BROADWATER SCHOOL

Our Year 7 & 8 Rugby Team are performing well this term

Dear Parents and Guardians

Commitment and dedication are two important requisites that you need from staff

to be able to help students achieve their full potential. Such dedication has been

seen recently by staff through the extended training that they have undertaken to

develop their skills with Philosophy for Children (P4C). Recently staff gave up a

second Saturday this year to continue training from the Inset on the Friday. You can

read more about the detail in this newsletter but I have to say how proud I am of

the staff for their willingness to go the extra mile. The P4C training is just one

example of this, as are the many extra-curricular opportunities that staff are

providing for the students. Of course, what makes giving up your time worthwhile is

the equal commitment and attitudes to learning from the vast majority of the young

people we have in our care. To see them grow and develop their skills, knowledge

and understanding is the best part of the job.

The positive attitudes to learning are what is now required of our year 11 as they

move into their final weeks of GCSE. After half term we have another set of pre-

public exams that will in some subject areas determine whether students do the

higher or foundation papers. So it is important that students revise thoroughly for

these exams. This is their last chance to have a trial of how well their revision is

working for them and of course learn what went well and what could be improved

in preparation for the real exams after Easter.

Later this term we have Challenge Week starting on 16th March. Year 11 will have a

specific focus on additional English and Maths work, Year 10 will be on work

experience, Years 7 – 9 will be engaged in a wide range of alternative activities both

in and out of school including the PGL and ski trips. I know this is going to be a fun

and challenging week that will take many of our students out of their comfort zone.

We learn best when we have to struggle to overcome a problem because this is

when we learn the strategies of resilience.

Finally, we organised some further e-safety training for our students, kindly

supported by Eagle Radio. We have provided you with further guidance in this

newsletter on the dangers of on-line chat rooms, cyber-bullying and child sexual

exploitation. This occurs out of school so as parents you need to be both aware and

vigilant. For more information you can go to the school website or CEOP internet

safety.

Although this has been a short half term I am certainly ready for the week’s break.

It seems we try to cram in just as much into a 6 week half term as we do into a 7-8

week half term.

Best wishes

Chris Lee

Headteacher

Year 9 Surrey Skills Fair Year 9 spent the morning at the Surrey Skills Fair held at Surrey Sports Park on February 5th. There were plenty of opportunities to have a go at the hands-on interactive exhibits and to obtain careers advice and guidance. We hope that the students gained a broader understanding of the careers options available to them and gained a greater awareness of the skills needed to succeed in a diverse range of industries.

Page 4: Broadwater News February 2015

Thomson Reuters Technology Careers Insight Day On Monday the 9th February a group of year 9 students went to Thomson Reuters for the day. The aim of the day was to get the students thinking about careers in technology. The day started with a short presentation about who Thomson Reuters are. This was followed by a speed networking session where students were able to ask questions to people in different fields who had titles such as User Experience Operations Manager, Global Technical Specialist, Digital Communications Specialist, Business Analyst, to name but a few. We then stopped for lunch, which had been provided for us consisting of pizza, chips and salad. In the afternoon the students went into smaller groups; Designing Cool Things (Interactive designer), Fixes Cool Things (Problem analyst) and Building Cool Things (Network engineer). Each group was given a challenge which required the students to use creative thinking, problem solving, analytical, presentation and communication skills. At the end of the day each students had a lovely cupcake which had the Thomson Reuters logo. Students were then asked to write a post it notes of what they had got out of the day. These comments were then judged and the best three won prices. Adam Ellis won a cricket bat, George Devereux won a backpack and Elena Carabineru won a hockey stick. It was a great day out were I think the students gained a great insight into careers in Technology.

Year 10 Gifted & Talented Trip to Oxford University At Broadwater School we recognise students as individuals with unique gifts and talents. With this in mind we have established links with Oxford University through their Pathways Scheme. As part of this scheme, ten of our year 10 students were invited, on February 10th, to visit Oxford University for the day. The event gave students the chance to explore Oxford, meet with currents undergraduates and have a taste of lectures. It was a fantastic day out and links with the University have undoubtedly raised student aspirations, giving them an insight into the benefits and opportunities offered by study at Oxford and other top end Universities. Mrs Louise Simmons, Trip Leader

Philosophy for Children

At Broadwater we believe that we are all part of a learning community and that the ability to learn and think is a skill that has to be developed over a lifetime. P4C (Philosophy for Children) and the 4Cs (critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinking) are therefore at the heart of our curriculum. This particular discipline started with Matthew Lipman in America. He recognised that his students needed to learn how to be critical about their thoughts and the opinions of others around them. In a world where we are fighting extremist views, corruption, a freely accessible internet and technology that is moving quicker than ever, it has never been so important that our students learn to challenge themselves and develop skills that will help them become better learners, citizens and role models for the future. Our staff's commitment to P4C is unquestionable; and so it was that 17 teachers found themselves embarking on a 4 day professional qualification (run by Will Ord, Professor Barry Hymer and SAPERE ) held over 2 weekends.

It was without a doubt one if the most challenging courses that I have even been part of, but more crucially being able to share this process with our staff was extremely valuable. Between us we planned and facilitated 8 enquiries and then waited with trepidation whilst our course leaders and colleagues gave us critical feedback. By the end of the process our brains ached but our skills had improved immeasurably. We are now anxious to put our new found knowledge and skills into practice with our students.

I would like to thank all the staff who gave up valuable family time at the weekends to commit to P4C and their students. It is this level of commitment from our staff that makes Broadwater such a special and unique environment. Mrs Matthews, Deputy Headteacher

Online Dangers and E-Safety Advice

Although we regularly print information in Broadwater News

about e-safety with details of how students can stay safe online,

we have recently been made aware of a website that has some

aspects that could potentially pose a danger to vulnerable

students. Although we do need to stress that any website that

has chat rooms or forums could be equally unsafe.

The website we have recently come across is called ROBLOX and has an online

gaming environment similar to Minecraft. The website is aimed at young children

and allows them to build and craft environments online, like many websites aimed

at children it does have a parent section and does have the option to report any

inappropriate behaviour through CEOP. However, the website does have chat

forums with the option for webcam chats, the ability for users for send and receive

direct messages that cannot be seen on the forum and links to ‘off-site’ forums. It is

this aspect of the website, and any other website that has these features, that

makes it potentially unsafe for young people to use without their use being

monitored.

We advise all parents and carers to ensure that computer

use is monitored regularly and preferably set up in the same

room as the adults in the family. We would also encourage

you to regularly check any messages your child receives or

sends in forums and private messages. In addition you

should remind them not to use a webcam in chat rooms and

to place a sticker over the camera when it is not in use to

ensure it can never be accessed by hackers without the user’s knowledge.

In addition to the dangers of online communities, we would also like to take this

opportunity to remind you that the increase in use of mobile devices by young

people can also bring with it added dangers. Most parents and carers are aware of

the dangers of cyber bullying, but you should

also make sure your children are aware of the

laws surrounding cyber bullying and the

storage of images of young people on their

devices.

If your child is involved in cyber bullying in any form they need to be aware that any

picture or content linked to a threat counts as harassment and they could be

Page 9: Broadwater News February 2015

prosecuted under the 1997 Protection from Harassment Act, or the Public Order Act

1986 and the Malicious Communications Act 1988. This is something that needs to

be remembered even if your child is being bullied as this would also apply to any

comments made in retaliation. If your child is being bullied online or with a mobile

device we would advise that you use online reporting features such as CEOP or

report it to the police using the non-emergency number 101.

Your child also needs to be aware that taking pictures of

someone without consent when they are in private premises

contravenes privacy laws that apply to photographers or

anyone with a camera. This means that students must not

take any images or recordings of any students or members of

staff without their knowledge as this in an infringement of

their privacy rights. There are also strict laws surrounding the storage or

distribution of any explicit or indecent images of children aged under 18, this also

includes re-tweeting images or forwarding messages that contain images.

Therefore, it is important that you ensure your child keeps themselves safe by not

posting or sending any images of themselves of a sexual nature. It is equally

important that they also know that sharing indecent images of themselves or others

is a crime and they could be prosecuted for storing and distributing inappropriate

images of a minor and could ultimately be added to

the sex offenders register.

For more information and advice please refer to our

school website and click on the ‘Click CEOP –

internet safety’ icon on the bottom left of the school webpage.

Accelerated Reader

Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded with prizes for their achievements on the Accelerated Reader programme. Each student is set a target at the beginning of term, based on their results in a very thorough reading test. The aim is then to beat your target by the highest percentage possible. Broadwater School have only ever had one pupil exceed 2000 % of their target (Jake Boxall last year) so to see two pupils break this mark this term, and two more so close is a staggering achievement. Particular congratulations to Ted Barnet who has the all-time highest score so far, and has read over 5 million words in just 14 weeks.

The prizes won (Kindles or Amazon vouchers) are to the left, and the figure you see to the right of their name is the percentage of target achieved.

PE and Sports News The spring term can often be a quiet period for sport after school due to the low light levels but we have had lots of students at rugby practices on a Thursday and students at football practice on a Tuesday. Well done to the students who have continued to train through the cold weather and I am sure it will pay off when we play more games next half term. Rugby

Page 13: Broadwater News February 2015

The Yr 7 & 8 rugby team played away at Barrow Hills School and had a competitive but enjoyable game of rugby. It was a very cold afternoon but that did not stop either team from playing really good rugby. At half time Barrow Hills were leading 20-14 but the team were determined to do better. In the second half an early try from Jason Newman put the Barrow Hills team under pressure, but they responded with tries of their own. Harvey Penton Stewart and Josh Hitchcock were kicking well to add points and close the gap but Barrow Hills were still ahead. Our last try came from Tom Higgins in Yr 7 diving in the corner but it was not quite enough and the game finished 39-34 to Barrow Hills. It was a great game and we all look forward to the next game after half term. Yr 11 Football

The Yr 11 footballers played away to Guildford County at Surrey Sports Park on a cold Thursday evening. The team were a little nervous going into the match as the opposition were 2 times district champions but they started brightly. Quite soon into the match the temperature dropped and it began to snow and hail with all players struggling to make much progress in the blizzard. David Voller played very well in goal and made some important saves while Anthony Bean and Nathan Morris were linking well to cause the home team problems. Guildford County scored a well worked goal but Anthony Bean equalised soon after. The home team

Page 14: Broadwater News February 2015

took the lead again and seemed sure to win the match but in the last kick of the game Broadwater won a corner and Ryan Coombes beat his marker to head the ball in. The game finished 2-2 and was a very hard fought point for the team. The last game is against Rodborough after half term. Badminton Miss Palmer has been working hard with the badminton players after school and 4 of our GCSE students spent the day at Howard of Effingham learning how to be officials. The day was very interesting and has given our students the first steps to being qualified badminton umpires. Well done to Brooke Darbon, George Edwards, Ryan McQuillan and Megan Davey. Yr 8 Cricket team The indoor cricket team played in the Surrey School games indoor competition and played several matches against local schools. They won their first match against Howard of Effingham after chasing a score of 36 runs off 6 overs with an over to spare. Charlie Le Masurier, Harvey Penton Stewart and Tom Parrish all played well batting and bowling to keep pressure on the opposition with catches in the field from Callum Stewart and Josh Hitchcock. They were beaten by a high scoring Guildford County team but learnt some important lessons for the summer term when the team will move outside and to 11 aside cricket. Well done to all the players.

Twickenham Visit Congratulations to Jacob Davis who was chosen by the PE department to represent Broadwater School at Twickenham stadium before England play Italy on Saturday 14th Feb. He will join many other students from across the country to unveil the schools new rugby kit that was designed by 4 Broadwater students in November. Jacob will take part in some pre match rugby before the match and then walk out onto the pitch before the players from the national team. This will be the first time the new shirt is seen by anyone so what better place for it to be seen than Twickenham before England play. We all wish Jacob good luck and hope he enjoys the day. All students are reminded that Rugby club is run on a Thursday lunchtime and Thursday after school till 4:30. All are welcome. Mr Stuart Cook, PE Subject Leader During the first week of term we held a Sports assembly where we gave out sports colours to students who had taken part in fixtures at least 3 times in specific sports. We also awarded cinema vouchers to students who had worked particularly hard in P.E before Christmas. Year 7 footballers who received colours were:- Alex Bickmore Jack Clemons Tye Hackman Tom Higgins Josh Hitchcock Nicholas Infante Jack Lawson Charlie Le Masurier Matt Lowe Shannon Smith Callum Stewert

Year 7 netballers who received colours were:- Poppy Campbell Natasha Hines Lily Horner Maddy Keane

The cricket committee have been running Inter form cricket most lunchtimes. The competition is being played in a knock out format and we intend to have a winning overall form before Easter.

Broadwater hosted the Waverley Schools Indoor Athletics Competition on Thursday 22nd January. This was a fantastic event and was attended by 7 Primary schools. The afternoon was aimed at Years 5 and 6 and saw pupils taking part in jumping, throwing and running events. It was highly competitive and had an amazing atmosphere.

The year 5 and 6 event was followed by the Year 7 competition after school. Broadwater entered a team and did exceptionally. The girls team came 1st overall and the boys third. The end result therefore put us in second position beating Glebelands and Woolmer Hill but coming second to Rodborough. An amazing achievement.

Well done to:- Amaia Power – Raskin, Gemma Spencer, Lily Collyer, Poppy Campbell, Jess McKenzie, Rosie Savage, Christina Savedra, Natasha Hines, Nell Hutson, Maddy Keane Amy Marchant, Ted Barnett, Alex Bickmore, Jacob Davis, Tom Higgins, Josh Hitchcock, Charlie Le Masurier and Toshi Melling

The Inter house competition is again close this year. Present scores are :- Aquila = 1135 Phoenix = 965 Pegasus = 1005 Our Young Leaders have also been busy again. 6 of our Year 8 and 9 students are helping out at Loseley Fields Primary school. They are helping to run their school netball club after school every Wednesday. Thank you girls for giving up your time. On Tuesday 27th January we held our Annual Inter House Swimming Gala. It was a fantastic event and around 50 students took part. 2 school records were broken and we saw some amazing swimming. Well done to Aquila who came first, Pegasus who were second and Phoenix who came third. Well done to the following students who broke school records! Just a reminder to keep your eyes on the P.E noticeboards for clubs and fixtures. Waverley Borough Council will be running their annual training sessions in the run up to the Youth Games. If you’re interested in being part of the Waverley Youth Games sports teams there will be an assembly next half term with more details of how to get involved. There are lots of different sports on offer. Last week Broadwater hosted the annual Gifted and Talented Festival for KS2. St Barts, The Chandler, St Mary's and St James' schools all attended. Pupils took part in trampolining, badminton, hockey and handball. 25 young leaders were involved in delivering these sports to the younger pupils and they did an excellent job.

Page 18: Broadwater News February 2015

The year 8 & 9 Waverley and Ash Badminton Tournament took place at Broadwater at the start of term. Our boys’ team did particularly well coming 1st beating Glebelands and Weydon schools. The winning boys’ team then went forward to represent Waverley at Guildford Spectrum in the next round of the competition. Well done to:- Tom Lawson, Elliott Weston, Jojo Fyffe and Harvey Penton Stewart Last week also saw 16 of our Young leaders being trained by outside coaches in partnership with Active Surrey, especially to enable them to help deliver the Annual Disability Day at Charterhouse School which takes place just before Easter. Students were shown how to deliver adapted sports and to help enhance their leadership skills. Mrs Kerry Fowler, PE Department

STUDENT SERVICES LOST PROPERTY: All lost property will be donated to charity if it is not claimed by FRIDAY 6th March 2015 Medical Conditions and Medication All schools are now required to record details of any medication brought in to school by pupils, even if the medication is required on a temporary basis. Parents / Guardians are asked to supply the following information:

Name of medication

Frequency of medication

Dosage

If the medication is to be refrigerated

If the medication is to be brought home on a daily basis Please also provide any other relevant information that you think the Student Services team should be aware of. This information can be sent to the school via a letter or email [email protected]. It is important that if your child develops a medical condition or there is a change to a pre-existing medical condition, please notify Student Services at the earliest opportunity using the email address mentioned above. Please note, should a more serious medical condition develop, then you may be asked to attend a meeting in school to ascertain more details and if necessary produce a Health Care Plan. If you need any help in providing this information or have any queries / concerns please call Student Services on 01483 520642.

ATTENDANCE Please note below guidance that has been issued by Surrey County Council that I need to draw to your attention. Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:- 1. Pupils identified by police and education welfare officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

Page 21: Broadwater News February 2015

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which becomes law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised. Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised. 3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered if the attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration. If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Education Welfare Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the recipient will be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences; for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice. If there are two parents and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days.

Advice and support is available from an Education Welfare Officer by contacting your local Education Office as follows:- North West - Tel: 01483 519900 South West - Tel: 01483 517900 North East - Tel: 01372 833000 South East - Tel: 01737 737600

Fundraising Update

We can't do it without you! Please support our events and activities to help raise funds for items on the School's Wish List (which include):

3D Printer (£1495) in support of all STEM (science, technology, engineering, & mathematics) subjects and for use by a new STEM extra-curricular club.

IPad Air (£359) for instant playback of drama performances in lessons.

Football Kit (£400) for school matches, across all year groups.

Thanks to your support, the Christmas Carol Concert (Raffle & Refreshments) raised £219.50 for the school! Your generosity means we've been already been able to fund the following urgent items on the School's Wish List:

12 Anemometers (to measure wind speed) for the Geography Department to use for Geography field work and Y7's micro-climate survey.

Duke of Edinburgh Award programme expedition kit: including a tent, compasses and sleeping mats. The remaining money from the Godalming Town Council grant and £55 from the Friends was used to fund these items.
