WAR/PEACE REPORT

Tram An

independent monthly magazine presenting

[act and i~

opinion on progress toward a world

of law and

order. Some

of the questions'~ that WAR/PEACE

REPORT

has

recently treated

in depth include: Is the

revolution

in

South

Vietnam

being

nm by Vietnamese--or by

Hanoi or Peking or

Moscow? What t are the

leaders

of the Viet

tong really like,

and

what

are their principles?

What

kind of

steps can be taken next toward disarmament? What

are

Communist Chinese nuclear

intentions? How

can

the U.N.

be better

equipped to

keep

the peace? What

Cuban policy makes

the

most sense

for the U.S.?

What

do the

Russians mean

by 'coexistence'?

On many

of

these

questions

a direct exchange

of views

between spokesmen

of

East and West is developing

in the

pages

of WAR/PEACE

REPORT. Recent contributors

to WAR/PEACE PiEPORT

Tx-m Jotm~An OF CONFLICt Pff. sontrnoN

is de- signed to stimulate

and

communicate systematic research

and

thinking on international processes, including

the

total international system, the

interactions

among governments

and

among nationals

of

different states,

and the

processes by which nations make

and

execute their foreign

policies.

It is

our

hope that theoretical

and

empirical efforts

in this

area

will

help in minimizing

the

use

of

violence in resolving

inter-

national conflicts. The editors believe that concepts, data, and methods

from all of the

social

and

behavioral sciences

are

needed

for the

understanding

of

problems

in

this field

and for the

development

of

a

systematic

body

of

knowledge. Moreover, we believe that relevant insights

can

be derived from analyses

of

interaction and conflict, not only directly at the international level, but also at other levels

of

social

organization.

We

there-

fore welcome submission

of

manuscripts rele- vant to conflict and its resolution, regardless

of

their disciplinary

orientation,

their level

of

analysis, their theoretical approach,

or the

type

of

research methods used. The

Jotm~XL pub-

lishes a wide variety

of articlesminc!uding

re- ports

of

empirical research

(basic

or

applied),

theoretical analyses, critical reviews, as

well

as

speculative

or programmatic papers with a systematic focus. Form and Style

for

Submission

of

Manuscripts

In

order to standardize

and

facilitate han- dling

of

manuscripts, authors are asked to observe

the

following procedures

in submit-

ting materials to

THE JOtreNAL

OF

CoN~x.xc'r

RESOLUTION. Manuscripts must

be typed

with a dark,

black

ribbon (electric typewriter preferred),

dearly mimeographed, or multilithed.

Do

not

use ditto. A minimum

of

corrections may

be

made in dark

ink,

but

the

typesetter

shonld not be

expected to piece

the

manuscript together. Submit three copies

of the

manuscript. Double

space evendthing,

including footnotes

and

references. Citations Use author's

name and

publication date in parentheses

in

referring

to the

"References"

sec- tion

at

the

end

of the

article. For example,

"The model of

cognitive structure

to be

described is

similar at

various points

to other

models

(Jones,

1958; Huntington, 1958)."

If

only certain pages within

the

reference are being cited,

in- dieate

these within

the

parentheses. For

in-

stance, "Huntington also takes note

of

alliance formation as an alternative

to the

arms race

(Huntington,

1958, pp.

64-5)."

Do

not

cite references

by

means

of footnotes;

footnotes

and

citations should be separated. Footnotes Footnotes should be numbered consecutively throughout the article. Do

not

use

printers'

symbols. The footnotes should be placed

on

the page of

the

manuscript where reference to them appears. References

Place

the "Reference" section

'nnmediately

after

the

text. References should be

alphabetized

and submitted in one of

the

following forms:

DEtrrscH, Kam~

et

al. Political

munity and the North Atlantic Area. Prince- ton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1957.

pages

should be included

in

a sepa- rate section at

of the

fol-

lowing

the
