NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey began their throwing programs Monday, playing catch together at Citi Field in their first steps toward returning to the mound for the New York Mets.

Whether either one gets back in time to make a difference this season, well, that remains to be seen.

On the mend from significant injuries, both right-handers said they felt good — but neither would put a timetable on his recovery. Harvey hasn’t been sidelined as long as Synder-gaard, but both are at least sev-eral weeks away from coming off the disabled list.

“We’ll try and get back as quick as we can,” Harvey said.

Syndergaard, an All-Star last season, has been out since May 1 with a torn lat muscle on his right side. Harvey, the oft-injured former ace who has faded the past two years, went down in mid-June with a stress injury to his right shoulder.

The two have combined for all of five wins (four by Harvey) and 18 starts this year, a major reason the disappointing Mets were 41-48 and 9 1/2 games out of a playoff spot going into Monday night’s series opener against St. Louis. With the July 31 trade deadline fast approaching, general manager Sandy Alderson must soon decide whether to deal away several veterans eligible for free agency this fall, including Jay Bruce, Lucas Duda, Curtis Granderson and Addison Reed.

“This is a big homestand,” manager Terry Collins said. “We’ve created where we are, and unfortunately it’s a stage where these games are very, very important to us.”

Collins chuckled when asked how much he’d like to fast for-ward to seeing both pitchers back in uniform.

“I’d like to really fast for-ward it, but I know there’s a lot of stages they’re going to have to get through before they get back on the mound here,” he said. “Look, I don’t have them. Certainly, it’s nice to see them out there. But I don’t know when I’ll get them back, or if I’ll get them back.”

“Right now it’s just a matter of patience and waiting and watching,” he added.

Syndergaard and Harvey threw to each other from about 65-70 feet away on flat ground. They’ll be on different rou-tines going forward, but both sounded optimistic and confi-dent about returning with some time left in the season.

“Day One. They looked free and easy,” Collins said. “That was a good sign.”

Syndergaard said his first couple of throws Monday felt weird, as if he was holding a pingpong ball, but after that he felt great. He said his body has never felt better and he’s been pain-free for about a month.

“I’m itching to get back out there. I’m ready to roll,” Syn-dergaard said. “From what it felt like today, I feel like I could get on the mound tomorrow, but I know it’s definitely not the smartest thing to do.”

In the wake of his injury, there was a lot of talk about whether Syndergaard’s heavy workout regimen and desire to build up muscle might have been the cause. But he said he doesn’t believe that was the case, and he wants to continue to try to throw even harder than he already does because he never wants to get “complacent.”

Harvey said he started to feel better soon after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection. He said his physical therapy has focused on strengthening the back of his right shoulder and scapula.

Harvey started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field but missed the following year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He pitched well in helping the Mets reach the 2015 World Series, but his ineffec-tive 2016 season was cut short by surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

He acknowledged perhaps he should have spoken up sooner when he was hurting earlier this year.

“It’s nice throwing today with no pain and that’s defi-nitely helping the mental side of things,” he said. “It was pretty uncomfortable for a while.”

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Beltran hasn’t used his glove in a game in more than two months.

So on Monday, the Houston Astros gathered around their teammate in center field and laid his mitt to rest, holding a mock funeral to send it off.

The silly ceremony was held at Minue Maid Park before bat-ting practice, prior to the AL West leaders hosting Seattle. The Astros all wore black shirts

to mark the occasion except for Brian McCann, who donned a black robe to officiate the service.

As McCann spoke, the players formed a semi-circle around him and knelt as the glove was placed in a shoe box and three faux tombstones that read “R.I.P.”

were placed around it. Bel-tran captured the whole thing on cellphone video.

The 40-year-old Beltran has

played 77 times this season, all but nine as a designated hitter. He hasn’t been in the field since May 16 in Miami.

Manager A.J. Hinch says the strong play of Marwin Gon-zalez is the main reason Beltran hasn’t played the outfield for so long. But Hinch isn’t ruling out another appearance.

“I’m not quite giving up on the glove, even though they’re burying it in the outfield,” Hinch said.

AP Sports WriterLonzo Ball seems to be just what the Lakers

needed.Yes, it’s only summer league, but Los Angeles

is mired in a playoff drought and in much need of some excitement. Enter the No. 2 pick in the draft.

Ball has created a buzz around the Los Angeles franchise — on and off the court.

He has averaged 16.3 points, 9.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in six summer league games in Las Vegas. The California native with Showtime-like flair has two triple-doubles and four double-digit assist games while leading the team to Monday night’s championship game. He will miss the final contest with a mild calf strain.

His absence Monday is almost throwaway line in the final chapter of Ball’s summer league story.

The 19-year-old made more headlines wearing different brands of sneakers each game.

“All press is good press, technically,” Finish Line content manager and creative strategist Brandon Edler said. “Just the fact that we con-tinue to talk about their every single move is amazing for their brand. ... Maybe his dad is just on a completely different level and he’s sitting there thinking, maybe this isn’t a great way to sell the shoe, but we’ve got everybody talking about us and every time somebody’s talking about us, that’s great for Big Baller Brand.”

After wearing his own ZO2 shoes in his first two games , which sell for $495, Ball wore the Nike Kobe AD and a James Harden signature Adidas in the following games. It was Under Armour’s turn Saturday when Ball played in a pair from Stephen Curry’s signature line. Jordan Brand got in the mix Sunday when Ball wore the Jordan 31 low.

Ball and his boisterous father, LaVar, just might be marketing geniuses with how they’ve kept his sneaker choice as headline news despite turning down lucrative offers from the major brands.

The sneaker rotation is clearly a deliberate plan and LaVar continues to tell people he’s asking for a $3 billion deal with one of the major companies.

Many have criticized the hype machine and multiple summer league players have said they wouldn’t wear the ZO2. But those same players

were supportive, even envious, of the concept of having their own independent fashion and sneaker line.

The Ball method is certainly unconventional. Rarely does someone promote their own brand by featuring products from other companies. But Lonzo said that’s part of the Big Baller Brand — having the independence to do what one wants.

“I don’t think it makes a much sense from a marketing perspective to speculate on the rea-sons,” emailed Dana Alden, department of mar-keting chair at the University of Hawaii’s Shidler College of Business. “From a brand equity building point of view, one would not expect the owner of a given brand to promote com-peting brands. Thus, I don’t see a clear marketing explanation.”

The circus atmosphere off the court somewhat overshadows what Ball has done on the court.

Ball has impressed with is play-making skills. It all makes the 6-foot-6 Ball seem like an

ideal for La La Land.He grew up in the suburb of Chino Hills and

the City of Angels is used to big point guards with next level passing ability. Fellow rookie Kyle Kuzma has averaged 20.5 points per game in large part due to Ball’s pinpoint passes.

Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson immediately laid out his expec-tations after drafting Ball — for the rookie’s number to hang from the Staples Center rafters. And the former UCLA star is making the archi-tect of Showtime and owner of five champion-ship rings look like a soothsayer.

“Passing translates, I don’t care what level you’re on,” Johnson told Lakers.com. “Lakers fans are thirsty. ... This team will be exciting and it starts with that point guard position. “

Lakers fans in Vegas are all on board for the Ball era.

“I like the idea the Balls are taking control of their own lives and trying to start their own brand and do things their way,” said Mark Appelbaum, 51, who sat courtside in a Kobe Bryant high school jersey. “It’s brought life and excitement back to the Lakers because Lonzo brings life and excitement with the way he plays.

“I don’t look at it as being brash I look at it as being confident. ... I think it’s funny that people are making a big deal about it, he’s just doing what he wants.”

No passing fancy: Lonzo Ball looks like ideal fit for Lakers

The depth and quality of the 2017 NBA draft had teams tanking at the end of the regular season in hopes of vaulting into the top three picks.

With the huge caveat being that it was only summer league action, those at the top of the draft made quite a first impression.

Summer league play was set to end on Monday night after Portland played the Lakers in the Las Vegas league championship game. Over leagues played in Orlando, Salt Lake City and Vegas, many of the top 10 picks gave their teams plenty to feel good about before heading into the league’s quiet period for the next two months.

No. 2 pick Lonzo Ball owned Vegas with a pair of triple-doubles to help the Los Angeles Lakers reach the title game. Top pick Markelle Fultz showed off his wide array of scoring tricks in Utah before sitting out much of Vegas with an ankle injury and No. 3 pick Jayson Tatum of Boston was drawing comparisons to Paul Pierce while dominating both in Utah and Nevada.

The competition these rookies will face will increase exponentially when training camps open in October. And there is a long list of summer league standouts — Nikoloz Tskitishvili, anyone? — who never amounted to anything in the NBA. But for struggling franchises like the Lakers, Sixers, Suns and Kings, seeing some real promise from their youngsters the first time they step on the court is encouraging.

“Every day, Magic and I say: ‘How are we pursuing excellence?’” Lakers GM Rob Pelinka told reporters in Vegas on Sunday, referring to new Lakers president Magic Johnson. “To win the Summer League (would be) a step in that direction.”

Whether the Lakers achieve that goal or not doesn’t mean the suffering of the last four years is over. Far from it.

The real test awaits in a couple of months. But for several franchises that are in the business of selling hope right now, business is good.

Here are some other takeaways from summer league action:

___PACKED HOUSE: Buoyed by Ball and the

Lakers, the Vegas Summer League enjoyed record attendance numbers, including multiple sell-outs of Thomas & Mack Center.

What started as a gathering of a few teams 13 years ago has turned into a full-fledged event under the guidance of coaching agent Warren LeGarie and Albert Hall. Sponsors are lining up to get in on the action, fans crowd the concourses looking for autographs of the next big things and established stars like LeBron James, Isaiah Thomas and John Wall sit courtside to watch the games.

ESPN and NBATV televise the games and over 500 media credentials were given out for the Las Vegas site alone.

The Vegas tournament has grown to include 24 teams and is also home to the league meetings, where owners gather to consider rules changes and other orders of business for the season ahead.

“I told Mayor Goodman that we should get a commission for the NFL and the NHL following in our footsteps,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said last week. “We were here when some leagues weren’t even taking advertising in Las Vegas, and we’re proud to be here. I feel our Summer League has become a fixture in Las Vegas, part of the permanent summer calendar.”

___OTHER STANDOUTS: Fultz, Tatum and

Ball weren’t the only youngsters to have strong showings in summer league.

Dennis Smith Jr., the No. 9 pick by Dallas, may have been the best player in Las Vegas, averaging 17.3 points and 4.2 assists per game for the Mavericks and Utah’s Donovan Mitchell averaged 28 points per game in just two games for the Jazz.

BOSTON (AP) — Blue Jays reliever Ryan Tepera couldn’t believe his eyes when he looked up and saw that he was the win-ning pitcher — his fifth career victory.

Starter Marcus Stroman was the best pitcher of the game, taking a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning and leaving without allowing an earned run. Dominic Leone relieved him, and was the pitcher of record when Toronto took the lead for good.

But Tepera was awarded the victory by official scorer Bob Ellis, who ruled that Leone didn’t deserve it after allowing a game-tying double on the only pitch he threw.

“I thought it was a mistake, but I’ll take it,” Tepera said, breaking into a laugh after the Blue Jays beat Boston 4-3 on Monday night. “I mean, wins don’t really matter as relievers, as long as we win as a team.”

Steve Pearce hit a solo homer, then added the go-ahead single in the eighth inning to lead Toronto a victory in the series opener. Stroman shut the Red Sox down for most of the game, but took a no-decision after they scored three unearned runs to tie it in the seventh.

After Andrew Benintendi doubled, Stroman failed to get his foot on the bag when cov-ering first on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s grounder. Christian Vazquez walked to load the bases. Brock

Holt’s sacrifice fly scored one run, and Mookie Betts singled in another to chase Stroman.

Leone came in, and Dustin Pedroia banged his first and only pitch off the Green Mon-ster. One run scored on the double, and Betts was thrown out at the plate after running through a stop sign from the third base coach.

Tepera (5-1) pitched a per-fect eighth. Baseball Rule 9.17 (c) states: “The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appear-ance, when at least one suc-ceeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead.”

“That’s the game of base-ball for ya,” Leone said. “From Marcus’ six innings — that’s why baseball is crazy. He deserves that win, no matter what. He pitched his butt off. It’s crazy with one pitch the game can switch like that, and the whole win-loss thing kind of gets tossed up for grabs, really.”

Toronto went back in front in the eighth when Pearce singled to score pinch-runner Ezequiel Carrera from third.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

Heath Hembree (1-3) took the loss.

MISSING SIGNSBetts took responsibility for

missing the sign from third base coach Brian Butterfield.

“I didn’t even see Butter put up the stop sign. That’s my fault for not looking up,” Betts said. “I was just thinking, ‘score.’”

FOR STARTERSStroman allowed three

unearned runs on five hits and three walks, striking out five. Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez, who was activated from the disabled list (right knee) for the game, allowed three runs on six hits and four walks, striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings.

“I thought with the layoff that Eddie had that was a strong five-plus innings of work here tonight,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

TRAINER’S ROOMHome plate umpire Chris

Segal remained in the game after getting hit in the head by Josh Donaldson’s bat in the first inning. Donaldson, the third batter in the game, swung at a pitch from Rodriguez and lost the handle on his bat. It flew behind him and hit Segal on the top of the head. Segal, who was wearing a mask but no helmet, went back to the ground and remained there until the training staff came running out. After a few minutes, Segal was smiling.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Chris Tillman and a trio of relievers provided the Baltimore Orioles something that’s been lacking for much of this season: a well-pitched game.

Seth Smith hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and the Orioles used a solid outing from by its struggling pitching staff to beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 Monday night.

Smith connected off Andrew Cashner (4-8) to make it 2-1, Baltimore’s first lead since the All-Star break following a three-game sweep by the Chi-cago Cubs. Baltimore yielded 27 runs in that series, including 21 by the starters over 11 1/3 innings.

In this one, Tillman allowed one run and two hits over six innings. It was the right-hand-er’s best performance since his season debut on May 7, when he blanked the White Sox over five innings in what remains his only win over 12 starts.

“It was great. He did fan-tastic,”” Smith said. “I think that’s what we expect from him, and what he expects from himself, so it was great to see him go out there and shut them down.” Richard Bleier (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh, Mychal Givens had a perfect eighth and Brad Brach com-pleted the three-hitter for his 16th save.

“There’s a lot of pieces, but we know that’s been a chal-lenge for us,” manager Buck Showalter said about the team’s pitching. “We know that’s got to get better.”

Manny Machado went 3 for 3 and Welington Castillo had two hits and scored a run for the Orioles, who were coming off a 2-8 stretch that dropped them into a tie with Toronto in the AL East cellar.

Adrian Beltre had two hits for the Rangers to move within 18 of 3,000 for his career.

Texas has scored only five runs in its last three games and now stands at 45-47. “There have been a couple of games here where the offense has been challenged. The opportunity to score has been challenged,” manager Jeff Banister said. “But these guys are still playing. We’re engaged. We’re getting excellent starting pitching.”

Cashner gave up three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

“I thought he was pretty

good,” catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. “Obviously, I thought he threw well enough to get the win. We just didn’t score runs for him.” Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when rookie Drew Robinson drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Lucroy , who was thrown out trying to make it a triple.

Baltimore pulled even in the sixth when Adam Jones walked, went to third on Machado’s hit-and-run single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schoop .

TRADE WINDSWith the Orioles fading

from contention, it’s possible that closer Zach Britton could be dealt before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. “I’m not in any rush to go anywhere, but it’s not my decision,” he said. “If it happens I’ll take it in stride. But I’ve been here since I was 18.”

NO SHORT-CHANGINGRobinson, who started in

left field for Texas, won’t have to worry about playing short-stop anytime soon. “We’re not going to put that on him,” Ban-ister said. “He been at second, he’s been at third, he’s been at left, we know he can go out in center.”

TRAINER’S ROOMRangers: RHP Keone Kela

(shvoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday and could return to game action as early as Thursday, though it’s unclear whether that would be with Texas or on a rehab assignment, Banister said . RHP A.J. Griffin (left intercostal strain) will pitch Wednesday at Triple-A Round Rock . LHP Jake Diekman (ulcerative colitis surgery) threw long toss on Monday and expects to have his first bullpen session of the season Thursday.

Orioles: RHP Stefan Crichton (right shoulder strain) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

UP NEXTRangers: RHP Tyson Ross

(2-1, 5.33 ERA) will start Tuesday night in the second game of the series. He’s 0-2 with a 17.10 ERA in seven career appearances against Baltimore.

Orioles: Dylan Bundy (8-8, 4.33 ERA) makes his third start since June 24 and first since July 11.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Eddie Rosario had two RBI doubles and Eduardo Escobar added the go-ahead, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning to help the Minnesota Twins to a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday night.

Brian Dozier had two hits and Adalberto Mejia gave up one run and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings for the Twins, who were tied 2-2 when Escobar delivered a base hit to left field off left-hander Caleb Smith (0-1). Rosario followed with his second double of the game, and Brandon Kintzler picked up his 26th save as light rain turned into a steady downpour at Target Field.

Yankees star slugger Aaron Judge went 0 for 3 with an intentional walk and is 1 for 21 since his electric performance in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Garrett Cooper had three hits, including two doubles, and fellow rookie Clint Frazier also had two doubles for New York.

The Yankees didn’t arrive in the Twin Cities until about 4 a.m. after a marathon weekend in Boston. The AL East rivals played 34 innings overs two days — a 16-inning game on Saturday that lasted nearly six hours followed by a double-header Sunday — that stretched the Yankees pitching staff to its

limits.Bryan Mitchell was brought

up from Triple-A for his first start of the season and gave up two runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings. But he dropped a soft toss from Cooper at first base in the third inning, a fielding error that allowed a run to score.

Taylor Rogers (5-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

JUDGE’S RULINGJudge has been in a slump

at the plate, but shined in other areas Monday night.

He hustled from first to third on a soft single to center field by Matt Holliday in the fourth inning and made one of the plays of the game in the third inning. The Twins had the bases loaded and nobody out for Miguel Sano, who hit a rocket to Judge in right field, and the former tight end looked like a quarterback with a one-hop throw home that got Dozier and saved a run.

Judge’s throw home was clocked at 97.7 mph by MLB’s Statcast.

DERBY REMATCHThe game featured a Home

Run Derby rematch between Judge and Sano, two of the best young sluggers in the game. Judge hit 47 homers in three rounds of the derby in Miami,

beating Sano in the final round. But the long-ball contest did

not continue on Monday night. Sano went 1 for 3 with a single and a walk.

Twins: RHP Bartolo Colon will make his first start for the Twins since being signed on July 7. The 44-year-old Colon went 2-8 with an 8.14 ERA for the Braves this season. He made one start for Triple-A Roch-ester before being called up for the fifth spot in the rotation, a revolving door for the Twins this season.

Kirk Cousins will be the first quarterback in NFL history to play consecutive seasons on the franchise tag.

Cousins and the Wash-ington Redskins didn’t sign a long-term deal by the deadline Monday. He will make $23.94 million on the franchise tag in 2017 after earning $19.95 mil-lion last year.

Team president Bruce Allen said in a prepared statement that the Redskins’ goal was to sign Cousins to a long-term contract and offered him $53 million guaranteed or $72 million in the event of injury. That would have been the second-most

fully guaranteed money given to a QB behind Aaron Rodgers’ $54 million.

“Despite our repeated attempts, we have not received any offer from Kirk’s agent this year,” Allen said. “Kirk has made it clear that he prefers to play on a year-to-year basis. While we would have liked to work out a long-term contract before this season, we accept his decision.”

Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, declined an inter-view request made before Allen issued his statement.

tAllen said the team’s offer was made May 2 and that he met with Cousins face to face over the weekend.

The 28-year-old Michigan State product is going into his third full season as Wash-ington’s starter. Cousins set franchise records with 4,166 and 4,917 yards the past two seasons, but has yet to win a playoff game.

Oakland’s Derek Carr signed a deal last month that guaran-tees him $40 million. Carr has also not won a playoff game, but has played only three pro seasons, Cousins will head into his sixth NFL campaign and was a backup to Robert Griffin III to start his career.

In 46 games, including 41 starts, Cousins has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 12,113 yards, 72 touchdowns and 42 interceptions.

“I think Kirk has proved that he’s in the top 15 quarterbacks,” recently promoted senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said last month.

“Wherever you want to put him it all depends on who’s looking at him in this league for what he’s done in this league. I know a lot of people say he’s got to win this one, he’s got to win that one, but I think Kirk has proved that he can play in this league.”

Cousins and executives called negotiations positive, and they may go through this again next spring. If Washington uses the franchise tag again for 2018, Cousins would get a 44 percent raise to $34.47 million, or they could use the transition tag on him at a cost of $28.78 million.

The transition tag would allow the Redskins to match any offer but would not give them any compensation if he left. Cousins has no shortage of admirers around the league, most notably former Wash-ington offensive coordinators Kyle Shanahan, now head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, and Sean McVay, now coach of the Los Angeles Rams.

Alo o Samoa, a local canoe club, conducted a 4-day (one hour per day) course on outriggers as part of the Boys Scout of American Samoa’s summer camp this year; and last Friday at Coconut Point- Pala Lagoon, the course work ended with a race.

About 35 boys participated and they named their teams: Mixed Boys, Z - Rider, Fast and Furious, Old Squad, Maui Team, Funk and Jelly Fish.

Paddler teams were mixed, and the boys did not remain in their troops — to make the teams more equal. According to Alo o Samoa, they were happy to do the outreach. The club is also grateful that it found sponsors for the new boats/ canoes it received this year, as it has allowed them to stage some of the canoes at the Pala Lagoon permanently — allowing Alo o Samoa to do more of this kind of outreach. Alo o Samoa Club sponsors were: NPI, Steinlager and the American Samoa Visitors Bureau.

NEWLYWED’S WORLD CAVES IN WHEN THE TRUTH COMES OUTDEAR ABBY: I dated the perfect man for two years. When he asked me to marry him, I had to

say yes. He was kind, gentle, attentive, easygoing, full of dreams, great sense of humor, an excel-lent provider and sexually the best. Three months after our perfect wedding, it all began to unravel. I learned he is bipolar with manic episodes. He has been married three times before me and always lost interest in sex. He says he may be attracted to men, then tells me he’s not sure. He also isn’t as good handling his financial affairs as he led me to believe. I’m 58, and he’s 59. How could I not have had a clue about any of this? I sold my house to move into the parsonage with him. After repeatedly being lied to, misinformed or left out of the loop all together, I am now couch-surfing, mainly at my ex-husband’s house. I feel tired and broken -- no income, no home, no respect and no hope of him getting it together. I would appreciate any advice or counsel. All I have figured out is to start over and remain single as he is my third husband. -- THIRD TIME AROUND

DEAR T.T.A.: You will feel less tired and broken after you have consulted a lawyer about helping you get out of this fraudulent marriage. And while you’re at it, you and your lawyer should bring this to the attention of the church council or whoever holds the lease on that parsonage. I am sure they will be very interested in what you have to say about the leader of their flock.

** ** **DEAR ABBY: When I started dating my husband, “Ralph,” 22 years ago, I made it very clear that I

would NEVER move to his hometown, which is six hours away. Even though it may seem selfish, my wish was to be near my family. Our relationship progressed anyway. We’ve been married for 15 years, live in my hometown, and have three little boys. Ralph is 42, homesick and wants us to move back home now to be around his parents because he’s lived around my parents for 15 years. I told him my intentions were made crystal clear before we got married and I wasn’t moving. His response was, “So you were worth moving for, but I’m not?”There are other reasons for my not wanting to move there, but the bottom line is that I wish he had been true to himself before deciding to marry me. I think it’s a bit late to be playing this game. I’d like your thoughts, and please give it to me straight. -- STAYING PUT

DEAR STAYING: OK, here they are. I think your husband has a valid point. Marriage is supposed to be about compromise, and for the last 15 years he has lived in your community.

I wish you had shared what your other reasons for being against moving are, because they might have influenced my opinion. But from where I sit, I think you owe it to Ralph to give it a try. Perhaps you and your family could rent out the home you’re living in and rent a place in his hometown for a year. That way, if you can’t adjust, you would be able to move back near your own family, which appears to be your first priority.

Happy Birthday: Think outside the box and you’ll figure out a way to get things done in a timely and fashionable manner. The changes that others make should be looked at carefully before you offer help or get involved. Separate your emotions from what’s in your best interest. Put your energy into your goals, not someone else’s. Your numbers are 8, 14, 20, 24, 32, 44, 47.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Call on your courage, strength and intuition to avoid getting involved in situations that could be detrimental to your reputation, status or partnerships. Have a purposeful plan in place if you want to make a move✸✸✸

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Sensitivity can be a good thing if you use it to express the way you feel and offer beneficial suggestions and solutions. Outbursts will not be acceptable, nor will they help solve a problem. Mindful action gets positive results. ✸✸✸

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Do your best to keep secrets. Don’t indulge in something unless you have all the information you require to do things properly. Personal gains can be made if you focus on self-improvement and avoid emotional purchases✸✸✸

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Do what you do best and make sure you take care of your own interests first. It’s OK to help others, but not if it means a personal loss or expense. Your suggestions should be ample to keep others happy✸✸✸✸

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Refuse to let what someone else says or does hinder your progress. It’s up to you to take care of business first. A well-thought-out plan will help you make the changes neces-sary to improve your situation✸✸

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Keep your emotions in check when dealing with institutions or while traveling outside your home country. Put in extra effort when helping others and your hard work will give your reputation a boost. Networking is encouraged. ✸✸✸✸✸

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Look over personal and contractual paperwork. It’s best to find out ahead of time if there are any hidden costs or exceptions that you may have overlooked. Troubles at home and at work will result in a sudden change. ✸✸✸

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Steer emotional energy toward productive ends. Short trips to visit someone or learn something new will encourage you to take a chance and trust in your abilities. Don’t follow the crowd or make a hasty decision.✸✸✸

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A change of location or to the way you do things is encouraged. You’ll learn easily and be able to apply the information you pick up in order to bring about positive lifestyle changes. Don’t be disillusioned by a smooth talker. ✸✸✸

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don’t let impulses take over. Emotional decisions and spending money are best monitored carefully. Don’t make a promise without finding out exactly what is expected of you. Overpaying for something is likely if you don’t do your research. ✸✸✸✸✸

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Partnerships will undergo some tension if you let little things get to you. Try to work with, not against, whatever situation you face. Change can be good if you are willing to iron out any trouble spots.✸✸

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You’ll end up in a vulnerable position if you are too open. Listen to what’s being said and look for signals that will reveal whether you should participate in what’s being offered. Play it safe and avoid sorrow. ✸✸✸✸

Long, long ago, in a time when the world was desolate and empty, filled with vipers and beasts, there lived a giant known as Kua Fu. Kua Fu lived on a mountain called Heaven Pillar in the northern wilderness. He was so enormous that, with a single stride, he could cross hundreds of miles.

Kua Fu led a group of mighty giants. Those who did not know Kua Fu thought he must be fierce. After all, from his ears he wore ferocious snakes as decoration.

And he strode through the land without fear.

But in truth, Kua Fu was gentle and kind. He could be impatient, and some-times he was vain. He wished everyone to know of his importance. But he was generous, and he thought not only of himself, but of others, too.

One year, the weather was scorching hot. The plants shriveled. The rivers ran dry. The people sweated and cursed and fainted from the heat.

And Kua Fu’s heart ached for their misery. He decided he must do some-thing to help.

He thought for a long time about what he would do, and then one day as he was gazing up at the bright sun, he suddenly knew.

He would challenge the sun to a race. After all, he was faster than anyone on Earth. Surely he could catch the sun and teach it a lesson.

He would tame the sun. He would catch it and tell it to serve everyone. He would teach the sun to be kind to the plants and the rivers and the people.

That night, Kua Fu pulled a tree out of the Earth -- a tree so tall it could reach heaven, and he stood watching and waiting for the sun to appear.

The moment he saw the first light rise in the East, Kua Fu took the tree and began to run. With each step, he raised a gust of wind and an enormous cloud of dust drifted in his wake. The other giants watched as he disappeared from Heaven Pillar, and they saw all the mountains quake as their leader ran. The gods, too, watched closely. No one knew who would win this competition.

“Kua Fu may be as fast as the sun,” the gods whispered, and the giants agreed.

The sun saw Kua Fu was giving chase, but the sun seemed not to care. As it had each day, the sun crossed the sky without a care in the world, and Kua Fu picked up speed. He grew tired. He was parched with thirst. But he was determined. And the closer Kua Fu came, the more excited he got, and that excitement overcame his exhaustion.

Hours passed, and because Kua Fu’s shoes were so full of dirt, he

stopped a moment to take them off and empty them. The dust that came from his shoes became a hill, and up that hill he ran.

That night, as the sun disappeared in the Western sky, Kua Fu rested. He used three stones to support the stove on which he cooked his supper, and when the first light came again, he left those stones behind and began to run, and those stones grew into tall mountains.

Nine days had passed. Each day, Kua Fu woke and stretched his legs, and the moment he saw the first light, he began to run.

He ran like the wind -- faster than the wind, many say. He crossed thou-sands of miles, and he rested only when the sun rested.

But on the ninth day, as he was run-ning, he became so parched with thirst that he knew he had to drink. He had

never felt this thirsty; his body seemed to be drying up, turning to stone.

He searched for the nearest stream, and he bent down and began to drink. He drank that stream dry, but even that was not enough.

“I must reach the river,” he said, and he ran to the mighty Yellow River. Again, he bent down and began to drink. He drank, and he drank, and even the whole of the Yellow River did not quench his thirst. He drank that river dry.

He moved on, drinking every stream and lake he passed, and still nothing quenched his thirst.

He drained the Wei River too, and soon he understood.

The only thing that would quench his thirst was the sweet, cold water of the North Sea, and so he moved to the North.

He could no longer run. His legs

were too weak. He was too tired. Still, he moved on. At long last, he

saw the sun nearly within reach. He raised his arms, but he had no strength left, and in despair, he cast the tree he’d been carrying toward the sun, and then he collapsed.

As he fell, the deafening sound rolled across the mountains and val-leys, and everyone knew he had failed.

The weight of his fall shook heaven and Earth. As always, the sun set that night.

The next morning, as the sun rose, the gods saw that Kua Fu’s body had transformed into a mountain range. The tree he had carried grew into a peach tree grove.

Today that forest is called Donglin Forest, and it is beautiful, lush and green, with peaches so sweet and moist that they might relieve the thirst of anyone who chases the sun.
