June 14, 2020

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, I greet you with the last verses of the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, heard last Sunday: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you!

We support one another in times of trouble, and we look forward to the grace of our sacraments. So here is the latest information about the big question on your mind and mine: When can we come to Mass in our church and re-ceive Holy Communion? The answer as of June 10: not yet. To protect people from a terrible virus, we are obeying New York State rules. And in New York City we are allowed to be open only for private prayer and for confessions.

Encouraging our patience and giving us hope of soon being able to return to public worship here in our parish, is this fact. Outside Staten Island, Manhattan, and The Bronx, parishes in our seven upstate counties - Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan - do have permission from the state to resume weekday Masses (but not Sunday Masses), and baptisms, weddings, and funerals, at 25% of church capacity.

Even though weekday and Sunday Masses are a few weeks ahead of us, Cardinal Dolan and we priests would like to offer a special day for people to come for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We know that Jesus is rich in mercy for sinners, even giving up his life for us by his death on the cross. And so on the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (and think of the large statue facing the congregation) Father John and I will be in church this Friday, June 19, from 10am to 12noon, and from 4pm to 6pm for all who would like to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. One change, however, is that we will use the sacristies - the rooms where we get ready for Mass, to the right and left of the altar, instead of the confessional boxes in the back— so that we can maintain your privacy and also give one another that six foot separation that we are now obliged to observe.

I hope you received the mailing sent to all of our registered parishioners ten days ago. Additional copies are available for you to take in the rectory and vestibule, and that information is also posted on our parish website - www.saintteresasi.org— as is this weekly bulletin. A few Sundays ago, as we were nearing the end of the Easter season and our daily Mass readings from the Acts of the Apostles, I offered you chapter 27, which descr ibed the hazardous sea voyage of Saint Paul, when he was a prisoner chained to a soldier on his way to trial in Rome. We ran out of space at the point where Paul was being shipwrecked. Here is the rest of his story, as told by Saint Luke in chapter 28 of the Acts of the Apostles.

1 Once we had reached safety we learned that the island was called Malta. 2 The natives showed us extraordi-nary hospitality; they lit a fire and welcomed all of us because it had begun to rain and was cold. 3 Paul had gath-ered a bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the fire when a viper, escaping from the heat, fastened on his hand. 4 When the natives saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “This man must certainly be a murderer; though he escaped the sea, Justice has not let him remain alive.” 5 But he shook off the snake into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 They were expecting him to swell up or suddenly to fall down dead but, after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god. 7 In the vicinity of that place were lands belonging to a man named Publius, the chief of the island. He wel-comed us and received us cordially as his guests for three days. 8 It so happened that the father of Publius was sick with a fever and dysentery. Paul visited him and, after praying, laid his hands on him and healed him. 9 After this had taken place, the rest of the sick people on the island came to Paul and were cured. 10 They paid us great honor and when we eventually set sail they brought us the provisions we needed. 11 Three months later we set sail on a ship that had wintered at the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the Dioscuri as its figurehead. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days, 13 and from there we sailed round the coast and arrived at Rhegium. After a day, a south wind came up and in two days we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers and were urged to stay with them for seven days. And thus we came to Rome. 15 The brothers from there heard about us and came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul gave thanks to God and took cour-age. 16 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS

Dearest Holy Mother, Most Holy Mary, who undo the knots that suffocate your children, extend your merci-

ful hands to me. I entrust to You today this knot. (which you now mention) and all the negative conse-

quences that it provokes in my life. I give you this knot that torments me and makes me unhappy and so impedes me from uniting myself to You and Your Son Jesus, my Savior. I run to You, Mary, Undoer of Knots because I trust you and I know that you never

despise a sinning child who comes to ask you for help. I believe that you can undo this knot because Jesus grants you everything. I believe that you want to undo this knot because you are my Mother. I be-lieve that You will do this because you love me with

eternal love. Thank you, Dear Mother. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me!
