December 30, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

This Sunday we have our annual liturgical feast honoring the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Today, a few days after Christmas, we widen our focus from the baby Jesus to also think of his mother and his foster father and the family that they were. Everybody knows that babies make a huge difference to the people they are born to! The birth of Jesus made a huge difference to the whole world, but first to his mother Mary and to her spouse Joseph.

People say that there are many kinds of families. Some are great; some are not so great. But the Holy Family was truly unique! Remember, it is the carefully considered teaching of our Catholic Church and our firm belief that Mary was a virgin both before and after the birth of Jesus. She understood, and Joseph accepted, that the two of them were being given absolutely unprecedented responsibilities for the salvation of others. If and until we get to heaven, you and I will never fully understand this loving couple’s commitment to Mary’s virginity, nor will we be able to appreciate the sacrifice and courage of Joseph and Mary as they lived their lives together—and worried about Jesus.

Go back to the beginning. The message that Mary received from the angel Gabriel gave her a unique vocation. You should read it again in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1, verse 26ff.. Realize that it took a great man to listen to her and to believe her, and to cooperate with God's plan. When Mary told Joseph about the appearance and message of an angel, and that she had become pregnant as a result of that visit, his reaction as a God-fearing man was he could not take her as his wife. But then Joseph received a message from an angel, delivered in a dream. We read that in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 1:18ff. Let me copy it here for our greater appreciation of Saint Joseph:

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention, when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

Amazing! Therefore I invite you to read for yourself the Infancy Narratives - chapters 1 and 2 of the Gospels of Saint Matthew and Saint Luke. And you might want to pray a prayer like this, for yourself and for your family: "O God, you chose Mary and Joseph and offered them an awesome opportunity to be parents of your Son. They could have said no. Their yes to being a holy family gives us a shining example of trust and love. Graciously grant that we may imitate them in the virtues of family life. Form our families through acceptance and forgiveness. With faith, hope, and love, may all the members of our family become saints and meet Joseph and Mary in heaven.”

Just as Mary was pregnant for many months before she gave birth to her baby in a stable, we too may have to wait for good things to develop and for us to be ready for responsibility. It was that way when I was thinking about becoming a priest. I had to go to the seminary for college and then four more years of spiritual formation and theol-ogy classes after that. It still takes many years for someone who feels that he has a call from God - a vocation - to be evaluated by the bishop and be prepared for ministry to the people of the Church.

For more than three years already, a member of our parish - Dr. Jonathan Reyes, M.D. - has been discerning a call from God to become a Deacon of the Catholic Church. He has had the support of his wife Macrina and their three grown children. I have walked with him on this journey. With my recommendation, he was accepted into the diaconate formation program at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers. That spans five years of study. Still going to work, he also goes to the seminary twice a week for evening classes, and fulfills many related responsibilities. Dr. Reyes will continue his professional work after he is ordained, but as a Deacon will assist at the altar, be able to baptize and witness weddings, visit the sick, go to wakes, and do other pastoral duties, helping us priests for your benefit.

Jonathan is getting closer to his ordination as a Deacon. That should take place in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral by our Archbishop. God willing, this wonderful event is likely to be in one year and a half - in June of 2020. As we turn to new calendars, please pray that God—who has some plan for everyone– will continue to call Jonathan to serve Him and us in the Sacrament of Holy Orders as a Deacon of our Catholic Church. Msgr. William Belford

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA

The Catholic of America is unique among univer-sities in the United States– even among Catholic Universities. Established by Pope Leo XIII and the Bishops of the United States in 1887, and located in our nation’s capital, it is the national university of the Catholic Church. In addition to alumni who live in every state, more than one third of the U.S. bishops and 12,000 priests and religious are Catholic University alumni, including five of the six American Cardinal Archbishops. Through it’s 12 schools and 23 research centers located in Washington, every year the University provides a great education in the Catholic intel-lectual tradition to almost 7,000 students.

Next weekend, we will be taking up the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Your investment through this annual second col-lection at Masses will enable the University to continue to support the Church and to advance its work preparing the next generation of leader-ship for our nation. Thank you for your help.

SAINT TERESA’S SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAIR

Congratulations and thanks to the many members of our St. Teresa School family who helped to make our annual fundraising SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAIR so pleasant and so successful! Many parishioners and friends enjoyed their visit and took home presents and prizes. We thank every-one who came! And more than $16,000 was raised for the benefit of our school children. Over the course of the Fair, Home School Association Board Members worked many hours. We salute Allison Cuddy, Stephanie DeSimone, Christine LoPorto, Stefanie LoPinto, Jennifer Costello, Donna Harkins, Ana Santiago, and Tara Mineo. And members of our school families did so much. We thank everyone from the Cammayo, Clark, Donnellan, Gofas, Hutchinson, LoCascio, Mezzacappa, Moreno, Nweke, Romano, Surat, Walsh, Tesi, Spratley/Lopez, Cecil, Coletti, Shapiro, Lucciola, Lyons, Avena, Her-nandez, Bilotti, Flovarsky, Arbitrio, Figueroa, Ochman, Peteroy, Wiley, Montas, Arce, Sher, Guarnieri, Tarasiewics, Bordonaro, Maher, Conception, and Perera Families. The HSA would also like to thank many friends and neighbors for a variety of helpful donations. Gifts and prizes and services came from the Angelopoulos, Bilotti, Bock, Clark, Comeau, Costello, DePeppo, Duffy, Eisenhardt, Gofas, Harkins, Hutchinson, LoPinto, LoPorto, Lyons, McWalters, Pfuhler, Jordan, Milejski, and Luongo Families and from St. Teresa’s Teachers, Cub Scouts Pack 37, Boy Scouts Troop 37, St. Teresa’a Y.A.A., and Bagels & Buns.

ARE YOU READY FOR A CHANGE?

If you are planning some time away this New Year, please consider signing up now to provide your

weekly donation electronically when you’re away. It’s easy to do and makes a big difference for our

parish. Besides us receiving your contributions each Sunday, this saves you preparing those envelopes. It also saves us money printing and distributing them!

To see how easy this is, please click on the ParishPay/WeShare link on our website

FIRST FRUITS OF GRANT-WRITING As announced last week in the bulletin, two grants totaling $20,500 have been given to our parish to help us air-condition our gym. Since last April a group of parish volunteers—Lynn Randle, Joe Marro, Frank Schiano, Anthony DeFazio, and Louise Cottone– have been preparing applications for grants from bank foundations and other organizations that give money to local needs and projects. Most exclude gifts to reli-gious communities for their worship, but some gladly help with projects—food pantries, for example—that serve the whole community. Since many people be-sides our parishioners use our gym, we are very happy that the Northfield Bank Foundation and the Nicotra Foundation are each giving grants to help us air-condition our gym.
