jew-
els of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the
sick and the infirm and announced with all humility,
“Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of
Christ.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE
One of the wonderful things about vacations is the
time we spend two or three weeks afterward savor-
ing the experience, sharing vacation photos and
memories with our family and friends. This kind of
reflection puts us back in touch with the original ex-
perience and reminds us of the relaxation and won-
der the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third
Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with re-
minders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago. All
three readings are reflections on the meaning of the
death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads
running through these reflections is that the purpose
of the Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection was
to save us, to forgive our sins. We are given fifty
days to ponder this reality—fifty days to savor the
experience of Christ’s dying and rising for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
