When the blind man in today's Gospel reading heard that Jesus was passing by, he was overcome by a sense of urgency. He knew of the reputation of Jesus and heard how He had helped others. In his mind, they didn't say, perhaps or maybe Jesus could help. But rather his actions show us that he was thinking Jesus can and will help. The blind man knew this was his chance and that he was going to do everything in his power not to miss Jesus.

The blind man, in spite of his blindness, could see Christ for what He was. What exactly is Christ? In the words of the contemporary Elder Porphyrios, "Christ is Everything. He is joy, He is life, He is light. He is the true light who makes man joyful, makes him soar with happiness." If we see Christ the way that Elder Porphyrios does, then we would never want to miss an encounter with Jesus Christ. To miss out on Christ would be to miss out on everything.

    ~ Fr. Joseph

Q: A few weeks ago you gave a sermon and mentioned that Jesus' name was actually a

derivation of the name Joshua. Can you explain more about this?

A: The name Jesus is an English/Latin/Greek transliteration of the Aramaic/Hebrew name "Joshua." The historical progression of how this name was altered via those, who translated Holy Scripture, is depicted below:

    • YEH SHUA – (the Hebrew form of Joshua – meaning "Jehovah is salvation")

    • YEH SHU – The "A" is dropped because there is no Greek character for the Hebrew letter "Ayin."

    • YEH SOU – The "SH" is dropped because there is no Greek character for the Hebrew letter "Shin"

    • IE SOU – The Hebrew "Yeh" is replaced by its Greek equivalent "IE"

    • IE SOUS – The "S" is added in Greek as a nominative case ending which, indicates that the word is

    a name.

    • IE SUS – The "O" is dropped in English translations as found in the original King James Bible

    translation (1611 AD)

    • JE SUS – The "J" replaces "I" in later English King James versions (1769 AD)

But if you want to be rich – give generously, because whatever you give away in the name of Christ will always come back to you a hundredfold. ~ Fr. John
