Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,
Today is not just Super Bowl Sunday. Today is 40 days since Christmas - and so we read at Mass about the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. This is from Saint Luke’s Gospel, chap. 2, verses 22 to 40. As was customary for new parents, Joseph and Mary go to Jerusalem to consecrate their child to God and make a thanksgiving offering in the temple. While there, they meet two devout and admirable souls - Simeon and Anna. Perhaps you can identify with the amazement and joy of these “senior citizens” who recognize in the baby Jesus the answer to their prayers. Read it at home with your night prayers.
Given the proximity of February 3 - the feast of Saint Blaise - we will offer the Blessing of Throats at our Sunday Masses today. This will be done with a general blessing as the final prayer of the General In-tercessions: Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat, and from every other illness: in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (We can all use some help to keep colds and flu away!) If you want a blessing with holy candles touching your throat: ask a priest after he greets the people at the end of Sunday Masses. And/or, come to Mass on Monday at 8:30am for the Mass of Saint Blaise.
We probably did not notice, but December 17th was Pope Francis’ 83rd birthday. Four days before - December 13, 2019 - was his Golden Jubilee. That was the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. Being the Successor of St. Peter and the Vicar of Christ on earth, much more could have been made of those milestones throughout the Church, but that was not Francis’ way.
Yet, anyone's anniversary is a time to reflect and wonder how you came to be who you are now. So you might be interested in an account in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano of a radio interview in which Pope Francis talked about the day he became convinced of his priestly vocation:
"It was September 21 - I always remember this. I went out for a walk with some friends and I passed the Iglesia de Flores. I went inside the church. I felt I had to enter. There are things that you feel inside and you do not really know what they are. It was dark, perhaps 9am, and I saw a priest coming. I didn't know him; he wasn't from that church. He sat down in the confessional, facing the altar. Then I do not know what happened to me. I felt like somebody had grabbed me from inside and was taking me to the confessional. Of course I told him about things regarding me. I confessed, but I don't know what happened...but there I felt that I had to become a priest. I was certain of it."
Next Sunday, February 9, our second collection will be the annual Peter's Pence collection for the good works and charities of our Holy Father. Please be generous, as you always are. Being Pope has not been easy for Pope Francis. Even fictional accounts of the conclave that elected him show him as a man who did not seek or want this responsibility. He had his return ticket to Argentina, and expected to use it.
On this subject: people ask me what I think of the movie, THE TWO POPES. I am neither a movie critic nor Vatican insider, but I can tell you two things. First, l enjoyed watching it. Second, it is “Baloney, Brilliantly Acted.” That was the succinct headline in the Brooklyn Tablet by columnist George Weigel several weeks ago. Weigel has written a comprehensive biography of Pope John Paul II, and he met the future Pope Benedict and Pope Francis in the 1980’s. Here are some of his judgments about the movie: * “It is baloney on steroids. It is brilliantly acted, sometimes amusing, but not historically accurate.” * There are grave misrepresentations of the dynamics at the conclave of 2005. Cardinal Ratzinger re-sisted the efforts of admirers to push him to be Pope, and accepted only when it was clearly God’s will. * ”There was no consensus among the electors in 2013 that the church needed a decisive shift from the previous Popes to ‘catch up with the world.’ That is rubbish. Proponents of Cardinal Bergoglio saw him as a tough-minded reformer who would clean house and focus the church on the New Evangelization that is really what is needed in every part of the church today.” To which I say, Amen! (And: THE END.)

A PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK
For those who serve in our nation’s military, and for police officers, firefighters and rescuers who rush to protect and defend us, let us pray to the Lord...
REQUEST AND THANKS FROM CARDINAL DOLAN
As we embark on this new decade, together in faith, I invite us to remember the mission to which we are all called. It is the task of every generation to take the faith that we have received and share it with others. This is what the Lord calls us to do: to teach, to serve, and to sanctify the world, by proclaiming the truth and making disciples of all nations.
This work is most effectively accomplished through the ministry of the Church – in our parishes, our schools, our religious orders, our seminaries, and the many charitable services that are designed to respond to the evolving needs of our communities. This is the work that the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Ap-peal makes possible through your generous donations. The Cardinal’s Appeal is our faith at work in the world, attesting to who we are and the values we repre-sent. I am grateful to you because I know that your gift not only changes lives. It opens hearts to the person of Jesus Christ, as only acts of service performed in His holy name can do. Therefore I ask for and thank you for your support of our 2020 Cardinal’s Annual Stew-ardship Appeal that is now getting underway.
The winner of our December 50/50 Drawing was Ms. Delores Johnson. The prize was $243. If you would like to participate in this monthly activity that benefits our parish and makes people happy,
look for the 50/50 envelopes in the vestibule. The next drawing will be at the end of January.

Kobe Bryant, 41, a lifelong Catholic who is widely considered one of the greatest basket-ball players of all time, died on Sunday January 26 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, also died in the crash. Earlier in the morning they had prayed in their parish church. Bryant is survived by his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters. Kobe Bryant was raised Catholic. He had become more involved in his faith in recent years. According to an article by Greg Richter on Newsmax, the Bryants were said to regularly attend an Orange County parish. Years ago, Bryant credited a Catholic priest with providing the guidance he needed in the wake of a 2003 incident in which he was charged with sexual assault. Bryant said the circumstances were consensual. Although the charges were eventually dropped, Bryant realized he needed to make changes in his life. Bryant said it was a priest who helped him to make some important personal realizations during the ordeal, according to a 2015 interview in GQ Magazine. He told the publication he had fear of being sent to prison. “The one thing that really helped me during that process—I’m Catholic, I grew up Catholic, my kids are Catholic—was talking to a priest,” Bryant said in the interview. “It was actually kind of funny. He looks at me and says, ’Did you do it?’ And I say, ’Of course not.’ Then he asks, ’Do you have a good lawyer?’ And I’m like, ’Uh, yeah, he’s phenomenal.’ So then he just said, ’Let it go. Move on. God’s not going to give you anything you can’t handle, and it’s in his hands now. This is something you can’t control. So let it go.’ And that was the turning point,” Bryant said.
