July 2, 2017

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

Let us praise and thank Almighty God on these special days for the religious freedom that is such a blessed part of our nation’s independence. Join us if you can at Masses on July Fourth at 8:30am and12 Noon as we pray for our country. And all this week meditate on these words of the Opening Prayer of the Mass on Independence Day: “Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations. For what has been achieved, we give you thanks. For the work that still remains we ask your help. And as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that under your providence, our coun-try may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.” I want to keep you up-to-date about our plan to create a safe and happy residence for eight to ten autistic young adults in our unused convent building on Windsor Road. As announced in the June 4th bulletin, we held an informational meeting on Wednesday, June 21, for parishioners and neighbors. Everyone was welcome. Mr. Scott LaRue, President and CEO of ArchCare, which is the non-profit healthcare ministry of our Archdiocese, was present to explain our thinking so far, to hear concerns, and to answer questions. He committed to bringing our neighbors’ concerns to appropriate authorities about issues of parking, noise, traffic, etc., and promised to maintain a dialogue as more information becomes clear. There will be another community meeting in August on a date to be decided. Both NYI and the Staten Island Advance did positive stories about our plans during this week. If you have not seen them yet, I encourage you to take a look: http://www.ny1.com/nyc/staten-island/news/2017/06/27/church-offers-to-rent-unused-convent-to-adults-with-autism.html / http://www.silive.com/news/2017/06/unused_st_teresas_convent_will.html. At my Masses last Sunday, I spoke about a priest from Austria, Father Leo Maasburg, who in 2011 published his personal account of amazing years as driver, translator, and spiritual helper to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. His book Mother Teresa of Calcutta - A Personal Portrait comes from Ignatius Press and lists for $16.95. You can get a copy locally at St.Pauls/Alba House Bookstore at 2187 Victory Blvd., or order it online. It makes fascinating reading for a communist or an atheist, but is even better for us Catholics who love Mother - now Saint - Teresa of Calcutta. Let me borrow from the book's cover: "Mother Teresa's life sounds like a legend. This Albanian girl entered an Irish order to go to India as a missionary. She became an 'angel of the poor' revered by Christians, Muslims, Hindus and unbelievers. She brought the message of Christian love to the slums of Calcutta and to the whole world. Msgr. Massburg was there as her companion for many years, offering the Mass and sacraments for her Sisters, implementing her urgent decisions, traveling with her throughout the world, including to Russia in the days when any sign of religion was forbidden. He records astonishing stories that he witnessed at Mother Teresa's side - many experiences that reveal a humorous, gifted woman of limitless trust who has a real message of hope for our time. This is the story of one of the most important women of the twentieth century as it has never been told before." Especially because summer should be a time for more reading and less TV, let me offer you a free book. We received a shipment this week of 100 copies of an interesting, attractive prayerbook called MAGNIFICAT. Recently I responded to their offer to send us copies of their July issue. These are free for our parishioners to sample and possibly to subscribe. You are welcome to take one as long as supplies last. If you take one and decide it is not for you, just bring it back so someone else may try it. If you do decide to subscribe, you will probably like it. I have been praying with MAGNIFICAT for many years. In handy booklet form, 4x7 inches, it comes monthly. It contains prayers, Mass readings for every day, beautiful art, and stories of saints. Order it for yourself or for someone you love! MAGNIFICAT makes a great gift to a Catholic man or woman. A subscription is your chance to send twelve reminders of your affection during the next year. Because it is attractive and easy to use, even on a bus or lunch hour, it can make a real difference in the life of someone - who may in turn say a few prayers for you! A year's subscription is $45, but the publisher is making an offer you can't refuse. You can have a trial subscrip-tion for four months - for the cost of about three cups of coffee! Simply send $10 with your contact information to PO Box 822, Yonkers NY 10702 and you will receive four more issues to help you pray magnificently with MAGNIFICAT.

Finally, our bulletin publisher is being kind to his employees by giving them an extended holiday this week. So look for a special edition of our bulletin next Sunday, with a cover photo of people at a beach, and a useful reminder: Do not take a vacation from God! Yours in Christ our Lord, Msgr. William Belford
