The Valparaiso University Chorale is among the top Lutheran collegiate choirs in the United States, upholding the highest standard of choral art through performance of the greatest choral literature of all eras. Dedicated to performing works that celebrate the University’s Lutheran heritage, the choir is also noted for the performance of significant contemporary works in their original languages and for the performance of music expressing multicultural perspectives. The Chorale has served three residencies at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig—the only collegiate American choir to enjoy such a strong relationship with the church of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Chorale will return in June 2012 for a fourth residency, marking the 800th anniversary of the St. Thomas Church and its choir, the Thomanerchor.

This world renowned choir hardly needs an introduction. Do not miss out on the opportunity to hear them live in the beautiful acoustics of the basilica.

Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas. Together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Wiener Sängerknaben maintain the tradition of the imperial musicians: as Hofmusikkapelle they provide the music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna’s Imperial Chapel, as they have done since 1498. The choir is a private, not-for-profit organization. The eight members of the choir’s governing body oversee its development and guarantee its future. The current president is Walter Nettig. Gerald Wirth became the choir’s artistic director in 2001.
