Dissent in Early

China Ju-lin wai-sbib and

Ch'ing Social Criticism

A study of intellectual ferment - dissent, change, and social criticism - in

eighteenth-century China, as seen through the life of Wu Ching-tzu, author of China's greatest pre-twentieth-century satirical novel, Ju-lin wai-shih. Ropp illuminates the eighteenth century as an era of both decline and re- newal and one whose social criticisms foreshadowed similar dissent which culminated in reformist and revolutionary movements in the twentieth century.

World Development Report 1980 THE WORLD BANK

World Development Report, 1980, with its Statistical Annex, World Development Indicators, is the third in an annual series designed to present to the public a continuing assessment of world development issues at the national and international levels. This year's Report looks at two major challenges facing developing countries at the start of the decade. First, they must try to continue the economic and social progress of the past thirty years under international conditions that look less helpful than a decade or even a year ago. Second, they must struggle to relieve the plight of those 800 million people living in absolute poverty who have benefited too little from past progress. The Report examines important aspects of the difficulties and the prospects in both areas,, looking as far ahead as 2000, but paying particular attention to the next five to ten years.

A Himalayan Tribe From Cattle to Cash Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf The development of the Apa Tanis stands in sharp contrast to the decline of many other Indian tribes. From an archaic economy and total illiteracy they have moved rapidly into the modern world. The author observed this surprising process in the course of periodic visits to the Apa Tanis between 1944 and 1978, and he describes the unique advancement with insight and sympathy. $15.00, illustrated

Sacred Cows, Sacred Places Origins and Survivals of Animal Homes in India Deryck 0. Peasant China in Transition The Dynamics of Development toward Socialism, 1949-1956 Vivienne Shue Shue demonstrates that China's swift agricultural collectivization can be understood only in the context of several rural economic policies that preceded it. Her analysis establishes a new benchmark for assessing agrarian reform movements in third-world countries, the Soviet and other socialist collectivization drives, as well as China's own subsequent political development. $25.75, illustrated

Poetry and Speculation of the Rg Veda Willard Johnson For centuries translators of the Rg Veda have been perplexed by passages that seem hopelessly obscure, their associations buried in the remote past. Using the methodology of recent literary criticism, Johnson focuses on the need to understand these passages in terms of their original context-the Rg Vedic speculative symposium-and their basic form-riddle and response. $18.50

The Chinese and the Japanese Essays in Political and Cultural Interactions Edited by AKIRA IRIYE Together these essays tell the story of how two highly self- conscious cultures, each with long and proud traditions of their own, have defined themselves both with respect to one another and under the influence of the West. Focusing on the period between 1800 and 1945, the essays approach the modern history of Chinese-Japanese relations in terms of the contact between the countries' ideas, institutions, and govern- ments. A Conference Volume of the Social Science Research Council. Cloth, $25.00. Limited Paperback Edition, $9.95

Education and Equality in Japan WILLIAM KENNETH CUMMINGS In this study of education in postwar Japan, William Cummings shows how the Japanese have succeeded where the Americans have failed in promoting egalitarian social change through the school systems. On the basis of extensive primary research and direct personal observation in the class- room, the author examines how the curriculum, pedagogy, and teacher-pupil relationship in Japanese schools contribute to leveling the social structures the youths enter once they leave school. REISCHAUER' S JAPAN REVISITED JAPAN: The Story of a Nation N EW Third Edition Edwin 0. Reischauer, Harvard University

In this new edition, almost completely rewritten from earlier versions, Edwin 0. Reischauer-former U.S. Am- bassador to Japan and now one of this country's leading authorities on Japan-has brought up to date his re- nowned study of Japanese history, culture, and politics.

The author delineates the evolution of Japanese civiliza- tion as a whole: the language; religion; samurai warrior caste; emperial rule to military dictatorship; World War II and postwar American occupation; and the recovery of the Japanese economy. Reischauer analyzes the current challenges faced by the Japanese as they reassess their basic values, national goals, economic policies, and inter- national alignments-concluding with a new chapter that highlights Japan's role as a major industrial power.

JAPAN: The Story of a Nation remains the concise interpretive history of Japan.

STUDIES ON KOREA A Scholar's Guide edited by Han-Kyo Kim * $25.00 Though a large volume of literature on Korea has accumulated, the student has been hampered by the absence of an up-to-date, authori- tative guide to this material. Hence the present volume at the present time. The primary aim of the guide is to present basic bibliographic information, especially on publications in English, in all the custom- ary academic disciplines. Of special interest are separate chapters on North Korea and on Russian language materials. Han-Kyo Kim, professor of political science at the University of Cincinnati, has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and publication activi- ties in Korean studies for some twenty years.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN MODERN JAVA Gamelan in a Changing Society Judith Becker * $30.00 The author contends that socio-political changes in Javanese society since the 1940s are reflected in changes in the structure of gamelan music, which is one of the traditional musics of Java. Becker exam- ines the works of contemporary composers Ki Wasitodipuro and Ki Nartosabdho to illustrate modern innovations in gamelan composi- tion and the attitudes of composers to their music, as they attempt to compromise between the ethos and structure of traditional gam- elan music and the changing tastes and attitudes of the modern Indonesian nation. Judith Becker, associate professor of musicol- celempung ogy at the University of Michigan, spent more than two years of fieldwork in Java on gamelan music.
