In the ϐirst reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his ϐirst letter. Once a frightened, uneducated ϐisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Every- thing Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners,

This is the fifth Sunday on which we have not been able to gather together for the Eucharist. I’m sure

you feel the absence as your parish priests do, also.

We have the consolation of a chapel in the rectory and are blessed with the sacramental presence in the

tabernacle, and we can enter the church to offer mass each day. This, the Divine Office, the rosary and daily

meditation keep us focused.

You know that you and your intentions are uppermost in our prayers, and you may certainly call the

rectory to ask for prayers for yourselves and your loved ones.

I came across the following prayer in the National Catholic Reporter and I think it might be helpful

during these days of the pandemic.

Prayer For a Pandemic

May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.

May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between

preserving their health or making their rent.

May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who

have no options.

May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who

have no margin at all.

May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.

As fear grips our country, let us choose love.

During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be

a loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen

My brother priests and I will do whatever we can to assist you within the bounds of all the precautions of

the pandemic.

On a very joyful note, you may have heard that our neighbor, Father Kevin Sweeney, the pastor of

St. Michael’s Parish, has been named Bishop of Paterson, New Jersey. While we are sorry to lose his presence

here in our diocese, we are thrilled with Pope Francis’ choice. We promise him our prayers.

Let’s pray for each other

Pope Francis’ Coronavirus Prayer

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey

as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus,

keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People,

know what we need, and trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee,

joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us,

He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross,

to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection,

O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test –

and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
