“And What Are You Prepared to Do?”
One of my favorite facets of the decade of the 1980’s was the mov-
ies. One of the more memorable ones for me was the 1987 film,
“The Untouchables.”
The film starred Kevin Costner and veteran actor Sean Connery.
Costner played famed crime fighter Eliot Ness, while Connery won
an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor with his portrayal of
Irish-American Chicago police officer Jim Malone.
Malone, easily my favorite character in the film, is a veteran cop
who walks a beat. Fed up with the corruption he sees on a daily
basis, he joins Ness in his pursuit of Al Capone. Malone spurs
Ness on by frequently repeating the question, “And what are you
prepared to do?” It was a question he asked even with his dying
breath.
“And what are you prepared to do?” is a question that followers of
Jesus would do well to ponder.
One of my fears as a pastor is that somehow we have lost sight of
the urgency of our task. If indeed, we believe in the reality of eter-
nal life for those who follow Christ and eternal separation from God
for those who do not, what are we prepared to do?
Many of us, quite comfortable in our faith, shake our heads and
lament the condition of the world around us. “It’s a terrible thing,”
we say and continue on with our lives as if there is nothing we can
do.
If we knew the secret to eradicating a terrible disease, but kept it to
ourselves we would be considered monsters. If we knew how to
provide unlimited, clean energy for the world and told no one, it
would be considered a terrible tragedy.
Yet many of us are content to hide in our holy huddles known as
churches and throw up our hands in despair at the state of our
world while keeping the transforming power of the love of Jesus to
ourselves as if it were a state secret.
What is more important than introducing someone to Christ and
helping them to know the depth of God’s love for them? Do you
really believe that? If you do I have just one question for you….
“And what are you prepared to do?”
Grace and peace,
Pastor Willard

“Towards a Greater Understanding: An Introduction to Middle Eastern Dynamics”
Have you ever watched news reports on television or read articles in a newspaper or magazine and wondered to
yourself, “I wish I knew more about what is going on in the Middle East but I don’t even know where to start?”
If so, this may be a class that interests you.
Utilizing documentaries, handouts, maps and articles, Pastor Willard will trace events through history from the
closing of the biblical canon to today, identify key leaders from all sides and discuss the opportunities (both real-
ized and missed) that have helped shape the Middle East as we know it today.
Bring an open mind and lots of questions.

SHOES FROM THE SOUL - Jacob Hisle holds a child on his shoulders, left, while chat-
ting with Brandon Hobbs. They joined about 14 other youth from Centenary United
Methodist Church for a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Jacob knew their assign-
ment was to work with children in Bible school settings and other hands-on assistance
in a community.
He did not know he would come home with a dream to fulfill.
The 14-year-old freshman at Martha Layne Collins High School saw how many children
wore no shoes or wore shoes that were filthy, maybe 10 years old, and filled with card-
board to serve as soles, or sandals that were taped together.
So Jacob’s soul was touched. He has created a ministry to collect primarily children’s
shoes – gently used or new – “any size, any gender, anything, anytime” since he will
ship 40 pairs throughout the year through a Louisville-based ministry.
* The donations can be dropped off at the church at Fifth and Main Street in Shel-
byville or individuals can call 633-4510 for more information.
