From the pastor… Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – In today’s first reading, the Word of the Lord says “Here is your God…the eyes of the blind will be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then will the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst forth in the de-sert”. In 1913 the National Weather Service recorded the high-est temperature in the United States; it was 134 degrees in Death Valley, California. Death Valley is located in an arid and barren desert and got its’ name in 1849 by 18 survivors of a group of 30 people who were looking for a short cut to the gold fields of California. Around 1998, the weather phenomenon El Nino brought torrential rains to Death Valley and the desert floor was robed with the most beautiful flowers of various colors. A greater fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy (“the ears of the deaf will be cleared, then the tongue of the mute will sing.”) comes to pass in today’s Gospel, when Jesus cured the deaf-mute. Jesus put his finger into the man’s ear and said “Ephphatha!” that is “be opened!” In the Sacrament of Bap-tism, the priest or deacon blesses the ears and the mouth of the baby with these words “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father.” May we also be opened to receive His word and proclaim the faith. Next weekend is the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Isaiah 50:5-9; James 2: 14-18; Mark 8: 27-35. To our volunteer Faith Formation Teachers and to our Faith Formation Directors, Mary Brown & Norma Echevarria a huge and sincere THANK YOU! Thanks also to all those who worked so hard to put together the Festival of Tables this weekend and also to all those who turned out in support of this fun social event. The Parish Pastoral Council will meet this Monday, Septem-ber 10th at 7 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Room. This Council is advisory to the pastor and is a big help in decisions concerning the future direction of our parish. The different par-ish organizations are represented and you are also invited to participate by representing our parishioners. If interested, please speak with me, your pastor. BINGO r eturns to our Par ish Hall next Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The cash prizes are $25, $50, and $100. Hot dogs, liquid libations and snacks are available. Come join in the fun and support our Forward With Christ building project. The Knights of Columbus will hold their annual Spaghetti Dinner next Sunday afternoon, from 4-6 p.m. in our Social Hall. You can eat in or take it to go. Support our Knights who sup-port our parish. The Priest Retirement Collection – will be taken up at the 2nd collection next weekend. With the current scandals, this collec-tion may be challenging. This collection is not to support the priests who have been laicized, but rather for those who have faithfully served Christ and His Church. Please be extra-generous. Our assessment this year is $14,211, which is $108. more than last year. Thanks for your sacrificial generosity
