FROM OUR RABBI

My 8th grade English teacher, Mrs. McGrauther, had us memorize the famous opening paragraph from Charles Dickens’ novel, “A Tale of Two Cities”:

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom; it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity …

Dicken‘s age of radical opposites took place in a different era, but the words still ring true for us today.

In our post-COVID 19 world of Pandemic, we live within the times of extremes: Love and Hatred, Good and Evil, Light and Darkness, Freedom and Oppression, Hope and Despair, Wisdom and Folly……

But, whether it’s today, tomorrow, or yesterday, the Torah records that at all times: “God will place before us Life and Death, Blessings and Curses. And, we must Choose Life…”

And, this is what we do as individuals, families, and as a sacred community; we Choose Life!

Every weekend since the Pandemic began for us, I have been able to celebrate with a Temple Sholom household an appropriate Social Distancing Simcha, a joyous celebration amidst a sad and challenging time.

In a backyard shared on the computer with loved ones, amidst the sometimes added challenges of flickering screens and scrambled audio, we still can stream joy to be shared by all.

Our rough times of “social distancing” have made us find new ways to balance tradition and change. Virtual Worship Services, Distance Learning, Zoom, Phone, and the old fashioned handwritten note; anyway, we can continue to connect, we purse with even greater enthusiasm.

“Distant” is transformed into “Connection.” The losses are genuine: illness, death, economy, social ills…

But, we have found newly discovered blessings.

Reaching out more regularly to family and friends, spending extra time with our children who may have needed to come home during this crisis, expanding the presence of our loved ones at a virtual Seder…

At Temple Sholom, participation has significantly ticked up for the online virtual service offerings and classes. I feel more connected with our Congregational families because of regular contacts via social media, emails, and calls.

This new era of “Best of Times -- Worst of Times” has helped us rediscover the real value of our sacred Jewish Life, learning, and mutual support of our Jewish community.

We all want a return to “normal.”

Still, we should all hope to continue the ability to reach out and engage so many more people, by bringing Jewish living into our homes, by supporting one another with compassionate care, and by being fully present for one another as a family and a community of support.

May we be the bearers of God’s Divine Light, even as we travel through this darkened age; for a blessing and not for a curse.

Amen

-Rabbi Mitch

TITLEText

Dear Friends,

As I sit to write this arti cle – I am at a loss for something novel to say… This is not how I envisioned our Springti me nor the conclusion of my fi rst year as Temple Sholom’s president. What is striking to me at this ti me is an idea I came across recently:

We are all at sea within the same storm – we may be riding on diff erent sized or shaped vessels, but we are cast into these same rough seas together.

And together we must band. Not only for our own individual sakes, but for our community as well, and that is parti cularly true as it applies to Temple Sholom. Now more than ever, we need you and I believe, you need Temple Sholom too.

Temple Sholom for many of our congregants is a staple of their weekly lives – they pray, gather, learn, and connect here. For some congregants, they connect when their family has a lifecycle or milestone event that requires pastoral support. And for others, they enter the building twice a year for High Holiday services. No matt er how deep your connecti on to our shul is, I trust that there is comfort in knowing Temple Sholom is here for you.

Since the Covid Pandemic began, the Temple staff and clergy have been hard at work. They have ti relessly navigated the rough waters that this crisis has created. There are two signifi cant ways we have been impacted. Primarily: the restricti ons on gatherings and school closures meant we had to redesign how we connect with our community; how we conti nue to practi ce Jewish ritual, impart Jewish values and learn remotely. Secondarily: the fi nancial impact we are facing from Covid and what that means in the short and long term for our Shul.

With the uncertainty of the scope of impact that Covid will have, the Board of Trustees has had to make though ul decisions as

we go along, and someti mes predict probable outcomes without true knowledge of their accuracy. Currently, we are hoping to reopen the nursery school full day program in July. Based on that predicti on we can calculate our current lost revenue and we can begin to strategize how we close the gap Covid created in our budget.

This is what I ask of you all:

1) Please read the emails that come from the Board of Trustees, Eileen Robin, Rabbi Mitch and David Cohen as they will provide updates and perti nent informati on for decisions that have been made or will be made imminently.

2) Please att end the special meeti ngs that are called and the annual meeti ng on June 15. We will be presenti ng a Covid Budget in June to the congregati on which shows our current predicti ons on the impact the virus will have on our fi nances.

3) Please consider increasing your Kol Nidre gift this year and pledge that increased amount for a series of years so we can accurately count on what is coming in each Fall.

When ti mes are uncertain, we are called to join forces, not separate or isolate. We are stronger together. Please help us bring our community together by doing your part. Help us keep our community strong through connecti on and Tikkun Olam – the repairing of the world. Reach out to a fellow congregant to off er assistance, or just call to say to hello and make sure they are doing ok. When the Temple calls on you for support and assistance, please join us in keeping our Shul strong and vibrant because now more than ever, we need you, and we can be here for you as long as you help us to do so.

With love and grati tude,

Alexandra Hochman

WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT?Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved.
