LABOR IN THE WORLD SOCIAL STRUCTURE edited by IMMANUEL WALLERSTEIN

A Publication of the Fernand Braudel Center

This volume assembles leading American and Russian scholars to discuss the role of workers and worker movements in both core and peripheral nations. A region-by-region survey illuminates the similar- ities and differences in how Russians and Americans perceive such issues as the relationship between nationalism and workers' move- ments, and the impact of increasingly skilled workers doing unskilled labor in Western nations. This second issue, viewed from opposing vantage points by the Russians and Americans, provides the frame- work for intriguing debate. Original essays also address such specific topics as the relationship between war and union membership, the role of the state in trade union growth, and the formation of a working class and its links to revolutionary movements, such as the Japanese "rice riots" of 1918. More than just a breakthrough in East/West scholarly interchange, this volume represents the first attempt to examine empirically the abstract concepts of labor that scholars have bandied about for decades. Those concerned with labor move- ments, the role of the worker in society, and other industrial relations issues will find this provocative and enlightening reading. CONTENTS: Preface I. WALLERSTEIN / Introduction D. MONTGOMERY // 1. Capitalism and the World Working Class: Some Premises and Some Issues for Research and Analysis I. WALLERSTEIN / 2.
