Our children were superb. Their faces lit with excitement when the Prime Minister entered the room and we were very fortunate, as most of the entertainment groups did not have the PM at their performance. This will be one of those long lasting memories that children will carry with them always. Myuna Bay excursion is next week and I know that students and staff are looking forward to a great week. Bullying is an issue that concerns all of us, and is an area that we are currently working on intensively to reduce within our school community. Miss Glencorse is implementing a program K- 6 each Thursday and Friday which will address strategies and skills for students to use if and when they experience an incident of bullying. We are working towards a bully free school in which students feel happy, safe and confident in all areas of school life. ‘Flying Start’ is an excellent transition to school program that is currently operating each Wednesday and Thursday in the Wattle block. It is a delight to see these new little people arriving at our school with such excitement and anticipation. Don’t forget the swimming schools currently being offered. There are programs for K,1 and 2-6 (non- swimmers). If you would like your child to be part of this program please return the permission notes and money to the appropriate teachers. I hope you have an enjoyable week. School Wide Bullying Focus- “Awareness breaks the cycle”

During this term, there will be a school wide focus on bullying. What is a bully? How do I know if I’m being bullied? What do I do if I’m

being bullied? Who do I tell?

Each of these questions will be asked, dis-cussed and answered throughout the term. As

well as class discussions, there will also be some student focus groups helping to raise the awareness of bullying and helping others make good choices in relation to bullying and making

friends.

The focus of this program is, “Awareness breaks the cycle”. We need to bring bullying into the open, because it thrives on secrecy. We must encourage victims to speak out as

this in itself will immediately stop some of the bullying. By educating students about what a

bully is, what to do if you are being bullied and how to cope with bullying, we are aiming to

make Bathurst West a safe and happy place to be for all students.

FUNDRAISING NEWS I will be doing one last photo run for those families who had portraits done by Wayne Milsteed. If you need to know the password to access the photos on

his website, and the cost and sizes, please call Jennie on 6331 6143. No orders will be taken after the

19th November. The P&C will be running a Chocolate Wheel at this years Carols Night instead

of an end of year raffle.Any donations for this would be greatly appreciated and can be left at the School Office.(Nuts, chips etc to go into hampers would be

good) Jennie Breach - Fundraising Coordinator

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Disclaimer As a service to the community, we will advertise events that may be of interest. Bathurst West Public School does not endorse or sponsor the events and accepts no responsibility for the management or organisation of these events.

Free Child Weight Management Program for local fami lies As you are aware, obesity is becoming an increasingly important issue in our local community with almost 25% of Australian children cur-

rently overweight or obese. If current trends continue, by 2050 it is likely that the incidence of child obesity will be closer to 50%!

The MEND Program (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!) is part of a national initiative offering free healthy lifestyle courses for children 7- 13yrs old who may not fit within the ideal weight range and their families. This is the first time that this program has been available to fami-

lies in Bathurst. The MEND Program is an evidence based healthy lifestyle program for children above their ideal weight and their families. Rather than focusing on weight loss, the Program uses a practical interactive learning approach to teach children and parents weight management

skills. This includes inspiring families to adopt a healthier l lifestyle, enjoy preparing and eating healthy foods, reading food labels and how to make healthy choices on a budget. There are also sim-

ple but exciting sessions which focus on making exercise fun again – especially for children who are not fans of traditional sports. MEND will commence in Bathurst in Term 1 and run for a period of 10 weeks with exercise, nutrition and mind sessions over this period. MEND will be offered completely free to children and families that are interested in being in- volved. For

more information please contact: Hayley Vaughan (02) 6841 5589 or 0418 454 592 [email protected]
