SECOND COLLECTION – Next Weekend

Good Shepherd Collection for Retired Priests Retired priests of the Diocese of Erie receive monthly a pension from the Retirement fund and if they participated in Social Security another smaller monthly check. They use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. The

skyrocketing cost for medical services, prescription drugs, long-term care and gaps in Medicare coverage have resulted in some of these priests over the years exhausting their savings for expenses of health care and absolute essentials. Thus, there is a pressing need to support those priests with supplementary assistance with their expenses for non-insured medical and long term care costs. This collection allows each of us to show our gratitude and support of those priests who have cared for our spiritual needs in the past in the diocese and here at Good Shepherd: Fr. Howard King and Msgr. Robert Malene. Please be as generous as you can.

INVITATION TO VOCALS & MUSICIANS The Contemporary Music Ministry of 11:30 Mass is seeking those interested in sharing their musical abilities. Vocals of all ranges and especially stringed musicians welcomed. If interested, please contact Greg Hansley at 724-301-2228.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

FROM OUR PASTOR “They recounted what had taken place on the way (to Emmaus) and how they had come to know him in the breaking of the bread.” Today’s story comes on the heels of the “Road to Emmaus” story in Luke’s gospel and the names of the two disciples are not given, but it indicates they were not part of the original twelve. In today’s story we have more examples of how the disciples are dejected and fearful. In fact, these two had met the risen Jesus as they were going from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. They were going away from the community of believers, convinced that “it was all over” after Jesus’ death. Posing as a fellow traveler, Jesus had revealed himself to them in the scriptures and in the breaking of the bread. In today’s passage, Jesus now opens the minds of the Eleven to understand the Old Testament prophecies which are fulfilled in him. Like last Sunday’s story about Thomas in John’s gospel, Luke emphasizes the reality, a transformed reality of Jesus’ physical body. Jesus suddenly “appears” in their midst, speaks to them, and shows his wounds from the nails. He can be touched; he eats; he is not a ghost. Both the first reading and the gospel today stress the importance of the role of apostles and disciples as “witnesses,” as those who testify to what they have seen and heard pertaining to Jesus of Nazareth. It’s what sponsors, family, Confirmation class teachers and our whole parish have to say about our just Confirmed high school students and RCIA candidates…they have joined us as witnesses. The scriptures today call us to reflect on our own experiences of Christ, for how can we witness to him if we have not experienced him? Where do we meet him? How do we know him? Our witness will be authentic only to the extent that our experience is real. S P A G H E T T I D I N N E R starting at noon Sunday, and ending at 4:00 pm with the gigantic gift basket raffle, our annual Spaghetti Dinner will take place in the Social Hall. All proceeds benefit the Religious Education program. Adult dinners/ $9.00 & children under 12/ $4.00. CONGRATULATIONS to the members of our Juniors who were Confirmed by Bishop Persico last Sunday at Notre Dame, and to Ryan Onestak who was Confirmed by Bishop Zubik at St. Camillius in New Castle this past Thursday. Jr/Sr Hi Retreat – next Sunday, April 22. All teens are to attend the 9 am Mass. They’ll leave after Mass for the retreat at the James Family Farm, 1756 Millbrook Rd., Grove City and return to the church by 4 pm. Retreat facilitator, Bob Summers. Theme: “A Relationship With Jesus”. Continental breakfast & lunch will be served. Drivers & parent volunteers are still needed! Thank You! After many years of faithful, melodious service to us, Terry Whalen recently submitted a resignation from his service here at Good Shepherd. We’re grateful for his work on the Liturgy Committee and in the Music Ministry.
