The theme for the 13th Clonmel Junction Festival is The Journeys We Make. Life itself is, of course, the great journey, but therein we make many other journeys, both big and small. It is the artists among us that have, throughout the ages, captured these experiences and shared them with us, thereby enhancing the world we live in and our understanding of it. For ten days in July we will have a wealth of artists in Clonmel responding to this theme. Some, like 1927, HotForTheatre and Fishamble come to Clonmel with much lauded shows which tell of particular journeys. Others have been working with the Festival over many months preparing special one-off performances.

The Festival itself represents for us, the Junction Festival team, the climax of our annual journey of planning and preparation. This years journey has been particularly exciting as we have been engaged in producing three Feature Events, which involve input from both established international artists and from local creative players. These projects, Madisons Descent, We Can Be Heroes and The Banna Chluain Meala High Wire Spectacular have been journeys in themselves and we are anticipating with trepidation and excitement the realisation of many months of hard work by all the participants

These collaborations and the many partnerships, which the Festival has created locally, nationally and internationally, are the foundations on which this marvelous annual event is built. It has been my pleasure this year to once again sit on the board of Junction Festival for the duration of my mayoral term, having represented the Borough Council for two years when it was first set up back in 2004. Since those early days the organisation has matured and the event become an established landmark in the towns calendar, attracting visitors and offering the people of the town and region an annual feast of music and theatre. I would like to offer my appreciation to the funders, particularly the Arts Council, who have supported the Festival over the years, and to the local businesses and individuals who, contribute to the ongoing success of the event.

A measure of the impact the Festival has had on the town can be seen in the wealth of local talent participating in this years event. I also heartily welcome to town all the visiting artists form Ireland and abroad. It is particularly pleasing to see Mchel Silleabhin and Paul Walsh, who were both born here, and are now established International artists, coming back to share the wealth of their knowledge with local artists and their talent with us, the public. I wish the Festival the very best for 2013 and look forward to its continued success for many years to come.

The trainee scheme has been in place since 2010 and enables passionate young people from 14 years up to participate in the caf projects, marketing or production. A typical trainee schedule will include one daily four-hour slot from the 1st to 14th July and involve induction and first hand access to an experienced specialist in the chosen field.

The learning process is guaranteed to be rewarding as trainees get to meet new people, observe and assist professionals at work, partake in challenging activities, improve their social and communication skills and acquire new knowledge in the selected field. A 35 registration fee entitles trainees to a Festival T-shirt, access to theatre shows based on last minute availability, and a discount at the Festival canteen.

TrAINEE SChEME

Witness the extraordinary feat of skill when English circus performer Christopher Bull undertakes to walk across a 60m high wire stretching across the majestic River Suir. His daring feat will form the thrilling finale to a performance by Clonmels magnificent marching and concert band Banna Chluain Meala, and will be accompanied by a choreographed display by the bands Colour Guard across Gas House Bridge.

Bones: Bu Bolg youth Arts groupInspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, this piece was devised with the help of Chanti Hobbit and Christopher Bull (our intrepid high wire walker). Bones fuses elements of circus and performance, addressing issues of life and death, and celebrating the lives of loved ones lost. Bu Bolg is delighted to have the support of the Arts Council Young Ensemble Scheme in presenting this show, which consists of a procession culminating in a finale of dance, music and circus lasting approximately 25 minutes. For the Clonmel performance, members of the Junction Joes, the Festivals emerging youth ensemble, have been invited to participate as guest performers. The procession will leave The Common Thread Caf on Parnell Street at 7pm, arriving in Denis Burke Park for a 7.30pm performance.

The Man on the Wire: Christopher Bull Circus performer Christopher Bull has been walking tight ropes for 5 years, performing at festivals across Europe including the legendary Glastonbury Festival. It was in Cuba that Christopher began to learn the funambulists arts, which soon became the highlight of his performance. Christophers first big walk was a cable 20m high wire over a courtyard with a 600 strong screaming crowd below. Since then, the journey to perform higher, longer, more daring feats has persisted. This will be his maiden river crossing.

The Band: Banna Chluain MealaSince 1970, Banna Chluain Meala have been an integral part of the musical life of Clonmel. The senior band, which each year wins new awards at band competitions around Ireland and overseas, currently has over 60 members. This year the band and their Colour Guard, who are preparing for an overseas visit to Italy in July, will premiere their new repertoire during the High Wire Spectacular, working closely with Christopher Bull and the Junction Festival team.Special thanks to South Tipperary Civil Defense, Clonmel Swimming Pool & Clonmel Canoe Club

A Masque in Ten MovementsFor Solo Voice, Choir, Piano, Soprano Saxophone, and Chamber Orchestra.

Madisons Descent, Mchel Silleabhans Masque in Ten Movements, was inspired by Page Allens book of the same name. For the European premiere of this work, Clonmel native OSilleabhin has been working closely with the Junction Festival Choir and guest conductor Fergus Sheil, soprano Claudia Boyle, saxophonist Kenneth Edge and the 14 piece Carolan Chamber Orchestra. This 60 minute choral work will be preceded by a piano recital by Silleabhin, with the Carolan Chamber Orchestra, of some of his most popular compositions.This concert is being recorded for RT Lyric FM for future broadcast

Mchel Silleabhin was born in Clonmel and studied with composers Aloys Fleishmann and Sen Riada. As first Chair of Music, University of Limerick, he founded the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. He has made many recordings with the Irish Chamber Orchestra (Virgin/EMI), was awarded an Honorary D.Mus from UCC.

Fergus Sheil is one of Irelands leading conductors. Artistic director of Wide Open Opera, he conducted the acclaimed production of Tristan und Isolde in Dublin in 2012.

Claudia Boyle, one of the most sought after sopranos from these shores, appeared at Wexford Opera Festival as La Comtesse (La Cour de Climne), performed at Komische Opera Berlin as Konstanze (Die Entfhrung aus dem Serail) and with the Philharmonia Orchestra as Hanna Glawari (The Merry Widow).

Saxophonist Kenneth Edge was the original saxophonist for Riverdance and solo clarinetist for the 1st Broadway production The Pirate Queen. John Buckley composed his Concerto for Alto Sax and String Orchestra for Kenneth.

The Way Home Exhibition is an exhibition of works drawn from the Crawford Art Gallery Collection, Cork which include landscapes, seascapes and scenes from Irish life, around the theme of Irish People and Place. Artists featured in the exhibition include: William Crozier, Gerard Dillon, Norah McGuinness, Daniel ONeill, Patrick Scott, Camille Souter, Fred Archer, Donald Teskey, Maurice MacGonigal, Barrie Cooke, Sylvia Cooke-Collis, Patrick Collins, Sean McCarthy, Stella Frost and Evie Hone.

Caf Conversations/Meet the Artist

Artist Page Allen, author and illustrator of Madisons Descent, will give a pre-concert talk on her work (see also pg 13). The story of Madisons Descent began when artist Page Allens sister gave birth to her first baby, Madison. Standing in the birthing room at dawn, in wonder, it seemed to Page as if this baby had completed a long journey. She had arrived, not only in her body, but in her self. Allen went on to write and illustrate Madisons Descent, the book, which in turn was the inspiration for Mchel Silleabhins composition.

The Junction Festival ChoirThe Junction Festival Choir, a 30 strong choir comprised of the best voices in South Tipperary, first came together in 2010 to perform a concert with French chanteuse Caroline Moreau. The choir re-formed in 2011 to perform a Schubert Mass and a Highlights of the Opera concert under the baton of Austrian Conductor Elizabeth Attl. In 2012, Ms Attl returned to conduct a concert of secular and sacred choral pieces, which included a piece by fellow Austrian, Wolfgang Sauseng. The composer has since been commissioned by Junction Festival, with the help of an Arts Council Commissioning Grant, to compose a choral suite based on the All Souls poem by Tipperary poet Michael Coady, which will premiere at Junction Festival in 2015.

Songs that make you feel you could be a Hero if only just for one dayWe Can Be Heroes will celebrate the rock legends of the last 40 years with a medley of classics from bands like The Rolling Stones, The Cars, The Jam, and of course, the currently much in vogue David Bowie.

15 of the most exciting young Clonmel rock musicians, including the talented emerging voices of Eoin Hally, Ruairi de Leastar and Kate Twohig will be working with rock musician and producer Gavin Glass, creating an unforgettable evening for the 2013 Junction Festival. Glass and the young musicians will be joined by special guests Paul Walsh (Royseven) and the magnificent mustached maestro Jerry Fish as MC, bringing a carnival flavour to the proceedings.

Expect a big sound from a full band, with brass and strings and a thrilling set of classics, all blended with some original music by the emerging and established artists. Look forward to a fantastic evening of rock on a big stage against the stunning backdrop of Clonmels medieval walls

Ruby Sessions is an acoustic club that has been running for over 14 years every Tuesday night in the intimate setting of Doyles of College Street, Dublin. Its legendary status is well earned having hosted the likes of Ed Sheeran, Paulo Nutini, Mumford & Sons, Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Paul Brady, James Blunt, and Rodrigo y Gabriela, to name but a few.For Junction Festival, Ruby Sessions are making one of their rare forays out of the city. In the intimate surroundings of the upstairs room at the Donoughmore Club, four breaking acts will perform. Selected by Ruby Sessions from among the best of recent performances, it promises to be a special night for music lovers. An afternoon performance of the best of the We Can Be Heroes

concert. This performance is strictly an alcohol free event.

A panel of experts representing key areas of the popular music industry will each present a short outline of the work they do and the role they can play in assisting young musicians to negotiate early career opportunities. The panel will include Sinead Troy (Irish Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors), Ed Smith (Today FM Producer for Paul McCloone), Alan Cullivan (BIM Music College and former manager of The Thrills), Steve Ready (First Music Contact and Breaking Tunes), Keith Johnson (IMRO). The clinic will allow plenty of time for those attending to ask questions of the experts, and will finish with a session at which bands can get feedback on their recordings from the panel who might offer useful tips on making the next moves.

Dublin based 3epkano have established themselves as one of the finest music ensembles in the country, composing and performing original scores for the great silent movies of the 1920s and 1930s. For many years they have been regular performers at Kilkenny Arts Festival, for which they created the soundtrack for Der Golem (1920) - which incorporates the exceptional vocals of Internationally renowned sen ns singer Iarla OLonaird.

In the Jewish ghetto in 16th Century Prague, the community leader and astrologer, Rabbi Lw, foresees doom for his people. He creates a forbidding clay golem that he brings to life with the assistance of a demon spirit.

Initially the Golem does nothing but good, but things change after Lws assistant, Famulus, uses the creature to win the affections of the Rabbis daughter, Miriam. Famulus tries to return the Golem to rest, but fails, allowing the enraged creature to embark on a trail of destruction.

Der Golem is a must-see for lovers of German Expressionist cinema, as well as the perfect introduction to this classic era of film-making for the uninitiated. A forerunner of Frankenstein and inspiration for many classic horror moviemakers this is a rare treat for film fans and music lovers.

Why WE ChOSE ThIS pIECE

We have been big fans of 3epkanos work for many years and jumped at the chance to programme a package that includes one of the all time great classic horror movies, one of the most innovative and exciting bands working in Dublin, and the national treasure that is Iarla OLonaird.

A double bill of world class traditional musicians from Ireland and North Africa. Both will perform their concert set and come together for a magnificent finale, fusing traditions.

We were introduced to Ghalia by colleagues working in Cairo, who all enthused about her stunning stage presence and generosity as a performer. Having already been in contact with Frankie Gavin about performing at the Festival, we approached him about doing a double bill and he responded enthusiastically. We are very excited to see what these two world class performers will do when they play together!

Frankie Gavin & De Dannan are legends in the traditional Irish music world. Frankie himself is one of the most celebrated Irish fiddle players of all time, having performed and recorded with rock legends The Rolling Stones, jazz legend Stephane Grappelli and world renowned violinist Sir Yehudi Menuhin, amongst many others. After 33 years, 14 albums and a number of changes in the line up, the group disbanded in 2003 reforming afresh with new energy to form a De Dannan of the 21st century. The new line up is led by original member and leader Frankie Gavin, with Barry Brady, Colm OCaoimh, Paul ODriscoll and Michelle Lally on lead vocals. Ghalia Benali is one of the most exciting female vocalists to have emerged from North Africa in recent years. Now based in Belgium, Ghalia performs regularly in Europe, the US and North Africa, where she has a particularly strong connection with Egypt. She is accompanied to Ireland by two Egyptian musicians Ayman Mabrouk on percussion and Ayman Asfour on violin, with whom she has been working on an exciting new repertoire. Ghalia is renowned across the Middle East for her fluid voice and hypnotic compositions, which are imbued with multi-layered meanings.

Grace Wells, Mark Roper, Dave Lordan & Mia Gallagher, four leading writers from Irelands world of poetry and prose, will come to Clonmel for 24 hours. During their stay in the town, they will share their skills with emerging writers and poetry enthusiasts, perform their work at set readings, and walk and explore the streets of Clonmel with workshop participants, giving insights into how a writer goes about their work, and develops their skills of observation and composition.

Following on last years inaugural series of talks, The Common Thread Caf is hosting a new series in its recently revamped space with people whose journey has taken them physically, emotionally and spiritually on a voyage of discovery to distant regions and unexpected places. The guests comprise a wide spectrum of interests and professions, all with a fascinating story to tell.

To mark its fourth year in business, the caf is hosting an art exhibition on the theme of The Journeys We Make to coincide with this years Junction Festivals theme. Featuring painting, print, photography and installation by Paul Bokslag, Martina Coady, Tony Cross, Theresia Guschlbauer, Anto Kelly, Lyn Mather, Ross Moylan, Brigid Teehan and Astrid Walsh.

Come and hear Dr. Alfred Adlers views on life & how we live it at this eve of Festival Adlerian Caf, where the fun of last years event will be recreated.

Grace Wells, who lives in Tipperary, is an award-winning poet and childrens author. Her debut poetry collection, When God Has Been Called Away to Greater Things, won the 2011 Rupert and Eithne Strong Best First Collection. Grace appeared at Junction Festival in 2012 with Mark Patrick Hederman in Migrating Mythologies. Waterford poet Mark Roper has, since the publication of his first collection The Hen Ark, established himself as one of the leading poets in the country. He has many publications to his name, his most recent being A Gather Of Shadow, published by Dedalus Press in Autumn 2012.

Dubliner Mia Gallaghers debut novel HellFire was critically acclaimed and received the Irish Tatler Literature Award (2007). In 2012, an extract from her second novel was published in Literary Imagination (OUP). Mia curated The Writing Room in 2009, as part of Junction Festivals first Cafs Carte Blanche series.

Dave Lordan is the first writer to win Irelands three national prizes for young poets, the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Award (2011), the Kavanagh Prize (2005), and the Strong Award (2008). He is a renowned performer of his own work.

24 Little hours is a participatory poetry and prose programme incorporating workshops, walks, conversations, readings and some time to write, all taking place over 24 hours.

ThE MEdIA CAVE: A MULTIMEdIA CAF ThE gArdEN MENAgErIE

Multimedia is very much the buzz word at the moment, but what exactly does it mean? You can come and find out in The Media Cave, where you will be immersed in a combination of content formsaudio, still images, performance, animation, videoall trying to collaborate and interact with each other.

For this caf space, Clonmel artist Maurice Caplice, (Sound Lab Caf 2011), will be joined by Nill ODwyer, a multimedia artist whose work focuses on the exploration of interactive public spaces. For the caf, they will be devising a multi screen installation which will be responsive to public interventions, evolving and changing with each new encounter.

The Media Cave will include an assortment of recorded, played, displayed equipment and processing devices as well as video and collaborative graff exhibits. Members of the public will be able to interact and consult with the curators, as well as bring their own projects to develop. Once again, trainees will be involved in the setting up and running of the space, giving young adults a unique opportunity to experience and understand many aspects of multimedia.

Maurice Caplice in collaboration with Dj MiSk (a.k.a. Phil Byrne) curated the very popular Sound Lab in Junction Festival 2011, during which the space was a hive of activity with the two artists encouraging, mentoring and recording many musicians, poets and talkers, as well as coaching members of the public keen to know more about sound and recording technologies. Maurice is a practicing artist that works in many contexts and medias.

Nill ODwyer is a visual artist and practice-based researcher at the Arts Technology Research Lab (ATRL), at Trinity College. He is a part-time member of staff at NCAD and an associate fellow of Gradcam. His research at the ATRL investigates possibilities offered by indeterminacy at the meeting-point of computation and live performance, how one can inform the other, and why this is useful in artistic-public spheres.

Performance artist, Regan OBrien, will open the proceedings and DJ MiSk will return to conclude with another great audio mix.

The Garden Menagerie, hosted by Nina Tanis and Fiona Dowling, is the Festivals latest interactive space where children and their parents will be inspired and have lots of fun, while taking part in creative activities. The Garden Menagerie will be divided into several zones, each waiting to be explored, some growing and changing as the week goes on. The zones will include:

The Reading Station - a visually attractive space with a giant blanket and lots of pillows. Step in with shoes off, snuggle up to read out loud or listen to others reading and storytelling.

The Animal Pet Station - a menagerie of 3D animals that will grow during the course of the Festival week. Get busy with Nina and Fiona helping with the building.

The Garden Station - an evolving flower installation made of plastic bottles, real plants, and a multi-sensory corner complete with lights, mobiles, chimes and a small fountain. The Drawing Corner - games for 2 or more, using drawing for exploring... And of course The Dress and Make-up Corner...

Nina Tanis and Fiona Dowling share a passion for art and storytelling, as well as a love of fun and people, and have been working together since they first met in art college in 2000. In their work they like to create unexpected situations for strangers to meet one another and engage playfully and creatively. Both artists share a deep respect for our beautiful planet and are enthusiastic about growing food, recycling, reusing and celebrating the beauty of the environment. Past projects include the residency and exhibition 15 days in Finland (Joensuu 2005), Personality Caf (Dublin Fringe Festival 2005 & 2006), StoryHouse (Clonmel Junction Festival 2011), Story Nap (Five Lamps Arts Festival, Dublin, 2011), Why? Cause thats the way it is! (ESOF Dublin City of Science 2012), as well as regular performances with the Story-O collective.

Two exceptional, opinionated women were spotted winking at each other in Crumlin Shopping Centre. Now theyre in a show reluctantly. Defying stereotype, theyre here to share with you something theyve never dared to before. A fresh, human and hilarious piece, I Alice I explores the monumental journey of a most unlikely couple. This is an unflinching and acutely personal love story.

Having originally been performed in Project Arts Centre, the work was restaged in the Dublin Theatre Festival in partnership with Culture Ireland and The Irish Theatre Institute. Since then, it has been presented on the Peacock stage of the Abbey, Irelands National Theatre and toured extensively both in Ireland and abroad. Even before the 2012 Festival was over, we had in mind to invite Pat back this year with Forgotten, a show we had seen five years ago, loved and had certainly not forgotten.


I Alice I is an exceptional piece of work by one of the most exciting emerging voices in the vibrant Dublin theatre scene. We were completely bowled over by it and have been desperate to bring it to Clonmel. We are delighted that it will be part of this years programme.

ThE ShOW

1927s inimitable blend of finely crafted animation with pitch perfect, twisted storytelling, live action and music, has made them one of the most talked about companies in the UK of the last 5 years. They seamlessly synchronize live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation. The Animals and Children took to the Streets comes to Junction Festival for just three performances, following a world premiere at Sydney Opera House in 2010, three sell-out, critically acclaimed London seasons at the National Theatre.

The show takes place in the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed, wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions, a sprawling, stinking tenement block, in which curtain-twitchers and peeping toms live side-by-side, and the wolf is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invites you on a theatrical journey of startling originality.

Paperbelles world is blank and plain and she likes it that way. Shes heard of colour, but would prefer things to stay as they are blank and plain. The colours, on the other hand, want to play games and they want Paperbelle to join in. Paperbelles world is changing will she try to stop it or might she find its not as bad as it first seemed? Paperbelle is an enchanting theatre performance, a gentle and playful exploration of colour set in a magical world of paper. A wonderful introduction to theatre for young audiences.

ThE ShOW

The Musical Menagerie combines the musical imagination of multi-instrumentalist, improviser and composer Boris Hunka, with the skills of renowned puppeteer and actor, Thomas Baker. The result is a magical blend of entertainment and escapism.

Two bored zoo-keepers pass their time reminiscing about the adventures they have had in the job... and so begins the telling of a tall tale about a gibbon who lost his tail. In search of the missing member, the zookeepers encounter exotic animals from far and wide, including Sheridan the Sloth, Imelda the Rhino Hornbill and Gilbert the Gibbon whos lost his groove. The magical musical is told with original songs, including Im a Lean Mean Sleeping Machine, What Did the Dodo Do Do and, The Rainforest Jive to name but a few.

We were immediately won over by 1927 when we saw The Animals and Children took to the Streets in Edinburgh in 2011. Clonmel however had to wait its turn as this fabulous show played sold-out seasons at the National Theatre in London and toured the world. With YouTube viewing figures of over 3,500,000 and rising, 47,000 fans on Facebook and 43,500 followers on Twitter; The Original Rudeboys story is getting bigger by the day. Formed in 2011, this uniquely Irish acoustic hip hop band have performed as special guests to Cheryl Cole, and have played sold out shows with Professor Green and Maverick Sabre. They have toured Australia, Europe and The UK so far this year as special guests to The Script.

If you were not lucky enough to see The Beatles circa 1963, then catching the Rabeats will be the next best thing. They look the part and they sound the part, singing with thick Liverpool accents. Remarkably however they are from Amiens in France, where they are kings of the Tribute scene. On a short visit to Ireland, this floppy haired French Fab Four will play all the greatest hits with a sound that is totally Beatles. A very lively night guaranteed!

Parlour Flames are ex-Oasis guitarist, Bonehead (aka Paul Arthurs) and Manchester-based musician, Vinny Peculiar (aka Alan Wilkes). Their self-produced and self-titled debut album was released in May 2013 and is Boneheads first album release since leaving Oasis in 1999. Described as an eclectic mix of guitar-based pop with a psychedelic twist, fans of Oasis will be in for a big treat.

Kerbdog are an alternative rock band from Kilkenny who formed in 1991 by Cormac Battle (Two FM). Following two albums released on Mercury Records, the band split up in 1998. They reformed in 2005 for a series of occasional one-off performances. Junction Festival is very lucky to have the rare opportunity to welcome these talented guys to the town.

After his sold out performance in Junction Festival 2010, Neil Delamere is making his return to Clonmel. Delamere is one of Irelands leading stand up comedians. His distinct style of seriously sharp, observational humour and hilarious anecdotes makes him a unique and much loved stand up performer. Star of RTs The Panel, BBCs The Blame Game and Michael McIntyres Comedy Roadshow. Dont miss this comedy powerhouse as he delights audiences with an extensive collection of brand new, side-splitting material.

Foil Arms and Hog, the comedy group with the most convoluted name in history, are an Irish comedy trio who perform regularly on the UK and Irish Comedy circuit. They have appeared at numerous international festivals including four consecutive sell out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Sean Finegan (Foil), Conor Mc Kenna (Arms) and Sean Flanagan (Hog) write comedy for TV, radio, media and the stage. Their work includes RTs Under the Influence, Theres Something about Patrick and The Savage Eye. They are regular contributors to radio writing and performing for 98fm, RTs Arena Radio and FM104s Strawberry Alarm Clock.

The Festival Club in The Town Hall Bar will open nightly (except Monday 8th) with a live set by Galway musicians John Conneely (Charis) and Mark OSullivan. Each evening they will invite different musicians to join them for a guest slot. Drawing from a range of jazz, blues, rock and country, Conneely and OSullivan will be kicking up a storm with a little help from their friends.

After the live set, a guest DJ will take to the decks and the party will continue. Find out who the guest musicians and DJs are each night on Facebook and Twitter or just come along and be surprised!

Enjoy fresh air, stunning scenery and good company walking the hills around Clonmel. Led by experienced and trained walkers from Clonmels Peaks Mountaineering Club. These two Saturday walks are an ideal opportunity to discover the hills while enjoying the company of local walkers, Festival goers and visitors.

Celebration and Awareness Event Venue: Grounds of Old St-Lukes Hospital

Times: Friday 12th July, 3 - 5pm

To mark the closing of St. Lukes Hospital, local service users have created a bench and flag installation in the grounds of the hospital called The Speak Easy Green.Join the staff, users and Junction Festival artists to celebrate the unveiling of the installation for two hours of music, art making and refreshments.

CLONMEL JUNCTION FESTIVAL 5th - 14th July 2013

One of the most distinctive features of Junction Festival over the years has been its banner and flag displays, which are made by local children with the help of professional artists, announcing the imminent arrival of Festival. This programme, which has been running since 2002, is made possible by the generous support of Abbott who have been sponsoring it since their move to Clonmel in 2006. This years banner project was designed by artist Lyn Mather and explored different realms, such as the sky, leagues under the sea, the prehistoric world, the micro-world, the world of robots and machines, and the forest. Central to this years banners are a series of hoola-hoops, which have been decorated with colourful and mainly recycled plastics.

From the first art session where the childrens imagination is ignited, to making the banners in small groups, the programme provides a real-life opportunity for cooperation and teamwork, while tapping into the creative potential of childrens imagination. Over the course of three weeks, the children got first hand experience of new techniques and materials under the guidance of Mather and her team of arts workers. The creative outcome of this collaboration will be on display for all to savour on the main streets of Clonmel.

Participating schools: Ballyclerihan N.S., St-Olivers N.S., Gaelscoil Cluan Meala, Rathkeevan N.S, Powerstown N.S., Lisronagh N.S., Clonmel Presentation Primary.
