“The Story of the Weeping Camel”Saturday, April 26, 2014, 1:45 to 3:30 p.m., Assisi auditorium stage classroom Cost: $5
This breathtaking blend ofdocumentary and fictionfilmmaking provides anunobtrusive glimpse intothe relationships, rituals, and livelihood of a four-generation family ofnomadic shepherds in theGobi desert of SouthMongolia. It is birthingseason for the family’sherd of camels and afterseveral healthy foals areborn, the last birth is difficult. With quietperseverance, the family helps to deliver a rarewhite colt, which the mother camel quickly rejectsand refuses to nurse. With growing concern for thecolt’s survival, the family decides to employ anomadic singing ritual to coax the mother intonurturing her young. They send the two eldestsons on a journey to the nearest village to fetch amusician for the “hoos ritual.” The story unfoldsgently, sensitive to the rhythms of desert life whilehonoring its real-life actors. This modest yetmagnificent film is the graduation project of filmstudents Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni, extending beyond the tale of a camel and colt toexplore the fragility and beauty of an ancient way oflife.

The Resurrection of the Lord A
Reading I: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Responsorial Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23
Reading II: Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians5:6b-8
Gospel: John 20:1-9 or Matthew 28:1-10
Dawn
Most people see Easter through the lens of GoodFriday. This was the point of a short homily onGood Friday many years ago, given by Fr. MartyPalmer, one of my best teachers. I heard his pointas this: we are often so intricately aware of thetroubles of our lives, of the things we need to besaved from, that the crucifixion touches us verydeeply, even though the Resurrectionoften remains just outside our grasp.
We have some hints about Easter, Isuppose. It makes things alright again, doesn’t it? But what does that mean? And somewhere lurks the question, didhe really come back to life?
If you have ever had this kind ofreaction, you are like the disciples, butperhaps better off. look at the statethey must have been in. Memories ofJesus’ life had burst apart in the terriblechaos of the Passion. His teachings, forinstance. “love one another.” “Be good to thosewho hate you.” But now there was no Jesus tostand behind these sayings. no voice saying,“Come, follow me.” He was gone, along witheverything he had taught. Their beliefs weretransformed into a lie. It had to be crushing, andthey were, suitably, crushed.
But there was secret news, not yet out. love hadnot been defeated at all. Though everything else inJesus could die, love could not. God lasts foreverand God is love. The real meaning of life (and, need I add, of suffering and of death) at last hadbeen revealed: love remains through it all.
How did the disciples ever get this news? It wasnot the stories brought by those who had actuallyseen Jesus and spoken with him (women). For themost part the apostles (males) did not believe these
Spirituality of the Readings accounts. Maybe the appearance of Jesus in theirmidst, hair-raising as that must have been, toldthem. But doubting Thomas had to touch theactual wounds before he could believe. In the endit was the onrushing gift of the Holy Spirit, settlingway down in their hearts, that made it all start tocome clear.
They caught on, some of them, during the breakingof the bread at Emmaus. Did you see it, they mighthave said; that is what he did with us at the lastsupper! He broke bread. This is my body, he said.
They began to remember again, and for the firsttime to understand his last lesson for them abouthis life. “love one another” was good advice butnow he himself had done it—even unto death.“Turn the other cheek,” he told them, but then hesaid, “I gave my cheek to those who would pluck
out my beard.” Wasn’t that originallyin Isaiah? Well, Jesus let them pluck outhis life as well. He did it because hewould not betray God’s love for them;his love as well.
So he will be with us always, since he isthe revelation of the love of God theeternal. He will be in the bread andwine. In the Spirit. And that is whatEaster means.
It will take us the rest of our lives tounderstand. For now let us just beholdit. The rising of the sun in the East. The
rising of the Son in the dawn of love, out of thedimness of death and degradation.
