Response to Reimplimenting the Federal Death Penalty: Speaking for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Frank J. Dewane, chair of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, issued a statement in reaction to Mr. Barr’s decision: “In 2015 Pope Francis, echoing the views of his predecessors, called for ‘the global abolition of the death penalty.’ He went on to state that, ‘[A] just and necessary punishment must never exclude the dimension of hope and the goal of rehabilitation.’ The Catholic Bishops of the United States have echoed this call for many years, including their 2005 statement, “A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death.” In light of these long held and strongly maintained positions, I am deeply concerned by the announcement by the United States Justice Department that it will once again turn, after many years, to the death penalty as a form of punishment, and urge instead that these Federal officials be moved by God’s love, which is stronger than death, and abandon the announced plans for executions.”

Social Ministry Project - Migrant Ministry Our area is rich in agricultural heritage, and we are blessed to have several parishioners who continue operating family farms, bringing local food to our tables. One of these farms owned by a parishioner is Martin Farms, and they will be bringing about 95 men to the area at the end of August. In agriculture, the hours are long and the work is hard, but these workers return year after year, thankful for the opportunity to earn a better life for their families in Mexico. Mothers, fathers, wives and children are left behind, and often do not feel they are a part of the workers new life in this area. All the migrants are on the work visa program - there are no illegal migrants. As a welcoming gesture, your Social Ministry Committee would like to give a welcoming bag of items to these incoming migrants upon their arrival. They come with nothing, and we have identified their needs with the help of the Martins. We would like parishioners to supply granola bars, packaged adult tooth brushes and tooth paste, soap and medium size shampoo - about 12 oz. only, (not motel size). Boxes will be set up at the church entrances for your donations through the weekend of August 18th.
Attention Prayer Chain Members and Perspective Members!!! We will be having a meeting for old and NEW prayer chain volunteers at the Martha House on Wednesday, August 21st at 1:30pm in the PC Chapel. If you are already a member of the Prayer Chain Ministry or would like to BECOME a new member , please plan to come to this meeting. We will be making a new phone list of contacts at this time. If you cannot come to the meeting but wish to remain a member or to become a new member, please call the parish office at 352-5481 and let us know your wishes and contact information. We will mail a phone list to you. There is a new opportunity for participation in this group. If you would prefer to offer prayers for people's requests without having to call anyone, we will have a section of people who will be notified of the prayer needs and not asked to pass the message along. If this is what you prefer, simply make your wishes known and we will see that you are made a part of this group. We encourage anyone who has been looking for a way to help others in their times of need to give prayerful consideration to this wonderful ministry. We are there for anyone who needs our prayers for any reason. Truly, in this way, we can show that we are Christians by our love and service in His holy name. You can leave your prayer request any time by calling 352-5481, ext. 213. You do not have to leave your name. ALL requests are confidential.
