Pope Francis Speaker Series 2015

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7:00 pm Christ the King Mesa - Presentation Hall

Speaker: Clark Massey, Founder of A Simple House Addressing the Tangled Roots of Poverty:

The Material and Spiritual Cost: $5 per person at door, $15 for families of 4+

Clark Massey draws from over a decade of experience working with the poorest of poor in America’s cities. The talk will tackle the complicated relationship between spiritual and material poverty. He will explain why evangelization, charity, and justice need to be merged.

Clark Massey started his career as an economist in Washington, DC, but he felt a call to personally know and serve the poor. He has been doing missionary and charitable work for over ten years, and he is the founder of A Simple House of Sts. Francis and Alphonsus. A Simple House is a radical response to the needs of the American poor- an urban mission with locations in Washington, DC and Kansas City, MO. At A Simple House, full-time missionaries serve the homeless and families living in project neighborhoods.

Sponsored by Christ the King and the Diocesan Office of Marriage and Respect Life

Please note that the Parish Office will be closed on January 19, 2015. Regular office hours will resume on January 20, 2015.

This week, the Church’s liturgy switches back to Ordinary Time, reflected in the green colors that decorate our church and the green vestments that the priest and deacon wear. Why are we “going green” in this new season of the Church year? Does this have something to do with environmental concerns on the part of the Church?

Yes and no. Green is the color of growth; even in the desert we know that! But the growth that the Church is having us focus on in Ordinary Time is not the growing of a garden or the planting of a new tree. The color green reminds us of the growth in faith, hope, and love that is the normal, ordinary work of Christian life. So, in a way, the Church is focusing on ecology, what Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have both called “human ecology”.

What is this human ecology? We think of all of those things that make up human life: family, friendships, work, relaxation, learning new things, hobbies and interests, memories of the past, planning for the future, enjoying the present. We all know that it is possible for us to lose the proper balance, and the result is that we damage the environment of our humanity. These damages can be extreme, just like in nature—the earthquakes that sometimes destroy families and relationships. Other times, there is a gradual neglect of our human environment that over time can distance us from what is really important in life.

During Ordinary Time, the Church allows us space to cultivate the garden of our heart. We are entering a rather short period of Ordinary Time, between the two great seasons of the Church year, Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Those times of the year are rather intense, focusing on the great mysteries of Christ. Ordinary Time is a bit more gentle, but still necessary for our growth in holiness and love of God.

So, when the Popes call us to focus on human ecology, we must look at our lives and ask some important questions: “Am I cultivating a good environment? Is my humanity growing for the better? Am I learning how to love more, how to forgive more? Is there any area that is damaged and needs healing? What can I do to enrich my life?”

I’m glad you asked! Along with all the daily prayer and practice of the faith, our parish tries to offer special events and opportunities for cultivating and growing in faith. One such event is coming up this Valentine’s Day and is a chance for the couples of our parish to be enriched and supported as they live their vocation. Hosted by the Knights of Columbus, this Valentine’s Day event will be a great opportunity for the couples of our parish to come together: for food, for fun, and for a talk by yours truly! Couples of all ages are invited!

Please see the details in this bulletin and listen for announcements about how and where to get your tickets. I am looking forward to sharing this time with you and of offering more events for us to grow in our faith here at Christ the King. In Christ, Pastor

Perpetual Adoration Lord I take many things for granted. But for the gifts of faith and grace – then my ingratitude is unforgivable. I’ve been chosen – just as

Paul was. Faith is an election…Grace is a gift of life by which I can really say, “Abba – Father”…Oh my Father, You gave me the gift; give me also gratitude and appreciation. Let me be lost in wonder! ~My Meditations on Saint Paul

During this past Christmas Season those who have been able to dedicate a specific hour each week in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Peregrine Chapel have made it possible to keep it exposed day and night. We are in constant need of more intentional adorers. Especially the hours between 11 pm and 4 am which are difficult to fill, but are such rewarding hours to be with the Lord because of the solitude you feel at that time. Please look at the faces chart on the Parish website under Perpetual Adoration, or the entrance to the Chapel and Church. When we have several committed adorers during an hour then it is easy to arrange for times when you are unable to attend. Please contact Dick Jacobson at [email protected] for more information.

2015 Charity and Development Appeal “Whenever our eyes are open to acknowledge the other, we grow in the light of faith and knowledge of God. Let us try a little harder to take the first step and to become involved.” –Pope Francis

As we look forward to the 2015 CDA Launch Weekend on February 7 & 8, we wish to thank the parishioners at Christ the King for last year's outstanding participation in the Charity and Development Appeal. The message from Pope Francis asks us to say "yes" in our service to others.

Every day, as we move through the routines of our lives, we observe others in our community. But do we really see them? When we take the time to see each other with the same loving compassion that our Lord sees us, we will become more aware of the signs of

need all around us. The Charity and Development Appeal is committed to this mission - and with your help – is able to support over 70 educational, charitable, and spiritual organizations beyond the boundaries of any one parish.

Please join us in God’s mission to never let our brothers and sisters go unseen. To make a gift or see more information about the CDA, please visit diocesephoenix.org/cda.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heaven along. O, praise Him! Alleluia! ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Ps 66 (65): 4 All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High!

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I be-

lieve in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all

things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered

death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds

from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of

sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

God is my shepherd so nothing shall I want, I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love. I walk by the quiet waters of peace. Though I should wander the valley of death, I fear no evil, for You are at my side. Your rod and Your staff, my comfort and my hope. Your body, your blood, united with us. Your graces of love poured out from above. As heaven kisses earth we joyously proclaim, “Blessed are you, Lord; God forever, God of creation! Blessed are you, Lord; God forever, God of creation!” One heart, one mind, one family with angels and saints give praise to thee. As heaven kisses earth we joyously proclaim, The angels stand before you now and praise you night and day. Resounding in their heav’nly song, we join them as we say

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,

Pure and holy, tried and true; With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living

Sanctuary for you.

Over all the earth you reign on high Ev’ry mountain stream ev’ry sunset sky But my one request, Lord my only aim Is that You reign in me again.

Lord reign in me reign in Your power Over all my dreams in my darkest hour. You are the Lord of all I am So won’t You reign in me again. Over ev’ry thought, over ev’ry word May my life reflect the beauty of my Lord. ‘Cause You mean more to me than any earthly thing, So won’t you reign in me again?

¿Estoy aprendiendo a amar mejor, a perdonar mejor?
