Next weekend at the 8:00am Mass we will celebrate the “First Scrutiny” for those in our catechumenal process who are prepar-
ing for initiation at the Easter Vigil. The following week, at the 8:00am Mass, we will celebrate the “Second Scrutiny,” and on March 15th and March 22nd at the 8:00am Mass, the “Third Scrutiny.” The scrutinies are also called by the more exotic name “major exorcisms.” As such, they are among the most ancient prayers in the Christian liturgical tradition. As early as
the second century, Christian communities would help those who had been chosen for Baptism to prepare for their initiation by laying on hands and by prayers for protection and deliverance from evil (i.e., exorcisms). At the beginning of the third century, Hippolytus told the Christians at Rome to celebrate these rites with catechumens on a daily basis during the final stages of prep-aration for Baptism. Today we continue to celebrate these powerful rituals, convinced that those about to enter into a covenant with God in Christ stand in need of our prayers for deliverance and protection. We also understand today that our prayers for protection from evil are not limited to those formally engaged in the catechumenal process. Just as our entire community is called to journey with the cate-chumens throughout the Lenten season, we recognize the need we all share for freedom from evil and its effects.
El próximo fin de semana en la misa de las 8:00am, celebraremos el "Primer Escrutinio" para aquellos que estan en proceso catecu-menal y se están preparando para la iniciación en la Vigilia Pas-cual. La semana siguiente, a las 8:00 a.m., celebraremos el "Segundo Escrutinio", y el 15 y 22 de marzo en la Misa de las 8:00am, el "Tercer Escrutinio". Los escrutinios también son llamados por el nombre más exótico "exorcismos mayores". Como tales, se encuentran entre las ora-ciones más antiguas de la tradición litúrgica cristiana.
