PROBUS Club of Port Perry Club Banner Competition

Not just another competition… we need your input to make our Club Banner stand out with our very own slogan and represent why our members come out to events and meetings. The banner stand will be a roll up table top style with the Port Perry PROBUS logo in the top third so we have an area below to imprint with a “catchy, “short”, “jazzy” and “energetic” slogan/statement. As an example some of the types of words that might be used are:

Fun, friends, active of mind and body, enjoy, friendship, social, feel, travel, events, open, something for

everyone

Here are some examples of other PROBUS club slogans: Where age doesn’t keep us from thinking young! (Collingwood) Get connected stay connected (Clarington) Celebrating Fun, Friendship and Fellowship (West Hamilton)

Hope all you wordsmiths are up to the challenge!

A prize of a $25 gift certificate for the winning slogan/statement! We need your entry submitted by May 8, 2017 to be announced at the next meeting on May 16th preferably by email attention Linda Schell [email protected] or by telephone to Janet Casey at 905-831-3991, Evelyn McKenzie at 905-432-4948, or Linda at 905-242-8877(away April 24 to May 2.)

Notice of May’s Speaker May 16th, 2017

Dave Patterson The Myth of 1492: How We've Missed the Boat about American Indians and How Each of Us Can Make Things

Better. The myth we have about American Indians (a.k.a. the indigenous, First Nations, Native Americans, Aztecs, Incas, etc.) tells us that they were and are poor, backward, and primitive; they need to be dealt with, pitied, ignored, or helped. But American Indian civilizations are much richer, more mature, smarter, and more valuable than we've been told. The cultures that thrived from the North Pole to Tierra del Fuego before sixteenth century had huge impact and gave important gifts to the rest of the world. Largely unknown now, these societies gave us the keys to unlock the modern age: deep democracy and freedom, commerce for mutual benefit, and cultivation of world-changing staples like potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. Seeing these people in this new light, we can take new steps to improve our relationships, solve long-standing problems, and thrive better together. Everyone can play a valuable part and it's not that hard.

Interest Groups – PROBUS Club of Port Perry Now that the winter Snowbirds and travelers are back from the warmer climates, many more members are asking about interest groups and especially about some of the groups that have not yet been started. So here are a few that have an active interest but no Coordinators to get them going:

• Investment Group • Wine Tasting Group • Wine Making Group • Scotch/Whiskey/Beer Tasting Group • Cultural Event Group (movies, museums, galleries, concerts) • Beginners Acting for Theatre • Motorcycling

If you would like to coordinate or co-coordinate any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know at [email protected] or 647-521-2565. Tim will help you contact the interested members, advertise the group to the membership and get the group going. You don’t have to be an expert in the area, only someone who has an interest in it and a willingness to help organize the group. All we need are some volunteers. This is a great way to meet new friends and support your fellow members at the same time. And it’s actually not that much work nor does it take much time. As regards another potential interest group, we already have several Breakfast Clubs operating during the workweek. However, it has been suggested that perhaps there might be interest in starting a weekend Breakfast Club since a number of restaurants in the area serve breakfasts on the weekend but not during the rest of the week, and some people might prefer weekend breakfasts out. So if you are interested in such a group, please let us know. Hopefully one of those interested individuals would be willing to coordinate the group. A few of our interest groups already have Coordinators from late last fall, but since the Snowbirds were just heading out at that time, the Coordinators have been waiting until the bulk of the membership was back in town before starting up the groups. These groups are ready to go and just need a few more members to get the fun started. There’s some information on the groups in the update material below. So contact the group coordinator or Tim Casey. The groups all set to start up are: Poker - Norm Sanford [email protected]; 905-441-1490 Music Jam - Bill Walker [email protected]; 905-985-9673 We have a lot of long-standing interest in getting a theatre interest group going in order to go to various theatrical shows locally in Durham and other nearby areas, in Toronto and perhaps farther afield (e.g. Niagara on the Lake, Stratford, Kingston, etc.) and to socialize at the same time. These are some of the most popular groups in other PROBUS clubs. Janet and Tim Casey are prepared to try to get the group underway, but we’ll need one or two co-coordinators to help out. So if you have an interest in seeing theatre productions and helping out with some organizing, please contact Tim at [email protected] or 647-521-2565

April 2017

One thing that’s great about our PROBUS interest groups is their flexibility. Some have largely the same people attend each meeting while others see some new faces at every meeting. Some groups suspend operations during the winter due to weather or Snowbirds heading out of town. Others see people attending more during the summer while at the same time some other group members head off to the cottage. Some go from a few members attending a session to many attending another session in the space of a month or two. There’s no required attendance for anyone. Group members attend as they wish, and we ask only that they RSVP to emails announcing the time and place so the coordinator can know how many people to expect at a meeting. You can join as many interest groups as you want, and most of them have no cost to participate. It’s fun, you meet new friends and you’ll definitely encounter new experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing you at some of our many interest groups this year.

Hiking Group – Bill Morrison [email protected]; 905-439-0484

During March we had 3 hikes, in spite of continuing unpredictable weather. We're looking forward to some drier weather in the coming months to enhance the choices for hiking venues.

Our opportunities for outings have been expanded. The Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Walking Group has invited us to join them on their walks each Monday morning. This offers additional or alternative activity for our members. The Whitby walks are shorter than ours (1 hour versus our 2- 2.5 hour hikes) and are in urban settings, usually on the Lake Ontario waterfront, while our hikes are primarily held in rural, often forested, settings. Earlier in the winter we had also invited any interested Whitby/Brooklin members to join us on our hikes, so additional benefits are now available to members of both clubs.

I have deliberately avoided scheduling anything on the Easter weekend. We can continue in early May, at the rate of about 2+ walks per month.

Check the PROBUS calendar or contact Bill Morrison at [email protected] or 905-439-0484 for information on any of the hikes.

Travel Group – Judy Spring [email protected]

The April meeting of the Travel Interest Group was held on April 6th and the subject was Australia and New Zealand. The next meeting on Staycations will be held on Thursday, May 4th at Colonel Mustard’s from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. This will allow our members to share ideas for summer vacations in Ontario. Please RSVP to Judy if you plan to attend.

Open Studio - Art - Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905-773-2878 At this point, the attendance of this initial group of 10 members has fluctuated but is moving forward with most still looking forward to forming a strong group. Life does get in the way of our best intentions and dreams for this stage of our lives, so time out is needed here and there. Nevertheless, the purpose of this group remains the same - people wanting to share their love of art, making time for their own expression of an art medium and slowly building upon the ideas of what we might do as a group (i.e. guest artists, exploring something new, sharing skills, resources). New members are welcome, regardless of your level of proficiency as an "artist". This group is in the spirit of PROBUS for anyone who wants to find a safe, fun place to share art, get back into art or for the first time has a budding interest in art. Group members Phil Wooding and Elaine Gillingham painted the three works portrayed. The rest of us continue to work away at various

personal projects or objectives. Marsh Hill Snowscape by Phil Wooding

Healthy Eating Group – Suzanne Redford [email protected]; 416-573-0597

The Healthy Eating Club will have our next scheduled meeting on April 27th at Prince Albert Hall at 1:00 PM. Cost is $10.00 and the topic will be “Dehydration”.

Breakfast (Mixed) Group – Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905-986-4078

All Breakfast Clubs aim to have at least 6 members attend a breakfast once a month and enjoy pleasant conversation and company. The choice of restaurant will vary.

*** We are looking for additional coordinators OR assistants to help manage the Tuesday and/or Wednesday Breakfast Club. It requires very little time each month. Duties include contacting members by email or phone and calling the restaurant to make reservations. Please contact Mary-Anne if interested.

*** The Wednesday Breakfast Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The next meetings will be May 3rd, 2017 and June 7, 2017. New members welcome.

The Thursday Breakfast Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The next meetings are April 13, May 11 and June 8, 2017. The Club is currently full but a waiting list could be started.

The Tuesday Breakfast Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month and will meet on April 25th, May 23rd and June 27th, 2017. The Club is also currently full but a waiting list could be started.

Members are requested that they record future meeting dates provided and RSVP to the email notice they are sent a few days prior to their next Breakfast meeting in order to provide accurate numbers for the reservation.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – Carole Matthews [email protected]; 905-982-2702

Our group met for dinner at the Hobby Horse Restaurant in Uxbridge on April 1st and had a wonderful meal and great conversation. The restaurant is family run, located in a historic building and the service by the family was exceptional. We’ll be sending a group email for details of our next meeting, and it should be listed as well on the website calendar. We expect a lot of members to attend our dinners from now through the fall, and many restaurants in the area only have a limited amount of room, so when you get the notice of the dinner, please RSVP early. If we get more interest than the number of seats available, we do keep a wait list in the event of cancellations.

For more information please contact me, Carole Matthews, at [email protected] or 905-982-2702

Grey Cells Matter – Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905-986-4078

Grey Cells Matter is a group dedicated to brain fitness by playing word games, doing puzzles and solving riddles in a casual, non-competitive and fun setting. The group is the equivalent of "Grey Cell Stimulators" in the Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Club. They have been operating for over 3 years and now have over 45 members. Both coordinators exchange puzzles monthly to keep the material new and fresh and expand our ideas for the sessions.

Our group meets the 2nd Monday of each month in the afternoon. Westshore Village has given us the green light to use their venue after a setback last month. Our next meetings will be April 10th and May 8th, 2017. New members welcome. By contacting the coordinator, Port Perry PROBUS club members may attend the group session as a "visitor" to see if the session is something they would enjoy and find beneficial. A small fee to cover the costs of photocopying etc. is required.

For more information contact Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected] or 905-986-4078. New members welcome.

Jazz – Barbara Wooding [email protected]; 905 985 7369 April showers are here so we hope Spring is on its way. The birds are singing and spring bulbs are poking their heads above the ground.

Our April events are only two, and I distributed handouts at the March PROBUS meeting. The April 23rd event at Jester's is sold out. Hope you booked early for Laura Hubert as Lynn has left on a well-deserved vacation to the Poconos.

The event on April 22nd at the Claremont United Church is a great venue. The Juno award winners for 2016, Mike Murley Trio with guest artist Guido Basso, should be terrific. Tickets are $25.00 each from Tracey May at (647) 982-4649 or $30.00 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Performance starts at 8:00 p.m. The church is at 5052 Old Brock Road.

At this time I have no news of happenings in May. Please visit the JAZZ Group table at intermission at the PROBUS meeting, the third Tuesday in April, and I may have something then.

If any questions please contact me at bwooding33@gmail .com or 905-985-7369 for more information re scheduled events.

Euchre Group – Ann Berube & Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905-985-7102 (Afternoon group) [email protected]; 905-773-2878 (Evening group) The afternoon group has grown to a group of twelve, enjoying our games, laughs over luck, and socializing afterwards. And we would still welcome a few more players. Please contact Ann Berube ([email protected] or 905-985-7102) if you’re interested. Our euchre members continue to get together and enjoy the third Tuesday evening (7:00 p.m.) of each month. The lower attendance over the winter prompted us to try euchre games with odd numbers and another card game with the smaller/whole group. With Spring approaching, we are looking forward to having our Snowbirds back. The spirit of socializing and no-pressure card games has this group booked for the next three months:

April 18th - Carolynne Padley May 16th - Jim & Margaret Adamson

June 20th - Carol Kingsley & Fred Tierney

Beginners Bridge Group – Judy Anderson [email protected]; 905-985-8719

The Beginners Bridge group has been very successful so far with players enjoying our weekly games and discussions of the various hands. Everyone is doing so well with the game, and we are more experienced with shuffle and play. Now that we have the basics under our belts, our group has become a supervised play format. We would like to add some more members to our group at this time, so if anyone is interested in joining us, please feel free to contact me. Just a basic knowledge of the game and an interest in getting together in an informal group is all that is needed.

Cards – Hand & Foot Group – Louise Bardswich [email protected]; 905-914-0677

The Hand and Foot group is seeking new members. Hand and Foot is a card game similar to Canasta. It is very easy to learn. New members typically catch on after playing only one hand. While it is a simple game, it has enough variety within it to keep it interesting. It’s also a game that can be played with 2 to 6 players. That allows the group to play weekly, whether or not the entire group is available. There are some members who show up every week, but others only come once a month, so the group is quite flexible. The group meets every Wednesday from 1:30 PM to approximately 4:00 PM. Meetings move around among members’ homes. For more information please contact the coordinator, Louise Bardswich, at [email protected] or 905-914-0677.

Lawn Bowling – Dennis Bayley [email protected]; 905-985-1342 The Lawn Bowling Interest Group should be starting up this spring, so please contact the Coordinator, Dennis Bayley ([email protected] or 905-985-1342), for more information or watch the newsletter and website. Golf Group – Dave Matthews [email protected]; 905-982-2702

The Golf interest group has suspended operations for the winter. As we approach Spring, contact the Coordinator, Dave Matthews ([email protected] or 905-982-2702), for more information about the group’s spring golf schedule.

Music - Ukulele Group – Andy Stevenson [email protected]; 905-449-0719

The PROBUS Ukulele ABC's (Absolute Beginner Class) have finished their fall 10-week training program and enjoyed a performance of their skills at the November PROBUS meeting. Some members are now jamming with the DUKES, the Port Perry based Durham Ukulele Klub, also led by PROBUS member Andy Stevenson. Congratulations to everyone for your great achievements. We will review PROBUS members’ interest again in the Spring. Board Games – Jenny Yorgason and Bill Morrison [email protected] (905-986-5441); [email protected] or 905-439-0484. The Board Games Group has met 5 times since starting up in January, and usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The next meeting is on April 20th. The group typically has four to six members at each session held in the home of one of the group members. Among the games played so far have been Sequence and Mexican Train, and even players new to board games have found it quite fun learning the new games.

Other Interest Group News BOOK CLUB - The Book Club is going well. There is room for some new members if anyone wants to join. Give Suzanne Redford a call 416 579 0597. LUNCH MEET - The Lunch Meet interest group meets for lunch immediately following the general PROBUS members’ meeting each month. The location of the lunch that day will be announced at the meeting. For any questions please contact Tim Casey at [email protected] or 647-521-2565.

MUSIC JAM - The Music Jam Interest Group is still looking for a few more individuals who play instruments and would like to jam with some of their fellow PROBUS members. Please contact the coordinator, Bill Walker, at [email protected] or 905-985-9673.

POKER - A poker group is also now being formed. Please contact Norm Sanford at [email protected] or 905-441-1490 for more information. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE TO MY EMAIL ADDRESS.

PROBUS Members - We Need Your Help!

Port Perry PROBUS Club members – Another reminder please. One thing all the members can help us with is that of responding to emails from PROBUS volunteers. For instance when an interest group is being formed, we typically send out an email to all of those members who previously expressed an interest in that interest area in order to gauge if each such individual remains interested in joining the group and perhaps soliciting the members’ opinions as to how the group might operate. In addition, an email is usually sent out to the potential group to schedule the first meeting. And finally, the coordinator often will send out an email to the group before each regular meeting to determine the probable attendance.

If you get any such emails, we ask that you take a minute to reply right away. When coordinators have followed up with people who did not respond to a RSVP email, the most common reason given by far for not responding is that with the high volume of emails they receive daily from family, friends, etc., they simply forgot to respond to the interest group one. So it’s best to respond as soon as you read the PROBUS RSVP email because otherwise you may miss out on some great activities.

If you’re not interested in the group, just reply with a “not interested” - we don’t need to know why and won’t take any offense at the shortness of the reply. And if interested, just say, “Interested”. If the email is related to scheduling a meeting, just let us know yes or no as to whether you can attend – again, no explanations either way are necessary. We want to keep this as simple as possible.

When a coordinator doesn’t receive a reply to an email, the coordinator doesn’t know if it’s because the recipient didn’t get the email or if there were perhaps difficulties responding. The coordinator is then left with the possibility of potential group members missing key information, meeting rooms perhaps being overcrowded or the need for the coordinator to do a follow-up call to the people who have not responded to the email. And this gets particularly troubling when trying to reserve tables at restaurants and seats at other events.

Our coordinators are all volunteers who already give of themselves to assist the membership of our Club. We need to support them by ensuring that their emails to members do at least get a timely response. And if you’re not comfortable with replying by email, please feel free to phone the coordinator.

Thank you for your understanding.
