HENLEY MARDI GRAS - 2013

Our next Henley-on-Klip Mardi Gras will be held on Saturday, 26 October

from 11h00 until 18h00 at Fraser Park.

This is a special day on the Henley-on-Klip calendar and an event to instil our special sense of community.

Diarise now. You don't want to miss this.

25 September is the date for the HRRA Annual General Meeting. After two years the present committee is stepping down and a new committee must be voted in. Everyone is encouraged to join as new people will undoubtedly offer ideas and different perspectives and opinions. At times, over the last few years, we have felt that our efforts have not been very successful. However, at our last committee meeting we went through all our projects and were pleased that a few matters have been dealt with satisfactorily. For instance park benches have been placed around Henley, the cost being shared equally between the HRRA and Council. A considerable amount of paving has been done to channel water down to the river. Unfortunately most other blocked drains specified in written requests, and circulated to various members of the Council, have not been attended to and no one seems to know what we are talking about when we try to follow up. A pipe was placed under Eaton Road which is successfully channeling storm water down from the Suikerboschrand towards the river. However, the remaining section from Gibson Road to the Bowling Club has not received any attention and is still a problem. Because we are in a DA Municipality it seems to be assumed that this HRRA committee is a DA committee. This is not the case and we have ensured that we remain apolitical. We do not know what political leanings our fellow committee members have. Our meetings are to get together to discuss Henley on Klip matters and what needs attention, whether we can make any difference and if so how to get things done. Most of the problems we have been dealing with had to be referred to MLM for attention, but that's not just because it is a DA Municipality. The municipalities of Midvaal and Emfuleni being combined to form a metro is a dismal prospect indeed. Residents are asked to send in written objections about this situation which we, as residents and ratepayers, seem to have no say in. Just driving through Vereen-iging, along the pot-holed roads and seeing litter everywhere, is depressing and we really do have cause for gloom. We may feel that we are being picked on over this amalgamation and that other muni-cipalities are getting a better deal such as Lesedi (Heidelberg and surrounds) which will become part of Ekurhuleni. However recently the Sunday Times carried a full page of municipalities that are being re-demarcated and there are hundreds throughout the country - the two provinces most affected seem to be Kwazulu Natal and North West.

– Nancy EagarChairman

At a special council meeting held on 29 August, Councillor Bongani Baloyi was voted in as the new Executive Mayor of Midvaal. The young resident of Kookrus is the perfect candidate to take over the task of growing and developing Midvaal Local Municipality. Formerly the MMC for Development and Planning,

Baloyi was instrumental in leading his team to achieve significant successes such as the first-ever collaborative initiative to count and record the residents of Sicelo, the ongoing food garden projects in Midvaal and the establishment of the Bantu-Bonke agricultural cooperative, amongst many others. Having served on the council for two years, Cllr Baloyi is con-fident that he will rise to the task of leading and serving Midvaal. “Residents can rest assured that stability and continuity will be maintained through the transition to a new Mayor, and there will be no disruptions to the daily functioning of Midvaal. Midvaal Local Municipality has always been dedicated to excellent service de-livery, economic growth and development in the area. These stan-dards will not change: As the new mayor, I am committed to up-holding these values of Midvaal, to driving business development, as well as entrenching the need for inclusive economic growth, which allows our poor communities like Sicelo and Lakeside to progress along with businesses and investors. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind as Midvaal expands its economy,” said Baloyi. He explained that his focus areas as mayor would include driving economic growth, reaching out to the youth of Midvaal, celebrating diversity, building integrated communities and increased interaction with residents. In the coming months, the mayor plans to embark on a road show around Midvaal, meeting with different sectors and communities to engage with them and to demonstrate his commitment to continuing the Midvaal custom of an open and accessible relation-ship between the mayor and residents. The Municipality looks forward to the guidance of this new leader as they continue with their daily mandate of serving Midvaal. The new Mayoral Com-mittee which was selected by Mayor Baloyi comprises the following councillors: MMC Engineering and Deputy Mayor - Cllr Malcolm Hack, MMC Social and Community Services - Cllr Cliff Hartman, MMC Corporate and Finance - Cllr Patricia Pretorius, MMC HR & Protection - Cllr James Botsoere, MMC Development and Planning - Cllr Freddie Peters.

Councillor's CornerThe campaign for Election 2014 has already started to heat up with the ANC firing the first salvos. The first registration weekend will be on 09 and 10 November and the IEC will be at the O'Connor Hall. With the IEC yet to confirm a second registration weekend, 9 and 10 November represent one of the few opportunities to max-imise the registration of incorrectly registered and unregistered DA supporters across the country. The DA is aiming for our biggest GOTR (Get Out To Register) drive ever. Accordingly, it is essential that we aim to identify as many incorrectly and unregistered DA supporters across the country. Ward 4 has already started their campaign. We have a very active branch committee and you may have seen our table at the Night Market at the Shed. There was a

Residents of Henley have joined forces in the fight against the ever increasing incidents of crime plaguing the area. An information morning, hosted by Henley Community Crime Forum, was held recently at the Bowling Club. The talk included a lot of information that was new to most of the attendees: Preserving the scene of a crime is vitally important as destroyed evidence and clues hampers police investigations. You should not handle anything on the scene of a crime or touch doors and windows as this could destroy finger-prints. Also you should not walk around the area as footprints could be destroyed. Another point explained the importance of keeping records of suspicious vehicles (including the registration number) or activity. This can be done using your cell phone. All attendees were urged to display their street numbers clearly so that patrollers or the police can f i n d t h e m f a s t i n a n emergency. Here Bob Marks i s seen address ing the audience with Danie Mohr next to him.

Henley residents to hit back hard

Bongani Michael Baloyi, the eldest of three was born in Thokoza but did his schooling at Hoerskool Drie Riviere and is still studying for a B.Comm in Business Administration. He is a resident of Kookrus. His mother was very involved in politics so he was always attending meetings with her and this is where his interest in politics began and grew. His message to Midvalers is that it is business as usual. There will be no huge disruptions to the way things work in Midvaal, and

he would like to guarantee residents that stability and continuity will be maintained. MLM is renowned for excellent service delivery levels, and these will be maintained and improved moving forward. They are fighting the MDB proposal for a merger, and they will use every recourse available to challenge it. They are optimistic that the outcome will be in Midvaal's favour. He will focus on building integrated communities within Midvaal, as well as driving the need for inclusive economic growth, which allows poor communities like Sicelo and Lakeside to pro-gress along with businesses and investors. He says we cannot af-

ford to leave anyone beh ind as Midvaa l expands its economy. They must attract more businesses to invest in the area, as this will create the employment opportunities which they are seeking. The c r e a t i o n o f entrepreneurs is already being implemented through skills training and workshops. He feels development can be im-proved by reducing red tape, by decreasing the waiting times on land-use applications, and p o s s i b l y t h e

introduction of incentives to encourage investment in the area. He plans to continue the partnership with the MYDF and the Oliphant Institute of Leadership for the next three years, which focuses on technical skills.

After a little back step of icy weather, spring is definitely here and with it renewed energy. Everywhere there is building, watering, trimming, planting, painting, cleaning and fixing taking place. This should boost business, too. We hope it tran-slates into everyone working just a little bit harder; into workers delivering at their jobs a bit more

efficiently and pleasantly, making their customers that little bit more satisfied. All those little bits could add up to a wave of change for good. We can dream! This issue is full of good news and of events which will be hap-pening around us. We urge all readers to get involved: participate, support, get out and meet the village people. Fans of Eric Conradie, be advised that he will be back next issue.

great atmosphere and it was very gratifying to see such enthusiasm for registration and for the Demarcation Battle. Our caucus has a firm belief that the Demarcation battle is one that we can win. On Thursday, 16 October the first IDP (Integrated Development Plan) meeting for Ward 4 for the next financial year will be held at the O'Connor Hall at 18:00. This is the meeting where the community has the opportunity to identify their priorities for the ward. They are then taken back to council and put into a draft integrated plan for the municipality. The draft plan will then be presented at another public meeting where the community has a platform to give feedback. I urge everybody to attend these meetings so that the priorities identified are truly the priorities of the community. Finally, it was a pleasure for me to be able to propose the nomination of Councillor Bongani Baloyi for mayor, at the last council meeting. His nomination was unanimously endorsed by the DA councillors and was well deserved. Our little municipality has made its mark on history yet again by electing the first black DA mayor. For information on public meetings etc follow me on twitter, my handle is @CouncillorWard4

Peter Tunstall was the first chairman of Henley Watch with a drive and enthusiasm that no subsequent chairman, or lady for that matter, has been able to emulate. He would never ask anybody to do anything that he was not prepared to do himself. The dreaded words, “This would never have happened in Tunstall's time,” has haunted every chairman since Peter's retirement and I dare say it will carry on for as long as Henley Watch is in existence. Any member who stepped out of line or disobeyed the rules felt his wrath, which is an experience never to be forgotten. Equally he was very quick to praise those that showed initiative or went the extra mile. When being called into action by Peter one always expected to hear him shout down the radio “Tally-ho chaps bandits at 10 o'clock”. Peter has left a legacy in Henley which we should all strive to keep alive.

A Legend of Henley Watch.

Another year has passed and we're all a little older.Last summer felt hotter and winter seems much colder. There was a time not long ago when life was quite a blast. Now I fully understand about 'Living in the Past' We used to go to weddings, football games and lunches. Now we go to funeral homes, and after-funeral brunches. We used to have hangovers, from parties that were gay. Now we suffer body aches and wile the night away.We used to go out dining, and couldn't get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, come home and take a pill.We used to often travel to places near and far.Now we get sore asses from riding in the car.We used to go to nightclubs and drink a little booze. Now we stay home at night and watch the evening news. That, my friend is how life is, and now my tale is told. So, enjoy each day and live it up, before you're too damned old!

“You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old.” George Burnes

Entrepreneurs with a cause

Billy and Pinky Modisang of Rugby Road know Henley intimately. They are Klip Valley Recyclers and they collect the paper and plastic from your pavement every Thursday.

At the moment nearly half the houses in Henley regularly put out a white bag of paper and c a r d b o a r d a n d a t r a n s p a r e n t b a g o f plastic together with the black bag of garbage that is collected by MLM. They would like it to be every household. However the work they do here is more of a public service as they make very little money out of it. Their main business is managing the waste of several companies. Aloe R i d g e S c h o o l a n d Walkerville Hardware are particularly good at recycling. Other loyal

customers are Nature's Choice, Jet, Spar, Lynca Meats and Clicks. Flexilube, the company that sponsored the playground at the Oval, has adopted them as their social responsibility project and is also a good customer. Their partner, Joy Kirsten, is involved in finding new customers and she assists with the books. Pinky wants to encourage all businesses and schools to contact her so that she can discuss their recycling needs. They are grateful to Council for its support particularly in referring businesses to them. There are also sponsors eager to donate machinery such as a baling machine but they cannot accept this yet as the premises they hope to lease at the dump are not available yet. At present they operate from a plot at De Deur.

They also empty the glass banks in Henley and Risiville. For those who are still not aware of these banks in Henley, they are at Fraser Park (also bins for tins), Vasco's Corner, Total Garage, the library (also bins for tins) and Henley Arms. Knowing how difficult it is to make a living, she is ambivalent

about the people who are stealing the plastic placed in transparent bags. She says there are several bakkies arriving in Henley from Orange Farm every Thursday knowing that there is ready sorted plastic for the taking on the pavements. There is little that they can do about it except try to get there before the opposition. She is also thinking that plastic should also be placed in the same type of bag as the paper, which they are not stealing. She emphasises that the paper should be clean: Used Pampers go in the black bags! She was very excited by the Henley at Heart clean up. All the rubbish collected was dumped at her house for sorting and by the end of Saturday it had all been dealt with. She says many of the residents near her are now eager to participate next time. She believes we will need regular clean up days in the future. Billy was a nurse and Pinky a policewoman so they do not have many business skills. They are learning these skills and being mentored through Edge Growth. This training is sponsored by ABI. They know that enthusiasm is not sufficient to run a successful business. They are learning a lot about accounting, finance and marketing. They urge other entrepreneurs not to be put off, but to investigate all avenues because there are many organizations where help can be found.

11 November is Poppy Day but not everybody knows the meaning or the origin of this day. Some think of it as some English nonsense. On this day in 1918 at 11h00 the armistice was signed between Germany and England and her allies, France and USA, which ended the Great War (later called World War I) the like of which the world had never seen before, in which millions of lives were lost on both sides and hundreds of thousands maimed and disabled. By 1919, as the anniversary of the signing approached, the emblem which would commemorate the appalling loss of life in the allied armies was approved: It was the Flanders Poppy. This plant has flowered for centuries on the blood-soaked battlefields of Europe and it was seen during the Great War flowering in patches among the shell holes, in no mans land and on the trenches of both sides, thus a flower familiar to the veterans. In Britain it was agreed that the manufacture of the poppies would be done by elderly or disabled veterans and that the proceeds would be devoted to the care and upkeep of these veterans. That mandate is still in place today. South Africa has a proud record in all these conflicts. The Battle of Delville Wood in July 1916 in which 1st Infantry Battalion suffered 2536 casualties, of which 766 were deaths, out of a total of 3155 officers and men, saved the French and British armies from a serious defeat. In World War II South African forces played a significant role in the Abyssinian, desert and Italian campaigns with a total of 14,750 of all races killed in action. In the Korean War, 34

SA pilots died. There have been many smaller conflicts since then: The border war and various African peace keeping duties have taken their toll. Anyone killed in action is included in the Roll of Honour. Armistice Day/Poppy day is now known as Remembrance Day to include all wars. When you wear a poppy you can wear it with pride as you honour and remember all those who died to keep this country safe. The donation you make will help to make the lives of the elderly and disabled veterans happy and normal.

– Bill Nobile MOTH

Just over 5 years ago, Rob Clark told me about a Prokart event that they did to raise funds for charity and that they would like us to be the beneficiary of the race. I met with Patsy and Rob and quickly learnt a lot about a sport I'd hardly heard of. That first year we raised over R30,000 which enabled us to install palisade fencing and electric gate and intercom. Every year since we have spent the money on a project that was sorely needed. There is not another race on the karting calendar that can hold a candle to the 12 Hour. This is a test of pilot and machine, preparation and maintenance. It is a test of strength, determination, preparation, sleep deprivation and luck. There is something special about a night race. And the proceeds go to a worthwhile charity. The event takes place in November and there is still time to sponsor a team. – Gail Heasley

We recently spend a pleasant afternoon at the Transport Museum in Sylviavale. For Henleyites whose appetites for things from ages past has been whetted by the Henley Museum, as well as all other readers with an interest in history there is a fascinating museum at the western end of Vanderbijl near Stonehaven.

The Sylviavale Heritage Museum is a work in progress but there are three halls which are filled with interesting memorabilia. The emphasis is on transport featuring working steam engines, tractors and motorbikes as well as classic cars but there are also displays arranged as if in a shop or office of yesteryear. There is a stagecoach era pub and an old fashioned tea room. The first Sunday of the month is the best time to see the steam engines in actionIt is not signposted so note the address: 14 Vaal Dr. Sylviavale or set your GPS to take you to S26° 44' 07.17" / E27° 49' 09.76"

Henley High Cultural Trip to Thailand

From the emerald Buddha to the emerald lake, from golden palaces to palaces of shopping, from floating markets to snorkelling in the South China Seas, from kayaks to high speed catamarans, from wonderful beaches to high rise buildings, the Henley High Cultural Trip to Thailand had it all. The food was different, the way of life was different and the toilets were very different but the 17 learners and 5 teachers came back with a basketful of wonderful experiences and lasting memories (and bags full of souvenirs and shopping). – Lynda Parsonson

Some hefty speed fines drove Norma Gove to action. Here she is eliciting suppor t to oppose the 40km/h speed limit which was imposed on Mimosa road in Golf Park without notification. Some of the s igns have s ince been covered up and the traffic department is rethinking the issue.

A system developed by the late Col. Jeff Cooper USMC for combat soldiers in the field is applicable to us in South Africa. It teaches an individual to always maintain a low

key state of awareness. Watch your pet cat or dog as he wanders around seemingly totally at ease, but still fully aware of what is going on around him. Ears swivel back and forth and any strange occurrence has his immediate attention. Now, compare this to yourself sitting in front of your TV en-grossed in your favorite show, or driving home in your car from work, listening to your favorite CD. How alert would you say you are? No wonder you did not see the hijacker until he thrust his gun in your face, or the robber until he stopped behind you in your drive-way. Research has shown that the average driver cannot remember a single detail of the regular trip home a few hours later. This is what we call Condition White. Your guard is down, your attention fo-cused somewhere else, and you are in no condition to notice any threat. You should never be in this state anywhere, except possibly while asleep, which is exactly what the K53 driver training test aims to do.

Condition Yellow is a relaxed state of awareness tha t can be mainta ined indefinitely once you are used to it. You are relaxed but awake and your mind is in a search mode, taking in and evaluating its surroundings. There is no immediate threat or obvious danger but you are aware that it can happen and are looking out for its potential presence. You maintain a 360 degree surveillance and know what is in front, behind and to your sides. Remember your cat and the K53?

This should become the waking mindset to strive for and once you are aware of it, it easily becomes a habit. A good idea is to place yellow dots in conspicuous places to remind you to remain in con-dition yellow. It is quite possible to watch a TV show and still re-gister strange sounds outside. When combat soldiers are out on patrol this is the state they will be in. The effect of condition yellow is that you look around you as you approach your home and check on who is behind you and for how long. You will sense the intent of your pursuer and act accordingly. You will notice the strangers in the proximity of your gate and act accordingly. When you enter your premises you will be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary such as the family dogs not rushing out

to greet you or a door slightly ajar. When approaching a traffic light you will notice the individuals with the heavy looking plastic bags or the baggy clothing. They actually radiate ill intentions which you will be able to pick up quite clearly after a little practice, even without any moves of any kind having been made. Humans have a pretty well developed sixth sense in such scenarios, provided they are alert and watchful. After a period of deliberate practice Condition Yellow becomes a way of life which will not intrude on your daily activities and will be maintained subconsciously.

Condition Orange is the state you move into when a threat has been spotted. You now focus upon it strongly and prepare to counter move. This condition is tiring and cannot be maintained indefinitely due to the strain brought about by intense con-centration. At this point the fight or flight decision needs to be made. No hesitation after this juncture. Condition Red is when the fight decision has been taken and danger is clear and recognizable. You are mentally and physically prepared for it and your counter moves are in place. There will be no surprise here and the assailant's chances of success have just been reduced dramatically. By mastering the color code you will be able to greatly reduce the chances of being surprised. So go out and practice, starting with your car and stick a yellow dot on the dashboard to remind you.

My resignation from MidvaalBy the time this letter is published most of the dust around my resignation will have settled. However I would like to offer a brief explanation. It seems strange that a young person with a potentially bright future in politics would want to resign as the mayor of a municipality. I was elected as a councillor twelve and a half years ago and during that time Midvaal and my various roles fully domi-nated my life – as it should when you commit to holding a public office. When I became mayor in 2009, I saw my role as leading the election campaign of 2011 and surviving the various storms and controversies that came with it. Following my re-election I made it clear to the local councillors, and anyone else who asked, that I would not complete my term. People simply assumed that I would be elected to Parliament in 2014. However that is not an option at this stage in my life and I have always been honest about it. The age of 31 is a perfect time for a career and life change. I spent many months considering my future and eventually decided that it was time to learn new things from different people and, impor-tantly, to begin to build a stable family life. Unfortunately there will never be a perfect time to resign from such a position. If I had left a few months later people would have said that it was because of the elections. If it were a few months earlier it would have been because of the Public Protector's report. A life in politics means dealing with a continuous string of crises. There will always be rumours about why I resigned but, as always, I test my decisions against my own conscience. The opportunity to form part of a team that is planning the future of Africa's economic powerhouse was too exciting to resist!Being a councillor, and especially a mayor, is an incredible privi-lege and this is amplified when one enjoys the continuous support, goodwill, prayers, advice and thoughts of so many people. I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to have represented and served you and trust that the new mayor will enjoy the same levels of support and encouragement as I did.Yours sincerelyTimothy Nast

Many Henley residents will have been saddened on hearing of the death in Knysna of Pete Tunstall on 27 July. He was 94. After arriving in Henley in 1970 with his wife Ann and their two small sons Andrew and Mark, he pursued many activities: nature conservation, amateur and professional acting, civic af-fairs and even some airmanship. But I am sure he will be best remembered as the founder, in 1990, of Henley Watch and thereafter until his retirement in 1997 to Knysna, his person-ification of the Watch as its Chairman and Chief of Operations. With paramilitary discipline he inspired most members to perform their duties in crime prevention with dedication and responsibility. It has always surprised me that he met with some recalcitrance because of personality differences and this had to be dealt with in his usual forthright way. It was through my association with him in Henley Watch that I got to know and appreciate his qualities as one of the boys and to enthuse over some of his well documented activities as a prisoner of war for a period of four years. Yes, I have lost a true friend.

Reactions to the Clean-up on 24 August

Paula Cimardi writes “What a pleasure it is to live in the village where so many care about the environment and each other. I just wish that a few more would care and not litter as much as they do. I was disappointed to see the street that I cleaned full of litter the very next day. I know that the wind can blow litter around but a big pizza box does not fly on its own. Please consider the environment and take pride in your village.

Ilse Spies writes “On Saturday I once again realised that Henleyites are super special people! We did the food, so for all practical reasons

had to wait while the participants earned their boerie rolls in the hot sun. Driving through town gave me an immense sense of 'proudly Henley'. Sixty people - men, women and children, sacrificed their Saturday sweeping the streets and picking up rubbish. Some trimmed untidy trees near the Post Office. One family even pruned the roses in Mitchell bank. Hats off to Henley at Heart for taking the initiative and organising the event. May this be the first of many Saturdays.

Merlyn Ralph writes, “I felt so chuffed after our clean-up stint on Saturday. Henley looked clean and neat as I drove home tired but very happy. We won't talk about the stiff muscles though, but it was well worth it!

Lesley Fidrmuc writes: 'Twas so great to experience the support for this initiative and proud to be part of trying to bring awareness to those who just don't, or refuse to, know how to behave. Lead by example. It has to pay off ultimately! I look forward to being an on-going example.

NEW THINKING. NEW POSSIBILITIES

On 10 August the Tour de Walkerville once again hosted another successful Walkerville Treasure Hunt. This is to raise funds towards next year's 1 May TdeW charity walk. “Solve for "x":3800g+19days=HRHPxOC.” “Turn left on R82, move into the right lane. Take the second road to your right. Turn right onto a dirt road. Stop your vehicle immediately and look for a concrete slab. Ask your tallest “towering” player to stand on the concrete slab and face in the direction of Kim Kardshian and Kanye West's newborn daughter. What is the furthest thing you can see? “ These are just two of the tricky 62 questions which had to be solved by the treasure hunters, aged between 5 and 75. Driving around the village to ten different venues, competing in various tasks like shooting apples off their team mate's head with a bow and arrow, making pancakes, and hitting soccer balls through rugby posts with a cricket bat, our intrepid teams raised just over three thousand rand for the TdW's 17 charities. Country Living Estates, Yellowleys, Country Kitchen at the Showgounds, Chilli Thyme, Bene Natural Spring Water and other local companies sponsored the event. First prize was a weekend getaway for two including meals at Elaine and Martin Potgieter's Kestell Hotel in the beautiful southern Free State. The Tedderfield Airpark's Gordon Howell offered a flight over Walkerville for the runners up. One of the more popular venues, the Walkerville Farmers' Market, went above and beyond the call of duty by sponsoring a prize from their stall holders for each team that participated! Every team got the following question right: "7. Will you buy a can of pilchards for The Adonai Feeding Scheme, one of the TdW beneficiaries? Please. (Hint: only YES is an acceptable answer. Bring proof to the end.)" It was a wonderful family day out, and by popular demand, a Christmas themed Treasure Hunt will be held on 7 December. ([email protected] for bookings) The answers for the questions at the head of this article were "George" and "The Sun". No one answered the latter correctly.

You do not need to have arms and legs made of rubber bands to do yoga. Nor do you need to be born without a spine. Here are a few easy yoga poses that you can do to get some of the wonderful benefits that come with practising this 5,000 year old art.Cobra Pose: Lie face down on the floor with your palms flat beneath your shoulders. Spread your fingers and press your palms into the floor. Keep your shoulders back and down away from your ears. Next push your upper body away from the floor while keeping your hips and legs on the ground, looking up to the ceiling. Hold for 3 deep breaths.Benefits: Stretches the muscles in your shoulders, chest and abdominals, decreases stiffness in the lower back, strengthens arms wrists and shoulders, firms buttocks and relieves fatigue.Warrior Pose: From a standing position with your legs wide apart, turn your right foot out to 90 degrees. Slightly turn your left foot in a bit. Bring your arms up, one in front and one behind you, keeping the shoulders relaxed. Bend the knee of your leading leg (right leg), making sure your knee doesn't go over your toes. (If it does, just widen your stance.) Hold for 3 slow deep breaths. 14 September, a busy day on the river.

The much loved regatta run by Henley High returns after an absence of several years. On 14 September a variety of crazy craft will be launched from Dinsdale road (Start 9.00) and, probably under a hail of eggs and other missiles, will attempt to stay afloat until the scout hall. From 12.00 there will be the prize giving at Twin Rivers Estate (Entrance R10 in aid of Hospice). On the same day Twin Rivers hosts the keenly awaited Dragon Boat Races. There are also lots of stalls selling food and crafts, musical and children's entertainment

on't miss the Dragon Boat Race and Festival on 14 DSeptember The venue is Twin River Family Estate at the end of Hearn rd in Henley.

For directions visit their website on ,www.trfe.co.za or use the following GPS Coordinates

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, and I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

Vereeniging Photographic Club'sannual competition evening a great success

This year, there was a record entry of 390 images from 43 members. The judges, Koos Fourie, Henk Scheepers and Louisa Scheepers came from neighbouring Vanderbijlpark Club. The evening took the form of a social at their usual venue, Klipriver Country Estate, where the images were scrolled at random on a screen, while we socialised. It was a cold night and we were refreshed by a delicious hot soup and wine. Prizes were awarded in the following categories: Wildlife including Birds to Francois Roux for Catch, Landscapes including

Cityscapes and Seascapes to Francois Oosthuysen for Paris, Photojournalism including Sport to Karen le Roux for Snoek, Pictorial including Portraits to Stan Loam for Abandoned, Monochrome to Petro Bosman for Jungfraujoch, Best Senior
