Every year your Student Association, in collaboration with UTS and ABC,

organises a full week of activities and events for Green Week to celebrate World Environment Day and raise awareness of important sustainability issues.

We absolutely loved the entries for this year’s Green Week Photo Competition. There were so many high-quality photos it made choosing the winners very difficult for our judges! See for yourself some of the beautiful photos our winners took. The winners are:

At this year's Green Week we also showcased the amazing student-run event There is No Planet B, focusing on the importance of environmental sustainability and living green. We had games, activities, prizes, arts and crafts, yummy sustainable food and market stalls. There was also live

music, a photo booth and games to play such as the garbage toss!

Our amazing events students also ran a very classy dinner at our Apprentice Restaurant, S.O.S. Sink or Swim – Environmental Dinner. A themed dinner to link in with this year’s World Environment Day theme “Raise your Voice not the Sea Level”, it included a delicious menu created by our student chefs, raffles, a silent auction, guest speaker and live music, and it had a great turn out. And we cannot forget the knitting group at our library!

If you weren’t lucky enough to catch our two popular films with a captivating message about the effects of consumerism on the environment and the benefits of shopping locally, you can watch Green at our library and Sourced on YouTube. Just look for the Youth Food Movement campaign.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is held every year by schools,

workplaces and friends to help fundraise for those affected by cancer and it’s a great opportunity to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food while helping the fight against cancer.

Your Student Association held their Biggest Morning Tea on 20 May and this year’s event went off with a bang! We had a fantastic turn out of students and staff and our wonderful student volunteers put everything they had into delivering a sterling event loved by all.

Everyone enjoyed the cupcakes, tea and other delicacies on offer. Some people went so far as to shout all of their friends a cupcake! The best-selling pastry was the delicious vanilla cream. Thank you to our dedicated bakery students for making and donating the pastries. Also, thank you

END WOMEN's cancer

to our music students, who put on a rousing show.

A big thank you goes to Banana Joes, who sponsored us with tea and coffee. All in all, it was a great and successful fundraiser. We raised $681.65 to go towards the Cancer Council. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed on the day.

This semester there are even more ways to get involved in fundraising for cancer research. Lilly Kerr is an enthusiastic fundraiser for The Weekend to End Women’s Cancer, a two-day celebration and 60km walk on the 8 - 9 November 2014 to remember those lives lost to breast or gynaecologic cancer, to celebrate the lives of survivors and to create hope for every woman’s future. experience begins with fundraising in the months leading up to the walk. All fundraised money will go the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a state-of-the-art research facility. In our interview with Lilly, she is excited to tell you about her experience building up to the charity event and her reasons for getting involved.

What made you decide to take part in The Weekend to End Women’s Cancer?

I decided to do the walk for women's cancer supporting the ‘Chris O'Brien Lifehouse’ after seeing the advert on TV. I have always wanted to do some sort of charity walk to help raise money and awareness, but was never sure which one to do. I sent on for an information pack on the walk just to see what it involved. I was so excited when I got the pack in the mail! At first, when I told everyone, they thought I was crazy to walk 60 kilometres through the city, in November, over two days. But, in no time, my brother James, his partner Kelsey and our cousin Jess have joined me on this journey. With cancer being a big issue in our family, we couldn't think of a better cause to raise money for. We called our group ‘Brusha's Brigade’ in memory of my late pop who passed in 2012 from cancer.

In what ways have you found people to be supportive of your participation in this event?

Well, at first no one really said much because they weren't sure what I had really meant when I messaged them all. But once I had personally talked to people they were completely understanding and supportive.

When I first walked into my nan's house after my mum had told her what I was doing she called me crazy! It was so funny. But she later topped that off by telling me how proud she is and that my pop would be so proud of us.

I messaged all my friends and old school teachers via Facebook. About 70% of them got back to me saying how I'm doing this for such a beautiful cause and they would love to help out and donate on my behalf. My local radio station c91.3 put up an article on their website about the walk to let my local community know what I'm doing! I also had an online health store, Skinny Me Tea, donate $500 on my behalf. I was so happy and excited that I let off a little squeal.

How has cancer affected your life?

This is a tough one. Cancer has affected my family in so many ways just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. My mum’s aunty (my nan's sister) was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in her 30's. She passed away not long after. We don't talk about her often at family dinners; it is still a very touchy spot with my nan. About 30 years later, when my nan's was in her 60's, she was diagnosed with breast cancer also. When this happened I was only about eight. All the adults kept it a secret from us kids because they didn't want us to worry or stress about losing our nan. They finally told us when she got the all clear. It was shocking news at first but we were all so happy that she was clear.

Although this is a walk for women's cancers, I am also doing this in memory of my beloved pop. Seeing

Page 9: Buzz ultimo issue 14

● ● 9

him struggling in ICU and cancer wards just left me speechless and full of tears. Every time we had to leave him to go home I couldn't help but cry. It was the worst time in my life. I hated saying goodbye. When he passed in March 2012 I was devastated. No amount of words could ever describe how heart broken and lost I was. I'm doing the walk to help other families—giving them

more comfort through the times that are the hardest. If raising this money can improve any sort of treatment or facilities people with cancer use, then I'm more than happy to say I’d do it a million times over!

Would you recommend The Weekend to End Women’s Cancer to people?

I couldn't think of anything better to recommend to people. It has been such an amazing experience so far and has been extremely inspiring. So many of my friends have come to me asking how they can join in and what sort of training is involved. Seeing all these people wanting to donate to me and make a different brings the

biggest and proudest smile to my face!

What have you learnt about yourself and/or your fellow supporters as a result of being a part of this wonderful event?

I have learnt that I can do so much more if I put my mind to it! By talking to people involved, and companies wanting to support me, it has brought me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to do better. I was so surprised when my family offered to walk with me, showing that no matter what life throws at us we can join together to help defeat it.

Would you do this again?

Of course! I would love to do it again. It has made me so proud of myself. I would sign up again in a heartbeat!

Do you have any advice for people who are thinking about joining the event as a participant?

Make sure you have comfy shoes. Ha ha, just be ready for some hard yakka and dedication. The feeling once you have raised some money is amazing. There is no greater joy in life than raising money to help people in need. The Walk for Women's Cancer supporting the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is, and will be, the most rewarding thing I have ever done!

Ahhh, tertiary study. It’s a wonderful time in your life. Generally, you’ve

either escaped the formal clutches of high school (having to wear uniforms, having to study subjects you don’t really care about, having to work within the social pecking order, etc) or you’re looking for a change in life (perhaps the old career path isn’t so attractive to walk down anymore, or maybe you’re getting back into working after a break). Or maybe you’re from overseas, exploring a whole new culture.

Whatever the case, it’s usually a great experience. Finally you can stop worrying about all the extraneous stuff and get on with the task at hand; you’re in the course that you want to be in, and you can just concentrate on learning and expanding your knowledge and skills.

THE JOB you'll have Think about the job you’ll have tomorrow, today.

But maybe there is more to consider than your educational experience. What about afterwards? Your course won’t last forever … and what then? Have you thought about what the next step is and how to get there?

For some of you, you’ll look to go onto further education but, for many of you, the next step is employment. Think you’ll just walk straight into the job of your dreams once you have that qualification in your hands? Don’t be so sure … while there’s no doubt the right qualifications make a huge difference to your employment opportunities, there’s a lot to be said for having had some previous work experience in the field you ultimately want to get into as well, no matter how limited that experience might be.

Employers are always going to look favourably on people who have actually done the job even if it’s only for a short time or in a very junior role. A lot of employers place a huge amount of value on previous work experience, sometimes more than in what pieces of paper you came away from your studies with. Some previous work history allows an

employer to feel comfortable that you have, at the very least, a basic understanding of how the workplace works and some basic ‘soft skills’ such as effective communication, a good work ethic, teamwork or the ability to solve problems in a real-world environment.

Part-time and casual roles or work placement as part of your course can all contribute to getting these skills and to making an employer more confident in you as a potential candidate. The Sydney TAFE Careers Connect service can put you in touch with a huge amount of employment opportunities, many which will fit around your studies, in a wide variety of industries. So maybe put down the text books for a second and think about what happens after. The employment experience you gain

now, no matter how small, could make all the difference to your chances of getting the job you’ve been doing all that study for, later. Register and login to our website to see all the fantastic opportunities we have and good luck with both your studies and your career!

This new release stars the incredible Scottish powerhouse James McAvoy (last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past) and the wonderful Jessica Chastainhen. It’s a simple premise: an examination of how a married couple in New York deals with an emotional, life-changing experience. Sounds like a cliché, right? Well, not really, because this is actually three different films following the same time period, but told from the differing perspectives of Him, Her and Them. The last film, Them, will be released first and then Him and Her will be released after. Sound confusing? Well, it might be, but think of it as time travelling to see what different people think and do in uncertain times.

THE best 6The 6 best classics and

new release films to see.

If we go back in time to the world of 2005, one film that really jumped off the screen was the wonderful Sin City. Now director Robert Rodriguez returns with, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The forward/backward disjointed narrative and deceptive noir-comic book look is worth the price of admission. Mickey Rourke reprises his role as Marv, while Rosario Dawson and Jessica Alba are also back. Throw in a little Josh Brolin and Michael Madsen and you can’t go wrong.

Not exactly a time-travel film as the title suggests, but Begin Again is a sweet romantic piece starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. When her boyfriend dumps her

for fame and fortune Gretta (Knightley) starts

singing in a local bar to earn money. A producer

(Ruffalo) is enchanted by her talent and the two form an instant

connection. Who knows, they just may be each other’s last chance to— begin again.

Can you believe it's 20 years since this Quentin Tarantino cult masterpiece hit our screens and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes? The wonderful circular narrative of this outstanding film, with powerhouse performances by John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis is certainly worth catching up with, and it is definitely (especially in one scene) a real adrenaline rush.

Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) finds a time travelling DeLorean car and gets trapped in 1955 where he has to help his father meet his mother—or else he’s history! This science fiction classic

spawned two sequels but the first is always the best fun to watch.

The ultimate time-travel film, Phil Connors (Bill Murray) plays a horrid weatherman, who goes to Punxsutawney to cover the annual Groundhog festival.

However something goes really wrong and now Phil is

reliving the same day—over and over again! A scream of a film

that will have you humming Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe song the rest of the week.

many achievements in her legal career. But the increase of women in the Australian Judiciary has come at the cost of senior women at the bar. Women still appear to be under-represented at the bar, accounting for only 10% of Australian barristers.

Looking back on the history of gender inequality in the legal profession it’s clear that we have moved in to a more equal and diverse workforce. This is evident in the increased percentage of female lawyers and judges making up the legal profession. Australian law schools estimate around 60% of law students are female, with women accounting for about 45% of all solicitors in NSW and in Victoria.

Magistrate Patricia O’Shane, who has recently retired from

the Australian Judiciary, was a NSW Local Court Magistrate, renowned for her controversial judgements and her role as an arbiter of justice.

O'Shane practised as a barrister with the Aboriginal Legal Service in central Australia and as a patient advocate at Rozelle Hospital before being appointed Head of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

She was the first Aboriginal female teacher in Queensland, the first Aboriginal person in the country to graduate in law, the first Aboriginal magistrate for the NSW Local Court in 1986, and the first woman to head a government department. Looking back on O’Shane’s career, she has received some scrutiny for several of her debatable judgements in criminal matters.

This should not, however, overshadow her work in providing justice for many offenders and her

There are some positive examples of moving towards equality between men and women in the workforce, evident in the increased number of female magistrates and judges in Australian Courts in the past 10 years. A recent report indicates that the Australian judiciary comprises of 340 female judges or 33.53% of the total number of judges. This is a significant increase from only 8.77% of female judges as recent as 18 years ago.

Women still have a long way to go, but the actions of influential women, such as Patricia O’Shane, have paved the way to a brighter future for women seeking success and equality in the legal profession.

Equal opportunity in education, employment, health and legal treatment should be freely available to everybody. If you have experienced discrimination, you can call the Sydney TAFE Legal Service for free advice on (02) 9217 5473 Monday to Thursday to make a free appointment with a solicitor.

Online Software Training

In the popular television series, Game of Thrones, the Stark family have a

saying: ‘Winter is coming’. It’s a saying used to remind them of the inevitable season ahead. It’s not a saying to scare them (the Starks are a rather brave bunch), but to remind them to prepare. Winter is survivable, even enjoyable, with the right preparations.

Career decision making can feel like ‘a winter coming’ at times. But, unlike Game of Thrones, our world is very different. Very rarely does one person have one job for their entire life and often people have several jobs in one lifetime. This means that we are all faced with decisions relating to our career at many points throughout our lives. A number of factors can influence our career development such as: where we live, what occupations our family and friends may have, the media and the social and political climate. We are also influenced by what individual qualities we have, including our

BE PREPARED

values, what skills we have, what we find interesting and what we're good at.

So what is the best way to prepare for the inevitable season of career decision making? The systems framework of career development (Patton & McMahon, 1999) suggests that we stop and think for a moment to consider our past in order to make decisions for our present and to influence our future.

Preparing for a career decision doesn’t mean that we must have all the answers. Rather, it’s about stopping every once and a while and asking ourselves some questions to better prepare us for our future. Career decisions, like Winter, will inevitably come and come often so, like the Starks, be prepared and make your future a winter wonderland.

COUNSELLING

Page 21: Buzz ultimo issue 14

We live in the past. We don’t mean to live in the past, but often we

feel as if we can’t help it. Our brains can’t organise time like we want them to. When it comes to fitness, we routinely find ourselves comparing our current state of health and physical fitness to that of ourselves in the past.

We comment on how much better shape we were in back in high school, or in a previous decade, at least. We continuously draw these unproductive and terrible comparisons under the guise of motivation, but all they do is create more self-doubt. Suddenly we accept age and the turning dials of time with little fight left in us.

The person we could be is right around the corner, waiting for us to take our next self-motivational gym selfie. The person we used to be is right behind us, tugging us back to the couch with impetuous childlike impatience and frustration.

MOVE forward

The truth is that it is not easy to move forward. Our past has a way of holding us back and preventing us from truly letting go of things we cannot change and taking charge of the things we can.

Fitness is about change and about striving to be a better you. Moving forward means finding the confidence through yourself and pushing to the next level. Moving forward means taking that first step and never —never— looking back. Welcome to the future.

The team at the Ultimo Fitness Centre will help you to achieve your goals and start moving forward with a personalised exercise program and weekly group classes.

Pinterest - single serving desserts you can make in the microwave! With this recipe you are no more than 5 minutes away from a delicious chocolate cake that takes very little brain power to assemble.

• You will need:1 microwave-safe mug1 microwave1 mixing tool (a small teaspoon would do)

• Ingredients:4 tsp flour4 tsp sugar2 tsp cocoa3 tsp milk3 tsp oil1 eggSmall splash of good vanillaVanilla ice-cream (quantity of your choice!)

• Add all of your dry ingredients together in the mug. When mixed, add the beaten egg and mix it through.

• Pour your milk and oil and vanilla

in and mix through.• Pop the mug in the microwave

and press high for a two minute cooking time.

• Eat with a side of your choice. (I prefer a good quality vanilla bean ice-cream, but the mug cup is delicious even by itself).

Tip: don’t worry about the cake rising slightly over the top of the cup—this is normal (and delicious)! Also, experiment with your microwave for the best cooking time. Enjoy!
