Photo by Beth FussellPeople’s Bank on Wax Road recently collected hundreds of pounds of food for the Central Food Bank. People’s Bank employees are pictured above with Mr. and Mrs. Grissom of the Central Food Bank and Councilman Moak. Non-perishable food items for the Central Food Bank can be donated at People’s Bank, the Central Fire Department on Sullivan Road, Winn Dixie, and at various local schools and churches.

My Mom was born here in Central in 1933, and died in 1997 in her home on that same family farm on the Comite River. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother beyond comparison. She raised four boys, refereed our arguments, played games with us, and bandaged the damage we inevitably did to ourselves and each other. She was the kind of grandmother that had tea parties and picnics with my girls and always had treats in the snack drawer. Mia and I considered Mom and Dad some of our closest friends. She was an amazing woman and I miss her. Cancer touches all of our lives. We all have a story like mine; someone close to us who has battled cancer. The American Cancer Society holds only one major fundraiser each year; Relay For Life. If just a small percentage of us who have been impacted by cancer support this year’s Relay For Life in Central, it will be a huge success. Before I give you the details of

this year’s relay, I want to challenge everyone to think for just a moment about how your life would have been different if cancer had been cured 20 years ago. I can tell you that for me, with that vision in my mind, this year’s Relay For Life won’t go by without my support. Pledge a few dollars, come out and rejoice over the lives of those who are beating cancer, and celebrate the lives of those who did not. Consider giving a few dollars or a few minutes on November 16th to help find a cure for cancer. For the first time in the Central Relay’s 5 year life, this year’s Relay will include a “5K Gleaux Run”, which is a night-time 5K run held at Central’s new school facility with glow sticks galore. There will be a silent auction, a luminary service, music, food and the ever-popular pet parade. So imagine a world without cancer and come out and support Central’s Relay for Life. To make a donation or register as a Cancer Survivor and attend the pancake breakfast Saturday morning, go to RelayForLife.org/CentralLA. To register for the 5K Gleaux Run go to Active.com and look for the “Central Gleaux Run.” Cancer Survivors run free but should sign up on the Relay for Life website, not on active.com. Helping to beat Cancer; now THAT is Good News for a Great City.

Press Release from Record Dental From March through June, Record Dental Center joined the “Smiles for Life” (www.smilesforlife.org) campaign in which hundreds of dental practices throughout the U.S. and Canada professionally whitened teeth to raise money for seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged children in their local communities and around the world. Participating dentists are members of the Crown Council, (www.crowncouncil.com) an alliance of leading-edge dental teams that are passionately committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer and serving their communities through charitable work. With 100% of the money raised going directly to “Smiles for Life”, Dr. Record and his staff donated their time and patients gave to Smiles for Life to purchase discounted bleaching

with products provided by Phillips Oral Healthcare (https://www.philipsoralhealthcare.com/en_us/whitening/). The offers included Zoom! Whitening systems (in-office and take-home) and Record Dental Center collected a total of $2865.00. Each dental office affiliated with the Crown Council and “Smiles for Life” were able to direct up to 50% of the proceeds to a local charity. On Tuesday October 8, 2013 Record Dental Center presented a check to The City of Central Food Bank for $1432.50. Because of this success, Dr. Record has already committed to participating again. For details of this event and others, check their website www.recorddentalcenter.com or follow them on facebook (www.facebook.com/recorddental), twitter (@recorddentalcen) or instagram (@recorddentalcen).

Yesterday (10/16) was my birthday. Birthdays are a big deal for my family. As a matter of fact, we consider it somewhat of a national holiday when someone in our family has a birthday. We try to make the entire day special from the time the birthday boy/girl wakes up until he/she finally goes to bed at the end of the day. This goes for dad & mom, too! In addition to a few presents, we try to do whatever the birthday boy/girl wants to do, within reason on a limited budget. Special meals are also prepared and served on a special celebration plate. All of this may sound a bit much, but it is a family tradition that my family really enjoys. I encourage you to make the birthdays in your family special, too. There is another birthday that should be special in the lives of those who truly belong to Jesus Christ. This birthday should be even more special than our physical birthday. This other birthday is our spiritual birthday; our “new-birth” day. In talking with Nicodemus in John 3:3, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” This statement puzzled Nicodemus. He asked Jesus, “How can a man be born

when he is old?” That is a good question! Nicodemus’ question gave Jesus the opportunity to explain to him how one can be born again. In John 3:5, Jesus told Nicodemus that to receive new-birth, you must be born of the Spirit of God. In other words, the Spirit of God must bring your sin-deadened heart to life to enable you to repent of (turn from) your sins and trust in the all-sufficient works of Jesus Christ alone in order to be forgiven of your sins and reconciled to God. This new-birth day, accomplished by the work of God in our heart, is worthy of celebration! For those who are sure of their new birth in Jesus Christ, rejoice; celebrate the work of God in your heart that has now joined you to His family, forever! You can choose any day to celebrate this, or why not celebrate it each day with thanksgiving to God? If you are NOT sure if you have received a new-birth day, contact one of the local Central pastors who would love to talk to you about what would be the most important day of your life – the day you trust in Jesus! Now that’s a day worth celebrating!

Powercat PressThank You for Making Trevor’s wish Come True!

By Coach Osborne Given a month in between meets, the Central swim team showed their hard work paying off with even faster times. All three girls’ relays showed tremendous improvement. The meet began with the girls 200 medley relay of Emerald Roney, Lyndee Debetaz, Acacia Porch, and Emily Hollier cutting 8 seconds off their time. The 200 freestyle relay consisting of Anna Johansson, Claire Holmes, and Destiny Bankston swam 9 seconds faster. The 400 freestyle relay was 3 seconds faster. The boys’ relays matched the girls’ effort by finishing third in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays by cutting 3 seconds and 2 seconds off their times, respectively. Individually, the Wildcats posted four more state qualifying times. Matthew Usher swam the 200 freestyle in 2:12.56 and Kade McAdams swam the 200 IM in 2:28.15. Sean Murphy qualified in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.69 and the 500 freestyle

with a time of 6:09.73. At the end of the 500 freestyle, Sean Murphy experienced symptoms of exhaustion. Thankfully, Sean has recovered and is well. Nevertheless, Coach Osborne and Coach Hodges are sincerely thankful to the parents with health care training from competing schools (Walker nurse, Episcopal EMT, Catholic fireman) that came to Sean’s aide. The meet officials and meet management from Crawfish Aquatics were also very supportive. Without Sean, the boys were unable to participate in the 400 relay which dropped the team out of the top 3. Meanwhile, many individual swimmers showed considerable improvement. Chelsea Hambrick, Claire Holmes, and Destiny Bankston reduced their time by over 3 seconds. Brennon Young continued to improve his 50 freestyle time, and Emerald Roney cut two seconds off her 100 freestyle time. The final meet before the City Meet will be this Sunday, October 20 at 1:30.

Trevor inspired the students of Central High to rally support for his wish to feed the hungry through food and monetary donations to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. The Central community raised $16,400 in support in the past few weeks. Trevor surprised the student body at the CHS Pep Rally last Friday. After putting on his Wildcat jersey bearing #1, he raised a fist and yelled “Go Wildcats!”. Trevor was and is an inspiration. Feed the hungry. Go Trevor! Student Council President Ashton Kennedy, who saw Trevor on Monday, wants to thank everyone who participated in making Trevor’s wish come true. Ashton said, “Central High School is deeply saddened by the news of Trevor’s passing. We know he is in

the thoughts and prayers of many in the community. Please continue to pray for Trevor’s family. Thank you so much for the support of the community.”

It is a great time to be a Wildcat. I

have never been as proud of a group of

young people as I am of our outstanding

students. In my 35 years in education I

cannot ever remember a greater example

of unselfishness and compassion than

was shown by our students and the

Central Community School System in

making Trevor’s wish come true. From

the donations, to the singing of “Happy

Birthday”, our students showed us all

that Central High School is about we

and not me. Special Thanks to Student

Council President Ashton Kennedy and

the entire Student Council. God Bless

and remember to “have some fun”.

Extremely Proud,

Coach Prescott

WILDCAT UPDATE

deciSive Win over denHamPhoto by Michael Spangler Central traveled to Denham Springs last Friday in its annual rivalry game against our neighbors across the river and rolled over the Yellow Jackets 40-6. Wildcat fans, as usual, traveled well, filling the stands on the visitors’ side. After the game, Coach Sid Edwards commented, “Great performance. Great game. Happy with it. It was a rivalry game and I thought we flexed our muscle tonight.” The game looked like a great one for the Wildcats from the start. The team took off running in the first quarter and never looked back. Hayes hit popular target Gary Triplett in the first quarter for the first points of the game. A short run by Hayes just before halftime, followed by a Greg Noel extra point, and Central led Denham 14-0.

Jarrad Hayes threw three more touchdown passes in the second half, two to Gary Triplett and one to Joseph Pourciau. Jake Myer scored as well on a 14-yard run. Central’s defense did a great job holding the Yellow Jackets to 6 points. Central’s offensive line continued to step up their game, protecting Hayes in the pocket and opening up holes for senior Jake Myer. Myer led all rushers with a career-best 110 yards on 20 carries, while Triplett racked up 136 yards on 7 receptions. Coach Sid explained the difference he saw this week. “I saw us playing with a lot of grit and toughness and its something that has been missing the first four or five weeks. We lined up and ran the football and that excites me.”

Alumni Invited to CPS Homecoming Game

By Coach LeBouef The Central High Volleyball team has extended their win streak, winning 13 of their last 15 matches and moving up to 6-1 in district play. This Thursday the Lady Wildcats will be playing St. Michael in what will be the deciding match for a district title! More exciting, the CHS volleyball team will be partnering with The Smile Delivery Foundation for our home match on Thursday, October 17th vs. St. Michael for a benefit fundraiser! We're calling it our "Serving More Than Aces" match! The Smile Delivery Foundation is a local, non-profit organization that benefits children with life threatening

illnesses. Their hope is to "deliver smiles" during extended stays in the hospital. They work closely with OLOL and St. Jude's with hopes to spread a little bit of joy. Christmas is coming up and they are in need of some Christmas gifts! Their website is http://www.smiledeliveryfoundation.org if you would like to read more about them. CHS volleyball will be donating the proceeds from our St. Michael match to the Smile Delivery Foundation. In addition, we will also be going to Toy's-R-US for our team to pick out some special, personally chosen items for some amazing children. Come out on Thursday to support the Wildcats and the Smile Delivery Foundation!
