A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I hope on the Fourth of July weekend, the 245

th Anniversary of the founding of our

Nation, that you had the opportunity to celebrate with relatives and friends. During my homily on July 4

th, I credited my grandparents, immigrants from Italy, with instilling in me

a great love for our country. They came from several parts of Italy (Bari, Naples and Sicily) in search of the American dream as life in Italy was difficult, filled with so many hardships and challenges. So, you can imagine my delight when Pope Francis announced the establishment of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. A publication from the Diocese of Rockville Centre explains: “Grandparents pass on history and traditions within a family and the culture at large, but the treasures of age (e.g. wisdom, memory, unbounded sacrifice) extend to all our elders—and should not be forgotten. Indeed, in an expanding cultural mindset that disparages advanced age for its imperfect physicality and actively extinguishes frailty through various forms of euthanasia, we must resist this hopeless perspective, and instead, respond with a fearless validation of the invaluable gifts that come with advanced age and even with infirmity. The document goes on by stating, “. . .Pope Francis has formally established World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to be celebrated annually throughout the Church on the fourth Sunday in July—close to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne who, as the grandparents of Jesus, are the paragons for all grandparents. The purpose of this celebration is to remind us that advanced age is a blessing—a gift that should be both cherished and freely shared, most especially in passing on the Faith.” Therefore, the first annual celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will take place on the weekend of July 24

th & 25

th. We are presently finalizing plans on

how we will observe and celebrate this special day here at St. James, honoring these very special people in our lives. Coming on the Weekend of September 11

th & 12

th: September 11, 2021, marks the

20th Anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We are planning the

celebration of a “Blue Mass” to honor all firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians and other first responders who serve our local community. We will also express our gratitude to the many parishioners who serve us and other communities through these selfless positions of service. More details will follow in next weekend’s bulletin. Are you aware of any of our “parishioners” who perished at the World Trade Center on that day or on a future date as a result of an illness linked to September 11

th? Please let

me know.

Brief info about Fr. Mariusz Gorazd I was born in 1980 in Krakow. It is a beautiful city full of monuments with nearly a thousand years of history, located in the southern part of Poland. I grew up in a family of four: my parents, my sister and me. After graduating from high school, I joined the Archbishop's Seminary in Krakow. There, after completing my master's studies and defending my master's thesis, in 2006 I was ordained a priest. For 9 years of pastoral ministry in Poland, I worked in 4 parishes, both in urban and rural areas. The last 3.5 years before my departure to the USA, I worked as an associate pastor at the Shrine of St. John Paul II in Krakow, a place visited by crowds of pilgrims from all over the world. And I think that this experience accelerated my decision to go to the USA. Upon arriving at the Diocese of Rockville Centre in October 2015, I was assigned to serve as associate pastor at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Parish in Cutchogue. Then in June 2019, I was appointed administrator of St. Ladislaus Parish in Hempstead, where I have served for the past two years. Since June this year, I have enjoyed serving as associate pastor at St. James. In my free time I like to read, listen to music (I like classical music, movie soundtracks), play guitar and ethnic drums. I am also interested in sports, more as a spectator than an active athlete - mainly soccer, volleyball, tennis and ski jumping. I also like hiking in the mountains and skiing in winter. I am very grateful to the parishioners of St. James for a very warm and kind welcome to the parish. I hope that we will pray and work together and make a pilgrimage together to the place that Jesus has prepared for us.

What’s happening in

Did you Know?

The Calling of Samuel

Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Again the Lord called, Samuel!” And Samuel got up

and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been

revealed to him. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!”

And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am;

you called me.” Then Eli real-ized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord,

for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay

down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling

as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then

Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Shake the Dust from your feet

The theme of the Gospel readings over the last weeks

have made me pause and think. This week and last

Jesus is telling us that not everyone listens and that

we are not to stop speaking but maybe, just move on.

I know from past experiences that some people just

don’t want to hear you. No matter what you say

they are closed to anything about a certain topic.

Just think about the last election, no wait, don’t.. I

can’t handle that anymore, everyone gets angry.

Well, I see Jesus’ point.

Have you thought about what you say and how

often you say it? No really. As my granddad would

say “you’re beating a dead horse” it was usually

directed at me as I spoke about whatever book series I

was currently reading (boy, could I talk about

books) while he was watching the Mets. He liked

baseball, (its ok, but not taking place in a faraway

land with dragons) and he would talk about RBI’s

and the STATS on each player, I could not have

cared less about it. What we did do was listen to each

other, well most of the time, because we loved each

other. When we had enough we just sat, me reading

and him watching, together.

Compromise, move on if you have to, but be open

first to the message.

Youth Ministers [email protected]

All Students Grades 7 – 12 welcome!

As we are now in the middle of the summer, the heat continues to rise and people are enjoying time outside as we begin to transition into a new normal here at St. James, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and Long Island as a whole. We are excited for the new opportunities that will be coming as we begin to open up. Youth Ministry is active in preparing for the Feast of St. James, which will be celebrated July 24th, and 25th. Make sure to come visit and see what exciting events we have going on along with other events being hosted by Family Ministry! This week, we celebrate the Feast of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be recognized as a saint. She was beatified by St. Pope John Paul II and then canonized by Pope Benedict XVI. St. Kateri is the Patron Saint of the environment and of ecology. St. Kateri is from the Mohawk Tribe of Native Americans, and converted to Catholicism at the age of 19 years old. While she only lived until the age of 24 she was known for her devoutness which was recognized by the Jesuit missionaries that served in the surrounding areas. Kateri is the Mohawk form of Catherine as she took her name from St. Catherine of Siena, a famous Doctor of the Church. Below is a Prayer to St. Kateri from the USCCB (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops):

Blessed Kateri, you are revered as the mystic of the American wilderness.

Though orphaned at the age of four, and left with a scarred face and damaged eyesight from illness, you were esteemed among the

Mohawk tribe. When you asked to be baptized a Christian you subjected yourself to

abuse by your people and were forced to run away. You endured may trials but still flowered in prayer and holiness,

dedicating yourself totally to Christ. I ask you to be my spiritual guide along my journey through life.

Through you intercession, I pray that I may always be loyal to my faith in all things. Amen.

Dear Friends:

This past Spring, Pope Francis spoke about the importance of having a prayer life that is complimented with acts of love. He stated, “A small act of pure love is more useful to the Church than all the other works combined.” One way we can perform an act of love is by supporting this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). Your gift, given in love to

God and neighbor, will help spread Dramatic Missionary Growth across Long Island. The CMA helps fund the education of our seminarians—the future priests of the Diocese

of Rockville Centre. Your gift helps these young men focus on their studies and prayer life, instead of worrying about how they will financially support their education. Last

month, I ordained 3 men to the priesthood; your gift helped make that possible and will be remembered for years to come as they offer the Sacrifice of the Mass for generations to come.

Along with the seminarians, the CMA helps hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders

each year. Your dollars can be used to help a pregnant mother looking for resources to help her family, a homeless veteran find housing, or an individual struggling with a drug addiction receive treatment. Your gift combined with the gifts of your fellow Long

Island Catholics can be life changing for so many people—and be a light of hope for those who are in darkness.

This past year and a half have been difficult for all for us, especially those who have lost loved ones or have suffered severe financial hardships. If you have suffered from those

instances, please reach out to your local parish for support and care or call Catholic Charities at 516-733-7000. If you are able to give to the CMA, I ask you to please pray on it and give what you can. I speak for myself and your pastor when I say thank you

for your gift. Your generosity and compassion are very much appreciated.

May God bless you and your loved ones.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

July 11 - Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time:

In the Gospel today we see how Jesus sent his Apostles out two by two. From the

beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs “two by two”, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting, that

Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance. Have you considered

answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de

Paul?
