We have had another very busy half term in all areas of school – from successes on
the sports field to festive celebrations in the community.
Highlights this term included the Year 11 Awards Evening in November when we
welcomed back our 2015 cohort; we were delighted to be joined by Dan Eley from
the Dan Eley Foundation who gave an inspirational talk to students, parents and staff.
Later in the week, we were visited by Baroness Parminter, who again motivated and
educated our students, this time about life in the House of Lords.
The Broadwater School Orchestra has been out and about in the community, taking
part in the Godalming Churches Together event last Saturday, where I had the
privilege of playing with the musicians as we performed in the town and later in St
Peter and Paul’s Church. We received some great feedback and praise from the
community. The orchestra, alongside the choir, will be performing again this
Thursday at the School Christmas Carol Concert at St John’s Church in Farncombe.
We do hope you will be able to join us at 7pm for this very festive celebration.
Finally, we are saying goodbye to Miss Regan, ICT teacher and Head of Aquila House.
Miss Regan is setting up her own business and we wish her every success. Mrs Hanson
will be the acting Head of Aquila in the Spring Term.

Philosophy 4 Children - going from strength to strength
This term we have seen a
number of exciting
developments. In
September we trained 11
more students to
become P4C champions
and they have made an
excellent start in helping
their teachers plan and
deliver P4C enquiries
during our drop down
days. Please do take a look at the account overleaf from student Elaoise Benson on
her experience.
Our P4C champions make a really positive contribution to the choice of topics we
cover in P4C and it was their decision after the Paris terror attacks that we should
cover ISIS/ISIL in P4C as they were concerned that there were a number of
misconceptions about Islam, and worries about radicalisation.
We have welcomed a number of teachers and educationalist from all over the country
to our drop down days all keen to see the model of P4C that we have introduced.
They go away extremely impressed with how articulate and confident our students
are and particularly their skills of reasoning. Within lessons, teachers are noticing a
marked improvement in the students’ oracy and thinking skills; these in turn make a
significant contribution to their ability to tackle questions in lessons.
We are also happy to announce that in January we will be welcoming visitors all the
way from Denmark who are interested in introducing P4C to their country. This is
such an exciting prospect and is testament to the students’ and teachers’ hard work
that we are now being internationally recognised.

National Conference in
London. So with some nerves

arrived at Goodenough
College, London. Here the
students and I presented to a
large conference room full or teachers, university lecturers, trainers and even visitors
from Shanghai. After the students presented they took questions from the floor with
such confidence and ease it would put most politicians to shame. It was one of my
proudest moments of my teaching career. Since our return I have been inundated
by emails of thanks and praise for our students from educators some of whom are
nationally and internationally acclaimed. A fantastic accolade.
Finally I would like to take a moment to thank Sapere and Will Ord for all their
fantastic training and support which has been so inspirational. The Broadwater
community is an exciting place to be for pupils and staff alike and P4C and the 4Cs are
at the very heart of our school.

P4C Training October 2015 – A Student’s View
Going into my fifth year at Broadwater, Philosophy for Children was a very routine
part of my school life. Starting off, I enjoyed enquires and debates with my
classmates; but the concept of philosophy always seemed to lack substance. It’s one
of those subjects we don’t explore enough in schools, so it appeared to be a very light
and airy add on to the curriculum. As I moved through the years I began to find that
there was more depth to what I had originally perceived and so over time tried to
learn and develop further in P4C. At the end of the last academic year I was asked if I
would like to take part in the P4C level 1 training course, along with a handful of other
pupils and staff. With my new found interest in philosophy I was naturally intrigued
and so accepted, not knowing quite what to expect.
A couple of weeks ago, on an inset day, a selection of us went into school for the first
day of training. Here we met the esteemed Will Ord. Will Ord works with adults and
students alike, across the country, teaching the basics of philosophical enquiry. He
has an amazing talent for balancing the levels of learning between students and
teachers; along with demonstrating a philosophical mind-set throughout. That day we
learnt about the history of philosophy, what makes a good facilitator, how we
structure an enquiry and finally participated in an enquiry ourselves. As a student it
was extremely interesting to see the back bones of a P4C lesson, what an excellent
enquiry is, as well as what makes a participant or facilitator worthy of the title ‘P4C
Champion’.
On the 19th October we had our follow up training day to build on the foundations of
our P4C knowledge. We explored different forms of reasoning and how we can use a
variety of thought processes to break down questions or words. Also we looked at
what makes a good or challenging stimulus to build our discussions from. However
throughout both days of training we also gained practical ideas for how we can
improve our classes’ philosophical debates in fun interactive ways. We took part in
numerous activities such as argument tennis and memory mapping. Both days were
innovative, informative and deepened my understanding of Philosophy.
I now know that philosophy itself isn’t a one level subject but has lots of pathways to
explore. It does have depth and intrigue and I truly believe it can help a pupils learning
across the board. I thoroughly enjoyed my training, as I know my peers did too. What’s
more I would highly recommend for any student to seize this opportunity, if it arises
for them during their time at Broadwater. I can’t thank the school enough for showing
me the true excitement and challenge in P4C, as well as Will Ord and Mrs Matthews
for making it happen. Finally I am happy to announce I am looking to continue
philosophy on as one of my college courses. An idea made possible through

GCSE Awards Ceremony 2015
We were delighted to welcome back our former students to the school on the evening of Thursday 12th November to receive their GCSE certificates and some special prizes.
The guest speaker was Mr Dan Eley from the Dan Eley Foundation, who shared his experiences with us during an inspirational talk and presentation. Prizes were awarded for the academic subjects as well as other achievements, with the Cup for Outstanding Academic Achievement going to Hannah Marshall for gaining 11 A* grades at GCSE, the Prize for Outstanding Academic Progress awarded to Holly Parrish for making 5 levels of progress across all her GCSE subjects and the Diamond Jubilee Award going to Jevon Napper for his willingness to embrace school and community life.
The evening concluded with a nostalgic slideshow, taking a look back at photos from the students' five years at the school. This was followed by the presentation of a cheque to Mr Eley for his charity and refreshments for parents, students and staff. Congratulations to our award winners - we wish all our former students all the best for the future.

Dan Eley, a young man from Surrey, worked as a charity worker with impoverished children in Latin America for two years before a diving accident in the Colombian Amazon left him paralysed from the shoulders down on New Year’s Day 2010.
The goal of The Dan Eley Foundation is to create a supportive environment where disadvantaged young children are given the opportunity to try a range of technical and vocational skills and to provide them with the professional training they need to obtain legitimate employment. Phoenix House News: I would like to congratulate the whole of the Phoenix community on the many contributions that
have been made to the House over the half term. We have seen our weekly merit totals rise and rise
and rise! In addition to this many students have contributed to various inter-house events and we
have lifted ourselves into second place in inter-house sports. Well done for those of you that are
going the extra mile with the spellathon and inter-house maths. All of these benefit our successful
House community. Within the House in the last few weeks we have started to build a display of anti-
bullying hand prints and there have been some excellent handprints that have been designed that
will contribute to this. Let’s hope for victory in the inter-house Christmas tree decorating
competition! The committee have been working really hard on making lots of fantastic decorations.

Aquila House News: The run up to the end of term and Christmas is tinged with sadness for me this year as it is also marks my last term at Broadwater School. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the school and will always treasure the memories I have of being Head of Aquila. I would like to thank all of the staff and students in Aquila for their amazing team spirit and support over the years that led the house to victory on many occasions. I will thoroughly miss you all but am pleased that I will be leaving you in Mrs Hanson’s very capable hands! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, a happy new year and every success for the future!

Pegasus House News: Well, here we are at the end of the a busy half term that has seen Pegasus students involved in many events and activities proving that we incorporated the ethos of the 4Cs in everything we do – Collaborative, Caring, Creative and Critical. We have welcomed a number of new students into our house and wish to congratulate them on the positive start that they have made. Finally I would like to wish all of the Pegasus team, students, staff and of course parents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Attendance this half term = 94.1% Student recognition There have been a number of special efforts by Pegasus students this half term but particular mention should go to the students that have taken part in the Inter-House Maths competition and kept Pegasus at the top, those that have represented our house in the recent Spellathon and the ‘Christmas Tree’ committee led by Morgen Powney, Emily Johnson and Maria Giles who have been planning the ‘sequel’ to last year’s winning entry!
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Broadwater School Orchestra
Christmas has definitely arrived! On Saturday the orchestra took part in the Godalming Churches Together Christmas Events despite the rather windy, blustery and damp conditions. At 2pm we played an hour of music on the High Street with many favourable comments being passed to us by members of the public. At 3pm we packed the drumkit back into the minibus, picked up our music stands and instruments and walked to St Peter and St Paul’s Church to perform in the town Carol Service. This, again, was a great success and many more positive comments were received including an open invitation from Rev. Mervyn Roberts to use his church for lunchtime and evening concerts to bring ‘more music to the people of Godalming’. I would like to personally thank all of the students for their continued hard work and dedication, to their parents for their continued support in the musical life of Broadwater and, of course, to Mr Lee and Mr Smith-Rogers who come to rehearsal each week. Exam success Congratulations to Alys Gilbert who passed her Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Grade 4 Violin exam last week with a Merit. This is a wonderful and well deserved achievement. Broadwater Carol Concert As you read this newsletter we will be looking forward to our Carol Concert once again at St John’s Church in Farncombe. I will be posting pictures onto the school website and in our next newsletter. School Production June 2016 Update! Auditions for the principal characters in our production of Annie will be held during the second week of the new term. Students have been given their audition pieces and I look forward to hearing them all. SLCN Centre Trip to Sayers Croft – 21st to 23rd October 2015
Our annual Key Stage 3 COIN Centre trip to Sayers Croft, Ewhurst took place just before the half-term holiday. Mr Whitman and I took 10 students from Years 7, 8 and 9 away from Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd October. After a damp start as we arrived on the Wednesday morning the rain cleared mid-afternoon and then we had a dry trip. The first thing to be done on our arrival was to make up the beds in ‘Bramley’ our accommodation for the visit. Those students not used to putting a duvet into its cover soon learnt!! On the Wednesday afternoon we had a busy itinerary of archery, the climbing wall and shelter building, getting back to Bramley just in time to go off for supper. The day ended with songs around the campfire on which we toasted marshmallows. Thursday was a packed day starting with orienteering, practising our maths and collaborative skills. Then caving, the zip-wire, the challenge course and finally in the dimming light the maze and blind-fold trail. The challenge course was a great success. All ten students worked together during the course to complete the whole circuit without touching the ground. They listened carefully to instructions and planned how to carry them out. These could include moving position in the line or getting another person from one place to another or negotiating obstacles. Rob our leader from the activity centre was impressed at how well they were able to problem solve as a team. Mr Whitman and I were able to sit back and proudly watch! On Thursday evening we went on a night walk through the woods around the site following a reflective trail. We then went back to the dormitory for hot chocolate and an ‘early night’. On our final day we spent the morning on the high ropes course. Our focus for the trip had been the 4Cs, throughout our busy programme there was a lot of emphasis on collaborative and caring thinking. However critical and creative skills were required to problem solve and when challenging ourselves to develop new skills and overcome fears. Two of the year 9 students, Sasha & Georgia, who had been to Sayers Croft before went on the high ropes course which they had not done before. There were many other challenges and successes during the trip. We had a great time and we are already looking forward to next year!! Warner Brothers’ Studio Trip
It all began with a book about a young
boy with lightning scar, who on his
11th birthday learns that he is a
wizard.
On 4th November, an excited group of
Broadwater Muggles set forth on a
long awaited trip to the Warner
Brothers Studio. The home of the
making of the Harry Potter films. We
were to enter the enchanted world
from which the best-selling books all
over the world were made into the
biggest film series in history.
The tour enabled our students to set
foot on the actual sets from which their
favourite movies were filmed. Having
been issued with passports, we
entered Hogwart’s School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry via the awe
inspiring Great Hall - the setting for
Hogwart’s abundant feasts, with its
huge fireplace and enchanted ceiling.
We gazed at the Gryffindor common room, where the password ‘Caput Draconis’ was
needed by the young wizards to gain entry. In this medieval looking room we were to
observe the cosy sofas and the portraits on the walls of the Gryffindor Heads of
House, including that of Professor McGonegal and the radio which received
broadcasts from the Wizarding Wireless Network.

and Ron Weasley shared a room with
Neville Longbottom, Seamus
Finnegan and Dean Thomas.
A stroll along the atmospheric Diagon
Alley with its multitude of shops had
us almost believing we were
characters in the stories. We were to learn that the richly detailed street was inspired
by streets described in the works of Charles Dickens.
We stared into the window of Weazley’s WizzardiWheezes, where the Weasley twins
sold everything from Puking Pastilles to fireworks. Ollivander’s wand shop, (where
Harry Potter’s wand chose him), housed more than 17,000 individually labelled wand
boxes.
We all agreed that Gringott’s Bank, (run by goblins), and guardian of the wizards’
sickles, knuts and galleons, would be the safest place to store our valuables.
We were all excited to see the latest acquisition to the studio, - the magnificent
Hogwart’s Express, stationed at
Hogsmeade and used to transport the
student wizards to school. We were
able to board the train, test the
comfort of the seats and imagine
ourselves on the journey.
We finally wandered towards the
coach home, having sampled butter
beer, ridden on broomsticks,
examined the spell potions, costumes
and props, re-living our experience. We pondered. Given the choice - which would be
the preferred school for our students? Hogwart’s or Broadwater? A tough decision!

Year 9 visit to the Surrey Skills Fair
The whole of year 9 recently visited the Surrey Skills Fair where a host of educational providers and employers were available for students to ask questions and enquire about ‘life after Broadwater’. Students were encouraged to interact with the staff on the stands and were
given stickers when they made enquiries. Many of the stands provided interactive activities to engage the students, including creating structures from spaghetti and jelly babies and shooting hoops. Some students were even able to show off their musical talents at the Academy of Contemporary Music stand where some current students were on hand to accompany them. All students had an enjoyable time and learnt a great deal about all the wonderful opportunities available to them when they leave Broadwater School. Mr Nathan Smith-Rogers Assistant Headteacher

Ex-student Henry Lamont was named as Oxford’s
captain for the Varsity match on Thursday 10th
December at Twickenham. He will be outside centre
and will be opposite Jamie Roberts….ouch! Henry is
currently studying Chemistry at New College, Oxford.
Current students Imogen and Olivia Braiden Sisters Imogen and Olivia Braiden participated in G.K.R. UK National Championships on 20th November 2015 held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. Olivia came 4th for Kata and 11th for Kumite. Imogen came 1st for Kata and 3rd for Kumite. Imogen won Gold for Kata and Bronze for Kumite. Imogen is currently National Champion for Kata 14 to 16 years 7th kuy. Well done girls!
PE and Sport News This has been another busy half term for sport. Students have had the opportunity to take part in Interhouse netball, basketball, and trampolining in all year groups, plus the Year 7 and 8 Interhouse indoor sports hall athletics competitions. Currently, Aquila are in the lead with 515 points, followed by Phoenix with 405 points and very closely behind is Pegasus on 395 points. It looks like it’s going to be a close contest again this year. The more students who get involved the more points for your house, so make sure you come along to Interhouse competitions in the New Year. In particular, get involved in the Swim Gala at the end of January. Every student who takes part in Interhouse competitions will receive 2 merits. Last week Year 7 took part in the Indoor Sports Hall Athletics Competition. 16 students went to Woolmer Hill School and competed against 9 other schools. Well done to all who took part. The girls in particular did exceptionally well coming third out of ten teams, beating Woolmer Hill, Guildford County, Weydon, All Hallows, Kings College, Farnham Heath End School and Glebelands. An amazing achievement considering the small size of Broadwater School. The girls now go on to represent Waverley at the County finals in February. Well done to:- Daisy Margaillan Emily Snelgrove Noelle Sharma Natasha Hounslow Emily Hay Caitlin Rees Rose Bevan Jessie Taylor This term Sue Goode from Guildford Athletics Club came into school on two Tuesdays after school to coach Year 7, 6 and 5 pupils from local primary schools. This was to help prepare pupils for the above competition and for the Year 5 and 6 competition after Christmas. There are two sessions remaining after Christmas.
On Thursday 3rd December ten Broadwater students from Year 8 attended the Surrey Schools Leadership Conference. They learnt some new ideas for leadership work and improved their leadership skills. They were inspired by guest speaker Toby Garbett who remembered visiting Broadwater three years ago. All ten students enjoyed the experience and we hope to put some of their ideas into practice after Christmas. In particular they hope to deliver some sessions to some of our SEN students on a Monday lunch time at the Inclusive Sportability Club run by Mrs Alford. On Thursday 13th November four pupils took part in the Cross Country Trials at Charterhouse. The top six runners go on to represent Waverley. Our students did very well. In particular, Issy Davis from Year 10 came 4th. Issy will go on to represent Waverley in January at the Surrey Championships. Well done to all who took part. Well done to the Year 10 Netball team who won their district netball tournament beating Rodborough and Woolmer Hill. They will now go forward to represent Waverley at the County finals in March.
The year 10 netball team players are: Lizzie Rhodes, Innes Perry, Issy Davis, Ellie Appleton, Kerry Jones, Elena Fletcher, Laura Hirons and Mollie Stewert. On Wednesday 25th November and Wednesday 2nd December we took part in the Girls’ Cricket Indoor Tournament which was held at Broadwater. Well done to all those who played. This year we are again taking part in the Sky Living Project. The cricket committee are organising the inter form cricket competition after Christmas as part of this project.
The Sky Living Project have allocated an athlete mentor to the school. This year we have been given Nolli Waterman, an England women’s rugby player. On Monday 30th November Nolli came into school and lead an assembly, presenting our year 10 netball team with the medals they had won the previous week and talking about her journey within sport. She then worked with a select group of 20 students, encouraging key leadership skills, working on communication, confidence and team work. The
students had a great time and got to hold her gold medal! Nolli will be returning in March on the final day of the cricket tournament which we are very much looking forward to. Last week we held a special Sports Assembly giving out colours to students who have represented the school at sport three times or more. We also rewarded hard working students with £5.00 cinema vouchers. We are hoping to put a mirror up in the girls changing rooms as requested. We are also hoping to purchase a basketball kit which was also requested. Netball

Trip to Twickenham
Mr Cook, Mrs Hatcher and Mr Whitman took 26 students to the 134th Varsity Match
at Twickenham on December 10th. It was a hard fought game between Oxford and
Cambridge with both sides defending and rucking well to keep the ball. Oxford won
in the end but it was a fantastic experience for the students who got to see the
excellent national stadium which hosted the World Cup final earlier this year. The
year 11 boys even managed to find Jamie Roberts before he played for Cambridge
and grab a picture.

Cricket Committee Report
This half term we have been preparing for interform cricket by taking part in the Sky Sports Living for Sport project run by Nolli Waterman, and England women's rugby player. We spent the morning with her working on some skills we can use for running the interform matches. We also announced the raffle for the signed cricket bat that was, donated to us. At every interform match raffle tickets will be sold and the winner will be drawn at the final when Nolli comes back in. We have also got a few new Year 7 members in the BCA after the project. Interform will commence after the Christmas break. Have a great Christmas from the BCA!
Project Ability Festival
On Friday 13th November a group of 6 boys in Years 8-9 attended the Surrey School
Games, Project Ability Games held at Surrey Sports Park. They were asked to join in
activities of Hockey and Cricket with another 11 school from the area.
They got to learn new skills in the morning session and then got to put these skills into
practise by competing in games against other school. They were scored according to
how well they played but also by the number of points scored in the games.
At the end of the day Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were given to the top 3 schools
in both Hockey and Cricket. Our students won Bronze medals in Cricket.
They all had a great time with many students wanting to attend again.

GASP Motor mechanics
This term saw three students from the COIN unit undertake a 10 week course at one
of GASP workshops. They had the chance to work on a variety of vehicles like cars,
ride on lawnmowers, go karts, bicycles, electric cars and quad bikes. They got the
chance to remove the interior of a vehicle as well as carry out safety vehicle checks
like brakes, oil levels and tyre pressures. They learned how to complete safety
paperwork too.
They also got to make clocks out of the speedometer in the dashboard. The boys had
two great teachers Barrie and Richard who were very patient and clear with the
instructions for the work that was to be carried out that day. The boys had to wear
overalls and protective shoes as part of their uniform too.
They had a great chance to take the quad bikes and ride them around the Dunsfold
Park. The day was cold and windy but this did not put a damper on their day.
Joshua commented “It was good, fun and lots to learn”.
The whole experience has been fantastic for them and they have grown in confidence
from it.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:- 1. Pupils identified by police and education welfare officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences. 2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which becomes law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised. Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised. 3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered if the attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration. If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Education Welfare Officer. Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.) Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the recipient will be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.
Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences; for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice. If there are two parents and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days. LATENESS AND PUNCTUALITY
I have written to advise all parents and guardians that student lateness in arriving at school in the morning has been a focus over the past few months resulting in some improvement. To effect further improvement I am taking this opportunity to formalise the procedures, outlined below, that we are going to follow in relation to this issue so that parents, students and staff are all fully aware of our expectations with regards to students’ arrival at school in the morning :-
Arrival after 8.40am (this is monitored on a daily basis) = Level 1 Late (10 mins detention at the end of that day with the tutor/support tutor – we will be mindful of those students who have to get to a taxi or bus and alternative arrangements will be made) 3 x late arrival after 8.40am in a half term = Level 2 Late triggering a letter from the attendance team (SLO/JAD) to parents raising concerns over the lateness of the student 2 x Level 2 late in a half term = Parent and student will be invited to attend a ‘Late’ panel meeting with SLO/JAD and if appropriate the Education Welfare Officer
These expectations have been explained to all of our students and I look forward to further improvement in our level of lateness in the coming term. I know that you will appreciate the importance of students arriving at school on time and ensuring that they attend registration and prepare for the day ahead and will support me and the rest of the staff in reinforcing this important message.
