Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, The journey that human beings have from conception to birth is awesome. Praised be God for creating us and making us so amazing! And blessings to the parents who respect their children’s rights as human beings and protect them from the danger of abortion. As we need to know, “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the first moment of conception...Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every pro-cured abortion. This teaching remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law... An abortion does irreparable harm to the innocent person who is put to death, as well as to the parents and to the whole of society.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 2270-2272. Since October is Respect Life Month, I went to the website of the National Right to Life Committee to learn more about the typical amazing stages of a human being’s rapid development. I am happy to share that with you. Msgr. William Belford
Day 1: Fertilization. All human chromosomes are present; unique human life begins.
Day 6: Embryo begins implantation in the uterus.
Day 22: Heart begins to beat with the child’s own blood.
Week 3: The child’s backbone, spinal column and nervous system are forming. The liver, kidneys and intestines begin
to take shape.
Week 4: By the end of week four, the child is ten thousand times larger than the fertilized egg.
Week 5: Eyes, legs, and hands begin to develop.
Week 6: Brain waves are detectable; mouth and lips are present; fingernails are forming.
Week 7: Eyelids and toes form; the nose is distinct. The baby is kicking and swimming.
Week 8: Every organ is in place; fingerprints begin to form. By the 8th week the baby can begin to hear.
Weeks 9 and 10: Teeth begin to form, fingernails develop. The baby can turn his head, frown, hiccup.
Weeks 10 and 11: The baby can “breathe” amniotic fluid and urinate.
Week 11 The baby can grasp objects placed in its hand. The baby has circulation and skeletal structure.
Week 12: The baby has all of the parts necessary to experience pain. The baby can suck its thumb.
Week 14: At this age, the heart pumps several quarts of blood through the body every day.
Week 15: The baby has an adult’s taste buds.
Month 4: Bone marrow is now beginning to form. The heart is pumping 25 quarts of blood a day. By the end of month
4 the baby will be 8-10 inches in length and will weigh up to half a pound.
Week 17: The baby can have dream (REM) sleep.
Week 20: At 20 weeks the baby recognizes its mother's voice. At 20 weeks, the unborn child is capable of feeling pain.
This is also the earliest at which partial-birth abortion is performed.
Week 21: Babies can routinely be saved at 21 to 22 weeks after fertilization, and sometimes they can be saved even
younger.
Months 5 and 6: The baby practices breathing by inhaling amniotic fluid into its developing lungs. The baby will grasp at
the umbilical cord when it feels it. Most mothers feel an increase in movement, kicking, and hiccups from the baby. Oil
and sweat glands are now functioning. The baby is now twelve inches long or more, and weighs up to one and a half
pounds.
Months 7 through 9: Eyeteeth are present. The baby opens and closes his eyes. The baby is using four of the five
senses (vision, hearing, taste, and touch.) The baby knows the difference between waking and sleeping, and can relate
to the moods of the mother. The baby’s skin begins to thicken,. A layer of fat is produced and stored beneath the
skin. Antibodies are built up, and the baby’s heart begins to pump 300 gallons of blood per day.
The Final Week Approximately one week before birth the baby stops growing and, usually head-down, “drops” into the
pelvic cavity. It is time for childbirth.

Scheduled Masses for 2018
People rightly wish to remember with an announced Mass the days of their loved ones’ birthdays, weddings, anniversaries of death. Praying for our loved ones, both living and deceased, helps them with our prayers to the Lord on their behalf, and strengthens our connection with them.
We know that many of our parishioners are patiently waiting for The Mass Book for 2018 to open, so that they can request that the Mass on a certain date be offered for their loved ones. The Mass Book for all of 2018 will be open in the rectory starting this Tuesday October 17 at 10am.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to last Sunday’s sec-ond collection for hurricane and earthquake victims in Puerto Rico and Mexico. A very impressive $2,976 was collected and was forwarded to Cardinal Dolan’s office. And when he was here on October 5 for Mass with our school—there might be coverage in this week’s CATHO-LIC NEW YORK—students gave him a check they had collected for $2,560. His Eminence was very grateful and can bring this help when he goes to visit Puerto Rico soon.
