Overview To introduce individual and class incentives. To reinforce classroom routines, rules, and consequences. To foster responsibility and enthusiasm within the classroom, creating a positive learning environment.

Education Standards Addressed1) Use feelings and behavior appropriately in classroom situations.(Personal & Social)2) Develop social interactions. (Personal & Social)

Objectives

1) Students will understand consequences of own behavior and follow rules and routines in classroom and other settings.2) Students will make transitions between activities.3) Students will be able to delay personal gratification until appropriate time.4) Students will respect feelings, rights, and belongings of others.5) Students will cooperate in small and large group activities.

Information

1) Review rules set (by students and teacher) on the first day of school.(See attached)2) Discuss reasons/need for having rules. (Other people/places who/that have rules necessary to make things work.)3) Discuss “Our Day” schedule which is posted in the front of the classroom, depicting a picture for each subject, special, and activity (prayer,lunch,bathroom,dismissal,etc.). 4) Class incentives for positive behavior (“Mystery Person” & Melvin the Monkey)5) Stop signs given for not following classroom rules.

Assessment/Verification ▪ Observation of students’ participation/answering questions regarding routines and rules.▪ Observation of students’ level of enthusiasm and excitement in reaching goal and following rules and routines.

Reflection

▪Students actively participated in group discussion regarding our class rules and displayed an understanding of the need for rules elsewhere (sports’ teams, Mom & Dad at work, home, community, school, etc.).▪The stop signs (a simple piece of paper) have been extremely effective. Students have been remorseful and admit that it is “no fun” to sit for five minutes during center time.▪The “Mystery Person” Jar is a HIT!!! Each child’s name is written on popsicle stick inside the jar. Each morning, a stick is drawn from the jar. Students are reminded that, “It could be you!” If, at the end of the day, the “Mystery Person” does not have a stop sign and has followed our rules and routines, they choose a prize from our treasure box. As an added kick, I ask, “Was it hard to be the ‘Mystery Person’?” The student then gets to push the “Easy Button”, which plays, “That was easy!”▪Melvin the Monkey is moving his way toward the coconut tree. Melvin moves each time the students are demonstrating “team work” and following our rules and routines. The children are excited when Melvin swings from his vine, because when he reaches the coconut tree, they will choose a coconut and be awarded a class prize. Each coconut (balloon) is filled with a prize ticket (movie & popcorn party, trip to the playground, play a fun game, etc.). Once prize is attained, I will begin another similar class incentive! • I believe I will change the classroom incentive to include the object (monkey, etc.) moving

backward for lack of following classroom rules and routines.• I also plan on adding a “Reflection Center” within the next month or so. When a child receives

three stop signs, he/she must complete a “Reflection” paper in which they draw a picture and “write” what behavior was inappropriate, how it made others feel, and what they will do instead of this in the future.

• I truly believe that using visual aids has enhanced the students’ understanding of our classroom routines and rules.
