Drilling Control Systems

The subsea MUX electro-hydraulic BOP control system from CameronControls offers state-of-the-art controls for Cameron BOP systems.

Each system is designed with a true systems approach for maximumefficiency. The modular structure of the system allows Cameron Controlsto look at each drilling program from a total systems level, not just froman equipment level. Only Cameron Controls combines this approach withthe full technical and project management resources of the Cameronorganization, offering customers:• Subsea retrievability – Unlike any other system in the industry, the

modular design of the Cameron Controls system allows the subseacontrol pod to be retrieved and replaced without pulling the riser stack.

• Redundant system architecture – Component level redundancyeliminates single point failures. All critical system functions have beenengineered with multiple back-ups for continuous operations.

• Robust components – Subsea components are designed for a waterdepth of 12,000 ft (3700 m), and certified for 10,000 ft (3000 m).

• Smaller and lighter – Cameron Controls subsea MUX drilling controlsystems are the smallest and lightest in the industry.

• Functionality – Cameron Controls MUX systems provide up to 112hydraulic functions per subsea control pod.

Key components of the Cameron MUX drilling control system include:

Control PanelsCameron Controls subsea MUX drilling control systems provide twofunctionally identical control panels for both the driller and tool pusher.Either panel is available as touchscreen interfaces. Both panels arecapable of full, independent control of the subsea drilling system.

UninterruptiblePower Supplies (UPS)Dual redundant UPSs are standard onCameron Controls subsea MUXdrilling control systems. Each UPS iscapable of providing power to theelectronic control system for aminimum of two hours.

Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)The HPU provides pressurized hydraulic fluid to operate the subsea BOPstack and Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) functions. The HPU iscomprised of three skid units whichseparately house the Hydraulic PumpUnit, Diverter Control Unit and FluidMixing Unit. The HPU includes a PLCunit, which provides a third level ofredundancy for the control panels.

The Hydraulic Pump Unit istypically equipped with three pumpsystems with independent, dedicatedpower sources, supplying pressure tothe subsea components. The DiverterControl Unit controls a seriesof valves which divert drillingfluid into or away from theriser. In addition to the maincontrol panels, the DCU alsoprovides a tertiary means ofcontrolling drilling systemfunctions. The Fluid MixingUnit mixes glycol, solublelubricant and water to aprespecified formulation tosuit specific depth andtemperature requirements.

SurfaceAccumulator RacksSurface Accumulator Racks are tied to the DCU, and are used to storepressurized hydraulic fluid for controlling BOP and LMRP functions.

Piston, float and bladderaccumulators are available.

Drilling Control Systems

Electrical Distribution Units (EDU)Two separate EDUs supply electrical power to components throughout the control system.

Cable ReelsDual redundant reels supply electrical control cable to the subseaelectronic module within both subsea control pods. Each reel has anoperable capacity for the design water depth and includes automaticconstant tensioning and level-wind capabilities. Remote panels forcontrolling two or three reels are available.

SubseaControl PodsThe CameronControls subseaMUX drillingcontrol podscombine rapidresponse timewith an array offeatures thatmake them bothreliableand economical.

The Mark I Podis designed formost typical anddeepwater appli-cations, offering acompact footprintand weight of

10,000 lb (4536 kg). The Mark II Pod weighs 15,000 lb (6804 kg) andfeatures high integrity components, combined with high electronic andanalysis functionality, for ultra-deepwater environments. The Mark I Podis capable of 72 functions. The Mark II Pod can be configured for up to112 hydraulic functions.

The pod houses the Hydraulic Module and Electronic MUX Package. Two accumulator banks are placed conveniently around the BOP stack.

The Hydraulic Module is a standard Cameron modular pod. Modulesfeature seawater tolerant, stainless steel valves and pressure regulatorswith sliding, metal-to-metal, shear type seals.

The electronic MUX package consists of the Subsea Electronics Module(SEM) and the Solenoid Valve Package. The SEM, packaged in a dry,nitrogen-purged atmosphere housing for easy maintenance, contains dual redundant electronics which provide communications via modemwith the surface electronic system. The Solenoid Valve Package convertsthe electronic commands into hydraulic signals which actuate the largevalves in the Hydraulic Module.

For every regulated circuit on the pod, there is an accumulator bank, each containing four small accumulators, providing pilot pressure anddampening. These enable the system to operate reliably at depths of10,000 ft (3000 m).

In addition to the MUX control system, Cameron Controls also offerspiloted and direct hydraulic control systems for subsea applications, aswell as BOP control systems for land and platform use.

Subsea Piloted and DirectHydraulic Control SystemsFor operating the BOP stack and associ-ated equipment in shallower depths of5000 ft (1500 m) or less, CameronControls offers piloted hydraulic drillingcontrol systems. These systems offer thesame robust, field-proven components asthe MUX system, but they are controlledvia hydraulic connections between thesurface controls and subsea control pod.

Like the subsea MUX systems, thepiloted systems feature redundantarchitecture for absolute reliability, and arefully retrievable without pulling the riser.Subsea system functions can be operated by either the driller’s controlpanel, toolpusher’s control panel or touchscreen, as well as by the tertiary operator panel located on the diverter control unit.

Subsea pod valves incorporate Cameronsliding, metal-to-metal shear

seals for superior tolerance to fluid.

Land and Platform BOPControl SystemsCameron Controls offersreliable, economical directhydraulic drilling controlsystems for use on land or

platform. Systems are designed inaccordance with API 16D specifications, aswell as all appropriate codes and standardsfor explosive and hazardous area classifica-

tion. Dual control panels provide maximum flexibility, while the modularcomponents deliver maximum reliability and field serviceability.

Cameron Controls cellar deck-mounted piloted control systems areunprecedented for control of BOP stacks on jackup type rigs. Proventhrough years of field applications, these systems provide significantlyincreased response time forcontrol of surface-mounted equipment.

SpoolTree™ Production Systems

SpoolTree System Valve Assembly ConfigurationsIn the Cameron SpoolTree design, the spool body provides outlets to attachproduction, annulus and isolation valves for downhole functions and theelectrical penetrator bonnet assembly. The tubing hanger landing shoulder is specially ported to accept control stabs and provides hydraulic continuitybetween the production control system and downhole hydraulics.

The valves are contained both as an integral part of the spool body, and in mini-blocks external to the vertical bore of the tree. A typical valve clusterincludes production and annulus master valve, production and annulus wingvalve, crossover valve, workover valve and isolation valves for SCSSV, CIV andother requirements. Assemblies are available for 3" through 7" completions.

Basic Chemical Injection Annulus Crossover

Gas Lift ChokeProduction Choke

The Cameron SpoolTree Production System is one of the most widely usedtrees in the world and offers many time and cost saving advantages overconventional tree systems.

Instead of the typical wellhead-hanger-tree stackup, the SpoolTreedesign has a wellhead-tree-hanger stackup. In this configuration, theChristmas tree consists of a concentric bore spool with a wellheadconnector below and a wellhead connector profile on top. The tubinghanger is hung off inside the spool on a dedicated load shoulder, and the

valves are situated on the side of the spool. No valves are in the verticalbore of the wellhead/tree system. The completion is run after the tree isinstalled and the completion can be pulled with the tree in place andflowline connections undisturbed.

MOSAIC SpoolTree Production Systems can be configured with a widearray of component choices. The possible combinations of components, available pressure ratings and sizes are virtually endless. The result is acost-effective system that can be adapted to virtually any subsea job.

CAMTROL™ Production Control System

Master Control Station (MCS)The MCS provides control and monitoring of the complete system, including surface and subsea installed equipment. Two complete and

segregated MCSchannel networkssimultaneously monitordata functions to andfrom each other, sur-face and subsea. Inthe event of a channelnetwork failure, theother continues toseamlessly operate thecontrol system. Thisdual redundant archi-tecture eliminatessingle mode failurepoints and the require-ment for bumplesstransfer from the failedto the healthy channelnetwork.

The MCS featuresopen-architectureelectronics with dual

Fast Ethernet links to the host control system (or serial RS-485 and choiceof topside communication protocol including MODBUS and Profibus). It is OPC v.2 compliant for compatibility with all other OPC v.2 compliantequipment. The MCS standard modems are qualified to control up to 10Subsea Control Modules at 24.9 miles (40 km) offset, and the standardMCS can accommodate up to eight modems per channel. Ultra-longoffset capabilitiy is assured by lowering the number of SCMs.

Electrical PowerUnit (EPU)The EPU providesconditioned electricalpower to the topsideand subsea systemcomponents. The EPUsupplies dual, isolated,single-phase power forthe subsea systemthrough the compositeservice umbilical, together with powersupply modules for theMCS and HPU.

Hydraulic PowerUnit (HPU)The HPU providesredundant low- andhigh-pressure hydraulicsupplies to the subsea system. Self-contained and totally enclosed, theHPU includes duty and backup electrically driven hydraulic pumps, dualredundant filters, accumulators, and control and instrumentation for eachLP and HP hydraulic circuit. The unit operates autonomously under the

Master Control Station

control of its dedicatedprogrammable logiccontroller (PLC), whichprovides pump motorcontrol, interlocks andinterface with theMCS.

Topside UmbilicalTermination Unit(TUTU)The TUTU provides theinterface between the topside control equipment and the main umbilicalsystem. This fully enclosed unit incorporates electrical junction boxes forthe electrical power and communication cables, as well as tube work, gauges, and block and bleed valves for the appropriate hydraulic andchemical supplies.

Subsea ControlModule (SCM)Rated for waterdepths up to 10,000ft (3000 m), theCAMTROL SCM is theheart of the subseasystem. The SCMweighs less than 2200 lb (1000 kg)and measures only

29" x 29" x 34" high (736 mm x 736 mm x 860 mm high), making it thelightest, most compact control module in the industry. This allows easyinstallation and intervention by standard work-class ROVs with any of theCAMTROL suite of Multi-Mode Running Tools. Yet with up to 32 controlfunctions, 24 external (4-20 mA) electrical sensor inputs and availablemulti-dropped intelligent completion capability, the CAMTROL SCM leadsthe industry in functionality and future potential. This can reduce thenumber of SCMs needed for an entire project, thereby lowering capitalexpenses.

The SCM provides multiplexed electro-hydraulic control and monitoringof a wide variety of field functions including traditional tree functions, manifold valve control, choke adjustment, position indication, headerpressure/temperature monitoring, downholeintelligence monitoring, sand detection, corrosion monitoring and multiphase flowmeasurement. Other features include:• Oil-filled, pressure-compensated

construction designed for 14˚ to 122˚ F (–10 to+50˚C); controlled-environment electricalconnections; seawater-tolerant materialsavailable throughouthydraulic system

• Diverless or diver-assisted designs

• Dual SEMs with dual valve electronics modules are standard • HydraQuad Couplers feature pressure-balanced shear seals which,

when combined with Cameron directional control valves, providevirtually leak-free operation for lower opex and less non-productivetime.

Subsea Distribution Unit (SDU)The modular CAMTROL design allows the SDU to be either separate orfully integrated. The SDU provides the hydraulic, chemical and electrical

distribution betweenthe subsea system and the main controlumbilical. The struc-ture is designed, testedand certified to accom-modate all handlingloads. For deepwaterapplications, the unitcan incorporate hinge-over lock capability. All components are

suitably earth bonded and corrosion protected to suit the installation.Additional features include:• ROV or diver make-up flying lead jumpers• ROV or diver-operated block and bleed valves• Electrical distribution system with optional

diver or ROV replaceable fuses• ROV interfaces compliant with API 17H• Available with integral SCM and SAM

Subsea AccumulatorModule (SAM)The Subsea Accumulator Module(SAM) provides a local source ofhydraulic fluid. Each standard SAM is fitted with four 5.3 gal (20 l) LP and two 0.7 gal (2.5 l) HP accumulators, providingsufficient capacity to operate100% of all the valves on aproduction tree. The SAM has theidentical footprint, lockdown andtooling interface as the SCM andcan be replaced using any Multi-Mode Running Tool. All com-ponents are suitably earth-bondedand corrosion-protected via adedicated electrical connector.

Intervention FlexibilityThe CAMTROL system usescommon intervention methods for the retrieval and re-installationof the SCM, as well as the SAM,compact multi-phase flow meterand Cameron Willis SubseaRetrievable Chokes. Methods may include diver-assist, diverless, guideline, guidelineless and ROV-assisted.

Multi-ModeRunning Tool (MMRT)Cameron Controls offers a suite of MMRTs, which performinstallation and retrieval of thesystem elements detailed above. The MMRT design allows theseoperations to be performed using common intervention methods — diver-assisted, conventional guideline, guidelineless or with an ROV — in

water depths to 10,000 ft (3000 m).The MMRT is designed for efficient

operation with a work-class ROV and isinterface-compliant with API 17H usingweight transfer systems for neutralbuoyancy.

Deepwater Liftline Running Tool(DLRT) Designed with the identical functionalityand capability of the MMRT, the DLRT isintended for applications without highcurrents or other problematic conditions. The DLRT is suspended by a liftline andcan be guided by an ROV.

Diver Change-Out Tool (DCOT)The DCOT is designed for diver intervention applications for a variety of change-out functions. Like the MMRT, the DCOT locates onto an API 17H weightreceptacle interfaceand is run on aliftline with orwithout guide wires.

API Gate Valves

FL and FLS Gate Valve

FLS-R Gate Valve

Cameron offers both slab-style and expanding-style gate valves in fullbore through conduit designs to meet API 6A requirements.

FL™, FLS™ and FLS-R™ Gate ValvesSlab-style gates are used in the Cameron FL, FLS and FLS-Rforged body gate valves for both manual and actuatedapplications. These valves meet or exceed the requirementsof API Specifications 6A, 6A SSV/USV and 17D. The slab-style gate effects a metal-to-metal seal on the flow stream. In addition, slab-style gates may also be used when wirelinecutting is required.

Common features of the FL, FLS and FLS-R Gate Valvesinclude inert, spring-loaded, pressure-energized lip seals which areinstalled between each seat and body. These seals assist in low-pressuresealing and protect against intrusion of particle contaminants into thebody and seal areas.

The FLS-R valve is used in manually operated, large bore applications. The manual FLS-R valve shares many of the the same features as the FLSvalve and it incorporates a lower balance stem and a unique ball screwmechanism which provide remarkably low operating torque. The FLSvalve is used in high pressure, large bore applications requiring actuation.• FL Gate Valves – sizes 2-1/6" to 4-1/16"; 2000 to 5000 psi WP• FLS Gate Valves – sizes 1-13/16" to 9"; 2000 to 20,000 psi WP• FLS-R Gate Valves – sizes 4-1/16" to 11"; 5000 to 15,000 psi WP

M™ and M 215™ Gate ValvesExpanding-style gates are used in the Cameron M andM215 cast body manual gate valves. The Pow-R-Seal® gatedesign provides a positive seal against the upstream anddownstream seats simultaneously as the handwheel istightened. This seal is unaffected by line pressure fluctua-tions and vibration.

The M215 gate valves share many of the same featuresas the M and have a lower balance stem to reduceoperating torque.

• M Gate Valves – sizes 2-1/16" to 4 1/16"; 2000 to 5000 psi WP• M 215 Gate Valves – sizes 1-13/16" to 3 1/16"; 10,000 psi WP

Cameron Willis Subsea Control Chokes

Cameron Willis offers two types of subsea control chokes, non-retrievableand retrievable. The non-retrievable choke is permanently attached to asubsea structure. The retrievable chokes are designed so that the trim, actuator and retention mechanism can be retrieved to the surface formaintenance and upgrading.

Cameron Willis designs and manufactures actuators for use with theirline of subsea production control chokes. Three designs are available: theRD250 Gearbox, the Aqua-Torq and SSLCA.

Cameron Willis Subsea Control ChokesCameron Willis subsea chokes are used in production, water injection, gas injection and gas lift applications. Non-retrievable designs are usedprimarily in shallow water or as part of a retrievable manifold/moduleassembly. Retrievable chokes feature a retrievable insert and a fixedchoke body.

Both retrievable and non-retrievable subsea chokes are available withplug and cage or external sleeve trim packages. Retrievable chokes areavailable with two types of connections for attaching the retrievable insert to the choke body: Crown Connectors and Clamp Connectors.Nominal Sizes: 2", 3", 4", 6"Water Depth Rating: To 10,000 ft (3048 m)Working Pressure: To 15,000 psiOperating Temperatures: To 400˚ F (204˚C) Materials: API ratings AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, HHPerformance Verification: API 6A Appendix F, API 17DActuation: Non-Retrievable – SSLCA, RD250 Gearbox

Retrievable – Aqua-Torq, RD250 Gearbox

RD250 Gearbox ActuatorThe RD250 Gearbox actuator was developed for diver or ROV operation. In this design, the gearbox is oil-filled and pressure-compensated. Anexternal, local position indicator on the case allows precise choke settingsto be easily read.

Subsea Retrievable Choke with Clamp Connector

Aqua-Torq Subsea Actuator (Cutaway View)

SSLCA™ ActuatorThe Subsea Stepping Linear Choke Actuator (SSLCA) was developed foruse on the Cameron Willis non-retrievable control chokes. The design of the SSLCA actuator includes independent open and close pistonassemblies, providing a “double step” operation on the close piston for rapid shut-in of the choke.

Aqua-Torq™ ActuatorThe Cameron Willis Aqua-Torq Actuator is a compact and field-provenhydraulic actuator which provides actuation in precise incremental stepsfrom open to closed. It is suitable for mineral oil and water-based control fluids.

The Aqua-Torq Actuator is oil-filled and pressure-compensated and hasbeen endurance tested to a minimum of 1 million actuation pulses andhyperbaric tested to 10,000 ft (3000 m). It incorparates a local, externalposition indicator and is available with an internal LVDT remote positiontransmitter.

Remote Position FeedbackCameron Willis offers a remote position feedback sensor as an option forthe Aqua-Torq and SSLCA actuators. These sensors are robust, reliableand field-proven. They have been tested to simulated water depths of10,000 ft (3000 m).

Fast Close ModuleAn operator may be faced with closing the well faster for HIPP systems, direct hydraulic systems, or oil fields with steep gradient flowlines. Withthis in mind, Cameron Willis offers a Fast Close Module that can be usedwith Aqua-Torq and SSLCA actuators. The Fast Close Module ensuresthat the operator can close a choke within 30 seconds without damagingthe choke or causing excessive pressure drops within the hydraulic supplysystem.
