Editorial Rules Contributors to the Canadian Journal of African Studies (CAAS) should submit four copies of their manuscript ranging in length from 6 000 to 10 000 words (25 to 40 double-spaced typed pages), including text, quotations, endnotes, and bibli-

ography). Authors should indicate their full name, their academic or professional status, and the address of the institution with which they are affiliated. Authors should also make sure to include all forwarding addresses and to notify the Editors if their addresses change. They should also write an abstract of less than 125 words for a translation into French.

The Chicago Manual of Style, 13th edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1982), is the copy editing reference book for CJAS. References must be indi- cated parenthetically within the text, using the author-date system. In paren- theses, references should include the author's surname, the date of publication of the source, and the pages cited) if appropriate. At the end of the article, a bibliog- raphy arranged alphabetically by author's surname must provide full information on all references. Documentation or information too extensive to be presented by the author-date format should be presented by numbered endnotes. Such refer- ences should be numbered consecutively within the text and presented in double-

spaced format at the end of the text, before the bibliography. A style sheet is available from the CJAS editorial office and will be sent automatically to all authors whose articles are to be published. Authors must comply with style sheet guidelines and all reasonable decisions related to copy editing.

Graphs, maps, and diagrams should be prepared in a format ready for photo- reproduction. Tables and other graphic material should follow the format used in various articles published in CJAS from Volume 20 (1986) onward. When initially submitting a paper, authors should send only photocopies and retain the original copy. If the article is accepted, the CJAS will request the originals of all tables, graphs, maps, and diagrams. Authors should always retain a copy for their own record. Manuscripts will not be returned.

A manuscript sent to CJAS must not be submitted to another publication at the same time. CJAS reserves the exclusive right to decide on publication for six months from the date of receipt. CJAS will not accept more than one article at a time for consideration for publication from the same author in any volume year and cannot publish an author more than once a year other than in hook reviews. CJAS does not publish (1) translations of articles published elsewhere, either from English to French or from French to English, or (2) articles which are published in edited collections or as book chapters.

An author must assign full control of copyright to the publisher, the Cana- dian Association of African Studies (CAAS), before an article can be published in CJAS. CAAS and CJAS do not accept responsibility for statements of facts or opinion or for errors or omissions made by the author.
