FROM THE PASTOR… Peace and all good!

You are part of a thriving parish - one of the biggest in North County - and I think the best! Over 3500 people come to Mass here each weekend. Last year, 22 marriages took place, 177 babies were bap-

zed, and 17 Quinceañeras and 89 funeral services were held. Our priests go on an average of 25 sick calls a month. The talents of our parishioners are evident every-where. For example, they shine through the voices of the 300 singers in our choirs, the volunteers who have been working to remodel Lore a House, the 20 members of our Bereavement Ministry. They show up in the compas-sion shown by the dozens of people who bring commun-ion to the sick and homebound. Pu ng their faith in ac on, people give of their me and talent in so many ways. Here are just a few more examples: We have over 120 Eucharis c Ministers. A team of 10 prepare the linens for Mass. 12 individuals sit on our Parish School Board. Over 2,000 par cipated in the Procession of the Saint

and the Mul cultural Sta ons of the Cross. 74 catechists prepare 735 children and youth for the

sacraments. 25 Volunteers run our twice weekly BINGO program. Over 1000 families and 500 individuals are helped

through our Social Concerns ministry each year.

And there are so many more ministries and examples of discipleship. For example, giving of our treasure. We are a generous parish. We collect over $1.3 million a year in regular collec ons. We give $75K to the Annual Catho-lic Appeal and $98K to special collec ons like Fr. Mar n’s mission in Guaymas, Mexico. Contribu ons come in weekly to the building fund. These monies run our day to day opera ons and have allowed us to make significant improvements around the Parish – new disabled parking, a new kitchen and wom-en’s restroom in St. Francis Hall and under construc on now, a new parking lot. S ll, to truly flourish, our collec ons need to increase. Today, our collec ons don’t cover our opera ng expens-es and they don’t fund our vision for a future that in-cludes, with the Mission and the Franciscan School of Theology, becoming North County’s premiere Center of Evangeliza on. That’s why our Finance Council has designated that each September will be devoted to Stewardship. We are called by Christ to be stewards. To keep our Parish the vibrant place it is and lead it into a stronger, brighter future, I ask each of us to reflect on our current level of contribu on and consider increasing it. During the month of September you will hear more about Stewardship and the important role your me, talent and treasure play in our Parish. May the Good Lord bless you, Fr. David Gaa, OFM

PASTORAL CENTER SPECIAL COMMUNICATION OF SEPTEMBER 3, 2014

Bishop Cirilo Flores of San Diego – his state of health.

We have learned through Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles that Bishop Flores has been diag-nosed with cancer of unknown origin, but it is mainly in his bones. The cancer is widespread, very advanced and very aggressive. Unfortunately, Bishop Flores is not a candidate for chemotherapy because of his very weak condi on and the advanced stage of the disease. On Friday, Bishop Flores has been moved from the hospital in Los Angeles to Nazareth House here, where he will have pallia ve care. While priests, deacons, religious and laity may wish to reach out to Bishop Flores during this diffi-cult me, it is in his best interest and be er for his care and well-being that we not try to contact Bishop Flores by phone nor a empt to visit him. Let us con nue to keep Bishop Flores in our prayers and ask the Lord to give him healing and peace.

AN APPRECIATION FOR ALL OUR MINISTERS AT THE PARISH

This Sunday, at the Pavilion at the back of the Old Mis-sion, we will have an apprecia on picnic for all our minis-ters at the parish from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. This gives us the opportunity to thank sincerely all who minister in our parish – those whom we see and those in the ‘back room” whom we do not see but who are vital to ministry in so many ways. The Faith Community at San Luis Rey is deeply grateful for your service, generosity and dedica-

on. This is our prayer for you:

Lord, we give thanks for our sisters and brothers who minister in our community.

As you washed the feet of your disciples you told us to imitate you and to be servants

of one another in love. Bless all who minister in our parish and may what they do in your name

build the Kingdom you came to establish among us. May they know your abiding love

and serve you in their sisters and brothers with that joy which only you can give. Amen.

God bless all our ministers, and have a wonderful a er-noon!

Come join in the fun and cele-brate St. Francis Day with us. The Parish will host a unique fundraiser on Sat., October 4th, that will con-sist of an Italian dinner with a

chance to hear from our very own friars here at San Luis Rey. We will have five friars tell us who they are, who they were, and give us a bit of the story of what lead them to become a Franciscan friar. These men come from all different background and have very interes ng stories. This is guaranteed to be an enjoyable evening. Tickets are on sale now at the Parish office, at www.sanluisreyparish.org or by contac ng Marta Wer-ner @ 760-533-7393 or Lee Bickford @ 760-522-2738. See you there!

8 | PARROQUIA MISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California — 7 de sep embre del 2014

MENSAJE DEL PÁRROCO... ¡Paz y bien!

Stewardship is a way of living as a disciple of Jesus Christ, acknowledging that God is the Creator and own-er of everything we are and everything we have. Our lives, our families, our work, our abili es, everything we have is a gi from God. We are stewards, caretakers of the many gi s God has given us. As Chris an stewards we recognize that all we are--all that we have—“all the me we are given--belongs to God, and we are accountable to Him for the use of that

me." Stewardship asks us to thank God for our many bless-ings by returning to God a por on of the many gi s that we have been given. Stewardship involves the inten onal, planned and pro-por onate giving of all we have, including our me and our talent. Finally, Stewardship encourages everyone to par ci-pate in the task of building the Kingdom of God. As Chris ans Stewards, we receive God’s gi s grate-fully, cul vate them responsibly, share them in love and jus ce with others; and stand before the Lord in a spirit of accountability.

“Men do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket. They set it on a stand where it gives light to all

in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts

and give praise to your heavenly father." (Ma hew 5:14-16)

The life of a Chris an steward models the life of Je-sus. It is challenging and even difficult, in many respects, yet intense joy comes to those who take the risk to live as Chris an stewards. Women and men who seek to live as stewards learn that. Good stewards become very conscious of living as dis-ciples of Jesus each moment of each day. Jesus made it clear in the scriptures that being stewards of all the gi s God has given us (like our me and talent) is part of the will of God.

Next week -- Life as a good steward is a balancing act…

¿Q C -R ?
