Volgens kapt. McGregor’s first organic wineHILDERINE SCHRÖDER

Walking through the vineyards onHout-baai Farm outside McGregor it is veryclear that things are done a little differ-ently here.

Telltale signs are a variety of animaltracks, quitch-grass and vine leafs showingsigns that something has nibbled on them.

Unlike most other vineyards around theworld, Houtbaai Farm allows nature to runits course, for here pesticides are strictly for-bidden and wild animals are allowed theirshare of the crop.

When she bought the 15 hectare piece ofneglected land in July 2003 it was mainly toprovide a save haven for her animals, theownerofHoutbaai,PatWerdmullervonElgg, reveals.

A workaholic, entrepreneur and success-ful businesswoman her entire life, she decid-ed to put the existing vineyards to good useand produce wine. “I knew nothing of viticul-ture, but decided, what the heck, let’s give ita shot.”

A passionate animal lover her entire life,Pat decided to farm her grapes organically. All pine windbreaks around the vineyardwere replaced with indigenous trees and shecreateda25 mbarrierbetweenhervineyardsand the neighbouring farm, so as to adhereto regulations for organic wine production.

ThehardworkpaidoffandtodayHoutbaai, with its well-mulched vine perches for rap-tors and camera traps to snap nocturnal visi-tors, is a model farm.

Soon after going organic, Pat approachedRooiberg Winery outside Robertson to use

her grapes. This relationship not only led tothe Rooiberg team offering her invaluableviticultural advice, but also the instalmentof a special cellar, meeting organic require-ments, to make her maiden sauvignon blanclast year. Pat named it Solara.

This special wine, with its label also de-signed by Pat, and of which R3 of the sale ofeach bottle goes to the Landmark Founda-tion, will be officially launched at a wine tast-ing lunch at Temenos Retreat in McGregoron 9 May at 11:30.

Theeventwill includeathree-coursecoun-tryluncheon,thatwillcomplementthewinesto perfection. Tickets for the event cost R250and can be booked with Madie at [email protected] or 023 625 1871.

Clean auditfor Langeberg“It tookhardwork,visionandsoundstra-tegic planning to ensure yet another suc-cessful year.”

So says Soyisile Mokweni, the MunicipalManager at the Langeberg Municipality, aft-er it was announced that a third consecutiveclean audit has been awarded for the 2013-’14financial year.

The Langeberg Municipality received un-qualified reports between 2006 and 2011. In2012, 2013 and 2014 the municipality receivedconsecutive clean audit reports.

During the audit process, the municipali-ty’s governance, leadership, financial state-ments, legal compliance and performancemanagement systems were put under thespotlight.

The auditor-general team found no record-ed findings of concern.

Mokweni stated that discipline within theworkplace coupled with instilling a cultureof honesty and accountability has been thedriving force for the municipality’s success-es. He added that when a municipality re-ceives a clean audit, it means that all the lawsand regulations which have been set by na-tional government, have been adhered to.

The Langeberg Municipality is one of thefew local government organisations whowere awarded a clean audit for the 2013-’14financial year.

Ald. Diana Gagiano, Executive Mayor atthe Langeberg Municipality, expressed hergratitude towards the administration teamand councillors for their sterling effortsthroughout the year. “I would like to thankour capable management team, personneland councillors for once again proving thatthe Langeberg Municipality is one of the bestmanaged municipalities in the country.”

Mokwenisaid themunicipalityhas itseyeson the 2014-’15 financial year, with the inten-tion of receiving their fourth consecutiveclean audit.

The Langeberg Municipality has received anothercleanaudit. It is the third year running that themunic-ipality has made this achievement.
