From the pastor… Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time What is a common denominator of today’s three readings? In the first reading (1 Kings 19:9, 11-13) Elijah the prophet is di-rected to leave the shelter of the cave and he is exposed to the elements – first mighty winds, then an earthquake followed by a fire and in the elements Elijah finds the Lord in a gentle breeze. Elijah’s role as a prophet was to restore TRUE faith. In Roman’s 9:1-5 Israel’s unbelief and its rejections of Jesus as savior aston-ished and puzzled Christians. Paul addresses himself to the essen-tial question of how the divine plan could be frustrated by Israel’s unbelief. As a result Paul says “I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart”. Then in the Gospel (Matthew 14: 22-33) we find the disciples on the Sea of Galilee, being tossed around by stormy weather with strong head winds and big waves. A com-mon denominator in all three readings is that dur ing their turbulent times God was with Elijah, Paul and the Disciples. Je-sus reassures the disciples as he does us – Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid. On a daily basis and especially during the storms of life, look for the Lord Jesus in the subtleties, like the gentle breeze. He’ll make sure that you know his presence and then you too can be at peace as you declare with the disciples “Truly, you are the Son of God”. Next Saturday is August 15th and the Feast of the Assump-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since it falls on a Saturday this year the Feast is not a Holy Day of obligation. Next Sunday is the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Isaiah 56:1,6-7, Ro-mans 11:13-15,29-32, and Matthew 15:21-28. The Parish Youth Group will meet this Sunday evening in the new Social Hall from 6-8 p.m. Please remember to bring you History of Health Form. Parents are reminded to please pick up their teenager promptly at 8 p.m. Thank you. The Parish Finance Council will meet this Monday evening, August 10th, at 6:30 in the new Social Hall. The Knights of Columbus will meet this Thursday, August 13th in the new Social Hall. The Installation of Officers will take place next Saturday, August 15th in the New Social Hall. Last call to join the RCIA Pr ogram and to learn more about the Catholic Faith. This program is for potential converts as well as for baptized Catholics (18 years old and older) who nev-er received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Eucharist or were not Confirmed. Please call Raquel, the Director of the RCIA, at 704-880-7940 or Fr. Kessler at 704-681-4860 or the parish office at 704-872-5287. The first gathering will be on Wed., August 26th from 6:45-8:15 p.m. Should we continue Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacra-ment fr om 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the first Fr iday of the month? Of course we should – but this depends on parishioners coming forth & making a commitment to spend 1 hour with the Lord in this beautiful time of prayer and devotion. The Lord Jesus cannot and will not be left alone on the altar. Planning is important - Now is the time when these arrangements need to be made if this devotion is to continue during the winter months, beginning in September. Please contact Mr. Randy Franz at 828-632-1976 or call the parish office – 704-872-2579. Sign-up forms can be found on the table at the entrance of the church. Hopefully, this devotion will continue. July’s Food Closet Donations of $1,226 wer e sent to Yokefel-low Ministry of Great Statesville. Your generosity to the poor is quite impressive, especially during these challenging times. The Forward With Christ Building Campaign – continues to move forward. Presently, we have $1,150,734.16 in the bank. Thanks for your sacrificial offerings.
