Why I chose John Graham

• I chose John Graham because he is an interesting Jacobite character

• I also chose him because he was the first proper Jacobite commander

Early Life• John Graham, Viscount Dundee, was

born in 1648 in his fathers’ private estate Claverhouse near Dundee

• He was the elder son of Sir William Graham and Lady Madeline Carnegie. John Graham also had one brother and two sisters

• He was also descendent of King Robert III

• He was a student at St Andrews University in 1665 with his younger brother

Start of Military Career• Four years later John Graham travelled France as a military volunteer

• In c.1674 he went to the Netherlands and was promoted to Captain after saving the Dutch Prince

• In 1677 he returned to Britain. John Graham was now a lieutenant and had to suppress the Covenanters under Marquis of Montrose

Battle of Bothwell Brig

• On June 22nd 1679 John Graham fought at the Battle of Bothwell Brig in Lanarkshire for the Royal Army

• The Royal army was commanded by Duke of Monmouth, son of Charles II. The Covenanters were commanded Robert Hamilton

• The Government troops won the battle of Bothwell Brig

Marriage and Promotion

• In 1684 John Graham married Lady Jean Cochrane, daughter of a feisty Covenanter family

• In 1686 he was promoted to Major General and Provost of Dundee

• In 1688 he was promoted to Viscount Dundee by King James II and VII

Support of the Stuarts

• Viscount Dundee was a strong supporter of the Stuarts

• When James II and VII was exiled and William of Orange was installed as king, John Graham opposed this and set about raising a Jacobite Army

Build up to Battle of Killiecrankie• John Graham and his army set off to Blair

Castle they headed from the north

• Blair Castle controlled the Pass of Killiecrankie

• The Government, led by General Hugh Mackay headed through the narrow Pass of Killiecrankie to Blair Castle

• This was where Dundee planned to fight them

• When the Government soldiers entered the Pass a brave Jacobite shot the Government Calvary officer

Battle of Killiecrankie• When the Government troops reached the northern end

of the Pass of Killiecrankie, the Jacobites charged down the hill where the trees stopped on the July 27, 1689

• The Highlanders fired their single shot muskets then proceeded to use their broadswords to hack at the Government soldiers who were srewing on their bayonets. The Government soldiers were also ill trained

• The Jacobites won the battle in a few minutes. The Government troops fled, 2000 killed or captured

• General Mackay just managed to escape

Dundee’s Death

• Bonnie Dundee was shot under the armpit as he raised his targe at the end of the battle of Killiecrankie

• Some even say he was shot by his own man, the bullet deflecting off something

• He died as a result of the wound on the same day, July 27th 1689, at Blair Castle

Aftermath of Killiecrankie

• A few months the later the Jacobites were defeated at Dunkeld

• John Graham of Claverhouse was named ‘Bonnie Dundee’ or ‘Bonny Dundee’ a few years after the battle of Killiecrankie

• He is also called ‘Bluidy Clavers’ for his ruthlessness to the Covenanters

Viscounts Dundee’s affect on Our Society Today

• Bonnie Dundee was the first Jacobite General

• Bonnie Dundee showed that you can rise up against a Government and win

Why is Bonnie Dundee Famous ?

• Bonnie Dundee is famous because he was the first Jacobite commander

• And he led the first Jacobite rebellion
