SOMAL, OR SOMALT, is a name that has onily been in use to de- scribe the dominant race in the Horn of Africa since the begin- ning of this cenitury. Sir R. Burton (1856) says that the Somalis call their country Barr-al-Ajamn. The old maps name the coun- try Asha anid Hawiya. The derivation of the word Somal has puzzled people. Major Abud, whose authority must carry great weighit, leans to that whiich has been suggested by the language itself. He says: " The Somal are a hospitable race, anid, as mnilk is their staple foodl supply, the first words a stranger would hear in visiting, their kraals would be 'So-mal,' i. e., 'Go anid bring milk.' I have heard it suggested that the other word for milk, 'liss,' may account for the terminationi 'lis' in 'Somalis.'" As a mnatter of fact, " So-liss "is niot used in a command to go anid brin g milk, or to go and milk a camel for a visitor, but only in ordinary conversation, and " Somal "is the usual commnand in bidding any onie to go and bring, milk for the refreshmenit of a

stranger. In any case, there is nothing indicative of the origin of their language or race in the name Somiali or Somal. -Sir R. Burtoni has a note on the name Somal, where he alludes to a traveler who asserted that Somali was derived from the Abys- siniiani "Soumahe " (heathen).- Pease in Scott-ish Geographical Joutrnal, Febr-uary, 1898, page 68.
