PRAYER TO ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel
defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God
rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast
into hell Satan and all the evil

Mark 13:24-32
“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.”
Jesus used images from everyday life: workers in the fields; the birds in the air; the vineyard; shepherds tending their flocks, that people knew
well and understood to teach many truths. In today’s Gospel Jesus uses images about interpreting the signs of the times. He was not warning
about a cataclysmic end of the earth. He was teaching his disciples to be diligent in observing the world in which they live; to recognize the
ways in which they were not treating each other the way God intended, and the need to change. We do not like to change; to be told to change;
or the person who calls us to change. There can be dark times and tribulations when we realize we must change, and when we challenge others
to change. But, if we want to be all that God created us to be, and the world to be all God intended it to be, we must constantly look for the
signs that call us to change, like when the branches of the fig tree becomes tender and sprout leaves, you will know summer is near.

33rd Sunday of the YRB
1st Reading (DANIEL 12:1-3) In this reading Prophet Daniel predicts that soon the Archangel Michael, the guardian of the people of God, would come to the aid of God’s people. The reading also contains a clear belief in a resurrection to glory for those who remained faithful and the retribution after death.
2nd Reading (Hebrew 10:11-14,8) This reading insists on the superiority of Christ’s sacrifice over all the sacrifices of the Old Law.
Gospel Reading (Mark 13:24-32) This talks about the second coming of Christ, the eschatolo-gy, the time which is known only to God.
Reflection Theme: The end of the world/time (The Eschatology)
In the Gospel reading today (MK 13:32), Jesus talking about the end of the world/time said, “But of that day of hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Fa-ther” (MK 13:32).
As we are coming to the end of the liturgical year, let us consider Christ’s words about the last days. Jesus tells His disciples, the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will come falling from heaven and the powers in the heavens will be shaken (MK13:24-25). Here, Jesus is telling us that everything that exists will eventually come to an end. That reminds us about the famous quote by Santosh Kalwar, “every beginning has an end and every end has a new begin-ning, don’t worry, broken soul, life will one day come to an end”.
We are mortal beings and as surely as we had a beginning, a birth, we will most certainly have an end, a death. And our death is something we need to prepare for. That is the reason the read-ings today the first reading and the Gospel talk about the last days, at the end of time, the end of the world.
The eschatology; which means a study of the last things. It is derived from the Greek escha-ton-the things that are to take place at the end of the world. As we approach the conclusion of the liturgical year, our scripture readings want us to remember that our world as we know it will not continue on forever. Just as material universe had a beginning, a creation, so it will also have an end-ing. There will be a final day when everything we know will come to an end. On that great day Christ will come in glory and what we call general judgment will take place (MH 25:31-46). On that day, “all beings in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth, and to every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father” (PHILIPPIANS 2:10-11).
Jesus talking about the eschatology in today’s gospel wants us to be aware of what is ahead and then prepare for it. He does not want us to be afraid or be misled by claims or speculations that the end is near but must maintain a constant watchfulness.
As we have a beginning, certainly we also have an end, a death. We need to think about it and prepare for it. We go to funeral homes, funeral services even to cemeteries yet we do not like to think about death. We need to think for our death, we need to prepare for our death, we need to put our lives in order, we need to confess our sins, we need to get ourselves in shape from a spiritual point of view so that we are ready to meet our Savior when He comes. As it is written about the Parou-sia. “When he appears a second time, it will not be to deal with sin, but to reward with salvation those who are waiting for him” ( HEB 9:28).
Our death and the final judgement, while it is something we need to prepare for, is not something that we should be afraid of. Indeed, it should be something we should hope for. Something we should rejoice in. When we are eventually called by Jesus it will not be a face of a stranger but to embrace a loving Savior. If we die with word of repentance on our lips we are assured of a merciful judgement. Rejoicing in the fact that Jesus has brought salvation to the world we should be also happy when we are finally ushered into His presence. It is those who reject the salvation that Jesus brings us who ought to be afraid. They have a good reason to fear their death and the end of the world. But we who embrace God’s love and who want to walk in His ways, however imperfectly we may be doing it, have nothing to fear. As the Prophet Daniel says in the first reading today, “But the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of heaven and those who have instructed many in virtue shall be like stars forever” (DANIEL 12:3).
My bothers and sisters, if our lives are imbued in the faith, if we communicate the Gospel to others especially to our Children, then there is nothing for us to fear. That great day when the whole universe comes to its fulfillment will be a day of rejoicing, a day of salvation, a day of love and hope. Like the Psalmist, may we keep the Lord ever in our sight; since he is at our right hand, so that we shall stand firm to receive Him when He comes. Praise the Lord. Alleluia Amen.
Have a Blessed Sunday!
