From the pastor..

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – The Wheat and the weeds – The Encarta Encyclopedia says that Louie Daniel Armstrong (1901-1971) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in dire poverty and did not attend school beyond the fifth grade. His father abandoned the family about the time of Armstrong’s birth and he was raised by his mother in the urban slums of New Orleans. As a youth, Armstrong joined a vocal quartet and sharpened his musical ear for harmony by sing-ing with a group on the streets. From about 1912 to 1914 he was incarcerated for delinquency at the Colored Waifs Home in New Orleans, where he was given a cornet to play in the home’s brass band. While there, he learned the cornet and other musical instru-ments and dedicated himself to becoming a professional musi-cian. As a result of his upbringing, Louie Armstrong could have been depressed and inclined to sing about the woes of his life – but he didn’t – in New York on August 16th, 1967, Louie recorded the most popular What A Wonderful World. As children of God, in spite of the weeds in our field of life, shouldn’t we Catholic Christians, having witnessed God’s creat-ing and merciful hand, be able to sing the same and also to know that the best is yet to come – in eternal life.

Next Sunday is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Readings at Mass will be taken from: 1 Kings 3:5,7-12, Romans 8:28-30, Matthew 13:44-52 (short form 13:44-46). Congratulations to Dr. & Mrs. Renato & Maria DioQuino who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and will re-ceive a special blessing at the 10:30 a.m. Mass this Sunday. If you are celebrating a golden anniversary, we’d be glad to acknowledge you as well, especially in these days when commit-ment isn’t so fashionable.

The normal Daily Mass schedule, Monday through Fr iday, will resume this week. THREE IMPORTANT MEETINGS THIS WEEK - Planning & Building Committee -Monday, July 24th, 7 p.m. in the K of C Room - Finance Council -Wednesday, July 26th, 7 p.m. in Room 6 - Liturgy Committee – Thursday, July 27th, 7 p.m. in the K of C Room

Thanks to those who worked so hard to plan and organize the CHRISTMAS IN JULY CRAFT FAIR that will be held in our Social Hall and Gathering Space next Saturday, July 29th, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.. We pray that you the parishioners will find the time to support the vendors and make this a worthwhile endeavor for our Forward With Christ building initiative. Are you interested or curious about possibly becoming a Catholic? Now is the time to call me (Fr . Kessler – 704-681-4860) so as to inquire about the RCIA Class which will be form-ing at the end of August. I will meet with you personally and privately to discuss your questions, etc. Don’t be bashful nor wait until the last minute. Forward With Christ update – So far we have $2,017,890.74 in the bank and are short $482,109.26 of our 2.5 million dollar goal. Thanks so much for your support and generosity. With God all things are possible.

Mrs. Mary Brown: If you need to contact Mrs. Brown, Faith Formation Director, please call or text 704-929-0152 or email her at [email protected] or if you need to contact Mrs. Norma Echevarria please call the office at 704-872-2579 or email her at [email protected]. Registration forms for 2017-2018 have been handed out to all current Faith Formation students. If you did not get one, please stop by the Faith Formation office. They are located next to the Faith For-mation Office door on orange paper. All forms need to be returned to the faith Formation office by Aug 1st, 2017 to avoid a $10 late fee. Students who plan on making their Confirmation and First Commun-ion need 2 years of Faith Formation classes prior to those sacrament and must attend at least 25 Masses during each of the school years. It’s not too early to think about volunteering for Faith Formation for the 2017-2018 School Year. The new Faith and Life series is ter-rific. All lessons are planned and related worksheets are always pre-pared often with a craft that corresponds with that week’s lesson. Please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to volunteer for Faith Formation. The future of St. Philip’s is a direct result of how well we prepare our young people. It’s not always easy, but it is al-ways worthwhile. What would happen to the Catholic Faith if there were no Faith Formation teachers to pass it on???? Please contact Mary Brown if you think you may be interested and we can talk. There will be 2 Faith Formation volunteer meetings, Wednesday, Aug 30th @ 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, August, 31st @ 6:30 p.m. Faith Formation volunteers should make plans to attend one of these meetings. If you cannot attend a meeting, please contact Mary Brown at the information above. Christmas Pageant Planning Meeting: It’s that time again. We will have the first planning meeting on Thursday, Sept 7 @ 6:30 p.m. in the social hall. Everyone is welcomed to attend. The Christmas Pag-eant will be Sunday, Dec 17th at 3:00 p.m. followed by a holiday treat reception. Children and adults are invited to participate. This is a great way for Confirmation students to get service hours. Please text or email Mary Brown if you have any ideas or questions.
