Wow, does me fly! It seems like just yesterday we were celebra ng Thanksgiving, and now Christmas and New Years have now passed. Once again, thanks to everyone

who made our celebra ons this past month so won-derful. The big news I would like to relate to you is that the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Saint Barbara are having a major mee ng here from Janu-ary 11th through the 15th. This mee ng is called a Chapter and it is an opportunity for all the Francis-can Brothers on the West Coast to gather, reflect, make changes, and to elect new Franciscan leader-ship for the Province. Generally, we have a Chapter such as this once every six years. Fr. John Hardin, our provincial for the past six years, will be moving out of office. A er Chapter, possibly in February, the new administra-

on meets and some of our brothers are assigned to different places and new brothers move in. This is one of the basic reali es of our lives, that we are in service to the needs of the Church and society at large. I know these changes can be sad or diffi-cult. Please remember us in prayer in a special way and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us as we deliber-ate. I'll keep you posted on how things develop. May the good Lord give you peace of mind and joy in this New Year. Fr. David

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafi scratched in chalk over some doorways: “20 + C + M + B + 16.” The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably a er Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the le ers C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, La n for “May Christ bless this house.” The le ers also point to the names that tradi on has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—although scrip-ture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as sa sfying as was the magi’s. It prays that the house be-yond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethle-hem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household cus-tom survived all efforts to erase Chris an customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradi on and the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

Epiphany of Our Lord “…the Gen les are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gos-pel.” (Ephesians 3:6)

Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He made us all one body with Him. We were all given different gi s; we all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Ask God how He wants you to use your gi s so that we may all “be one” in this Year of Mercy.

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

But, careful! Jesus does not say, Go off and do things on your own. No! That is not what he is saying. Jesus says, Go, for

I am with you! This is what is so beau ful for us; it is what guides us. If we go out to bring his Gospel with love, with a true apostolic spirit, with parrhesia, he walks with us, he goes ahead of us, and he gets there first. As we say in Spanish, nos primerea. By now you know what I mean by this. It is the same thing that the Bible tells us. In the Bible, the Lord says: I am like the flower of the al-mond. Why? Because that is the first flower to blossom in the spring. He is always the first! This is fundamental for us: God is always ahead of us! When we think about going far away, to an extreme outskirt, we may be a bit afraid, but in fact God is already there. Jesus is wai ng for us in the hearts of our brothers and sisters, in their wounded bodies, in their hardships, in their lack of faith. ― The Church of Mercy

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
