B’NAI SHOLOM NEWSLETTER B’NAI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER
From the RAbbi
December 2012 2
WE ARE ISRAEL
The complicated nature of life in Medinat Yisrael [the country or the state of Israel] has never been more evident to me than it is today. Last night, in the midst of the bombings taking place in the South, [we] saw a small group of Israeli Jews demonstrating outside the home of the Prime Minister against a potential Israeli invasion of Gaza… At this moment, the streets of Jerusalem are calm and busy, full of the signs and noises of everyday life and people preparing for Shabbat even as missiles rain down upon the South of Israel and Gaza – and even as troops are called up and massed for an incursion that may or may not happen. Life goes on even as tensions fill the air. Rabbi David Ellenson in an email from Jerusalem, November 16, 2012
Two and a half years ago Rabbi Ellenson proclaimed me a “Rabbi in Israel.” If he had said, “You are now a rabbi” I would have been thrilled. But he said, “Rav beYisraeil at - You are a rabbi in Israel.” How can I convey the depth of what that means to me? Israel is: klal yisraeil, a culture including a body of texts; am yisraeil, a people living all over the world and back through time; eretz yisraeil, a land, a place with its unique geography and ecology; and medinat yisrael, a modern state. None of them can exist without all the others. All are inextricably linked. That I – not even born into a Jewish family – could earn the right to be a part of all this and on top of that a teacher amidst all this… It blew my mind then and it blows my mind every time I think of it. November brought a terrible development in Israel. As a result of escalating rocket attacks from Gaza and counter strikes by the Israeli army, Israelis and Palestinians have died. I hope I don’t have to defend Israel’s actions in this case, but I will anyway. The Gaza rockets are aimed at civilian targets. The Israeli attacks are aimed at military targets. Gaza, however, is one of the most densely populated places on earth and civilians are often killed as well as military and paramilitary personnel. As I write this, a cease-fire is rumored to be only hours away. Kein yehi ratzon – may it be so. What I want you to know, what I want you to feel, is that when Israel is under attack we are all under attack and we need to support each other. If you’ve ever thought about donating money to Medinat Yisrael – the modern country of Israel and those who live there – now is a good time. My usual method of supporting Israel is to contribute to Progressive Judaism in Israel. This best expresses my values and hopes for Israel and the Middle East. At this time, the Union for Reform Judaism and the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism are both funneling their members’ efforts to the Israel Terror Relief Fund, which is coordinated by Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) to provide emergency services. Our local branch of JFNA is Jewish Federated Charities of Huntington. Federated will bundle all our contributions and send every penny of them directly to the Israel Terror Relief Fund. I urge everyone reading this to contribute to the relief effort by sending a check to Federated at P.O. Box 947, Huntington WV 25713. When we return (God willing) from our congregational trip to Israel we will have more to tell. B’Shalom – Praying for peace, Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton

B’nai B’rith: Another Successful Thanksgiving Basket Project Thanks Too Your Support, 300 Families Enjoyed Thanksgiving Dinner
After 50 years of continuous service on this project our dear friend Herman Glaser has changed his role
to project adviser. Herman and his committees have sustained this vital community service project uninterupted for over 50 years. Leadership by example is alive and well in our Congregation.
Once again this year the Committee was able to provide 300 baskets to needy members of the greater Huntington Area. The Salvation Army, senior centers and other local service organizations received the
baskets for distribution. They all expressed their heartfelt thanks to our Congregation.
Extra Special Thanks to Herb and Betty Colker for their substantial and unsolicited gift that allowed us to continue this project. Also to West Virginia Electric and the Colker Family for the much needed use of
their truck and driver to pick up the hundreds of pounds of food.
Special Thanks to the dozens of volunteers young, old and in between who unloaded the truck and staged the massive amount of food. Over 3000 pounds of potatoes alone were handled by our volunteers. And to religious school students, parents and others who packed the baskets and helped with the
distributions. It was wondrous to see members of our Congregation pulling together to keep this project alive and vital.
This project further demonstrates this Congregation’s
continuing dedication to feeding the poor.
David Glick and the Rabbi continue our on going can and food drive. Last month we participated in the Global Hunger Shabatt and at the High Holy Days many of us contributed to Jewish agencies
dedicated to ending world hunger.
THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED!

We’re counting down the
days, and we bet you are too!
The happiest Holiday of all is quickly approaching - - -are
you ready?
We are. The shop chicks have been hither and yon (just down the road from
Paradise and Eden).
Searching for everything you need to celebrate Chanukah, Hanukah, Hanuchah - - spell it anyway you like - -you will finds lots to
smile about right in the social hall.
We have Menorahs - - boy, do we have Menorahs - -glass, metal and ceramic; wooden, clay and paper – and that’s just to name a few.
We also have decorations, lights
and wrapping paper - -just to mention a few more.
We still have pictures, mouse pads, necklaces and tiles from Passion Works, a group of disabled adults making wonderful
one-of-a-kind pieces of art.
The best news? More is on the way. If you think the shop is great now, just wait a minute.
Shop early and often ‘cause you know what happens when it’s gone.

Chanukah Blessings
This year, we kindle the first candle of Chanukah on Saturday night, December 8th
and the last candle on Saturday night, December 15.
Candles are added to the Chanukiah from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. (On the Shabbat of Chanukah, kindle the Chanukah lights first and then the Shabbat candles.) Light the Shamash - the helper candle - first using it to kindle the rest of the Chanukah lights; say or sing:
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tsivanu l'hadlik ner shel Chanukah. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the Chanukah lights.
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, she-asah nisim laavoteinu v'imoteinu bayamim hahaeim baz'man hazeh. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who performed wonderous deeds for our ancestors in days of old at this season.
For first night only:
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanu v'kiy'manu v'higianu laz'man hazeh. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, for giving us life, for sustaining us, and for enabling us to reach this season. We kindle these lights because of the wondrous deliverance You performed for our ancestors. During these eight days of Chanukah, these lights are sacred; we are not to use them but only to behold them, so that their glow may rouse us to give thanks for Your wondrous acts of deliverance.
