Collective .1 Design Fair - Pier 57 - May 8th to May 11th, 2013

About Collective .1 DesignCollective is a new design fair in New York City that will present a cohesive, curated selection of contemporary design and historical pieces from galleries around the world. The inaugural edition, Collective .1, will coincide with Frieze New York and the May auctions and take place at Pier 57, a light-filled industrial space between the gallery hub of Chelsea and the vibrant Meatpacking District.

Collective began with a passionate group of designers, curators, collectors and gallerists, who together recognized a need for a new commercial and educational platform for the design collector and connoisseur. With the participation of approximately 25 exhibitors and the avid support of the New York creative community, Collective will present a compelling vision of design today.

About 21st twenty first GallerySince opening in New York in 2008, 21st twenty first Gallery has remained the sole contemporary limited edition furniture gallery of its kind. The gallery upholds a focus on unique and small production artworks which also function as practical possessions. 21st twenty first exhibits furniture, lighting and textiles in a range of materials by master craftsmen whose skill is made evident through the details in each design. After fifteen years in Paris’ St.Germain neighborhood, the established French furniture dealer, Renaud Vuaillat, opened his New York flagship gallery in Chelsea, in the very heart of the creative artist district. Determined to focus his discerning eye on representing only the most intriguing and important designer pieces to be found, Renaud travels the world in search of extraordinary decorative works and Objets D’Arts for display and sale to private clients and interior designers alike.

The gallery maintains a constantly rotating inventory aimed to keep a sense of freshness while never straying from the true tenets of good design and continues to offer design consultancy and advisory services to assist with creating and upholding important collections.

Armelle Benoit - Ceramic Sconces, 2012Hand sculpted, glazed ceramicEach uniqueH 22 x L 17 x W 3 in (55.8 x 43 x 8 cm)

Armelle Benoit’s works oscillate between freedom of pure art and the utilitarian function of a designer’s project: it brings

the spectator back and forth between the different tecniques, different disciplines, and different worlds. Each sconce in this

Francois Corbeau - 2 Door Cabinet, 2012Mirror polished tin, aluminumUnique pieceH 45 x L 30.5 x W 18 in (115 x 77.4 x 45.75 cm)

Francois Corbeau has been a self-taught sculptor since 1983. From the beginning of his career he has been

recognized as an exquisite craftsman, obtaining the Prize of the National Commission for Unesco in 1984 and the Florence Gould Award for Sculpture in Monaco in 1985. His works, large and elaborate, reawaken the traditional

technique of « dinanderie » which require hours and hours of extremely precise work. Corbeau’s materials of choice are tin,

aluminum and graphite.

His pieces become mirrors which reflect the universe of its acquirer.

Fedora Design - Quiz Rug100% wool, chain-stitch Edition of 10H 114 x W 95 in (290 x 241 cm)

Federica Tondato was born in Torino Italy in 1968. She studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London, got a Masters degree in design at the Domus Academy in Milan in addition to a Masters degree in architecture from Columbia University in 1995. Federica has been living in New York for the past 21 years. In 2000 she opened FEDORA DESIGN

designing and producing rugs and tapestries. She considers a carpet to be architecture, although two dimensional it has the

power to project the third dimension thus defining and creating space. The designs are influenced by earth’s topography and patterns hidden in nature both on a microscopic and

macroscopic dimension. These rugs are hand embroidered using the chain stitch technique, in India, and hand knotted in

Nepal.

This piece is part of an edition of BOULON pieces, which includes a stain-less steel coffee table debuting at Collective .1 Design Fair.

Maurice Marty is not confined to one medium and considers himself a sculptor, designer, architect and painter all in one. His

Francois Salem - Lune Vert Table, 2013 Glazed ceramic Edition of 8, each piece unique H 17 x L 21 x W 12 in (43 x 53.3 x 30.4 cm)

French artist, Francois Salem, gained notoriety for his unique ceramic pieces which range from large decorative amphorae and dynamic consoles to sculptural lighting. Many of his hand crafted works are inspired by life from

the depths of the ocean, materialized by opalescent glazes which give a poetic lightness to utilitarian objects.

Saccomanno-Dayot - Yaka D’Or Armchair, 2013Gold resin, fabric Unique piece Signed and datedH 33 x L 32.5 x W 40 in (84 x 82.5 x 102 cm)

Chantal Saccomanno and Olivier Dayot invent and manufacture a strange colony of eccentric pieces of furniture. On their white,

tender skin circulate the meanders of a sophisticated style of drawing.

From chain saw to paint brush... from a piece of wood to the curved, slender chair dressed in black ink. Chantal draws a

rough image of a table or a bed and then Olivier interprets and sculpts, transforming her idea into woodwork covering it with a satinated, rich lacquer film. He produces it and afterwards

entrusts it to her elegant fingers to decorate it with her various motifs. Finally, he refines, puts the finishing touches to the piece

of furniture by adding a film of varnish. It’s a dual step, an ex-change and a music score where they both retain some of the

notes. But when they unite, they compose a complete, melodic musical phrase.

Every piece is unique.

Roland Mellan - Narcisse Mirror, 2012Wood, copper, lacquerEach uniqueD 52.36 x d 49.6 x W 6.69 in (133 x 126 x 17 cm)

Roland Mellan uses a unique, multi-step process for each of his creations. Armoring his sculptures with small sheets

of brass, copper or aluminium which are painstakingly hammered to follow the line of the wood, Mellan then begins to apply complex layers of colored lacquer. The surface is

hand polished to slowly erode through the layers, revealing a decorative carapace singular to each piece.

Mathilde Penicaud - Console, 2012 (detail)Steel, concrete Edition of 3 + 1 APH 35.5 x L 94.5 x W 19.7 in (90 x 240 x 50 cm)

Mathilde Penicaud aims to create formal languages defined by gestures, infusing strong and open conversation into her work

and playing with it to create new forms.Always beginning with steel, the element that will serve as a

guide throughout, she compliments the steel with other com-ponents that nourish the shape or relevant function to create an

overall dynamic piece.Inspired by the meaning of a material in the collective imagi-nation and fueled by its historical use in art and architecture, her furniture line made of steel and concrete is created from

the original rubber mold technique. These molds allow for the subtle convergence of materials that results from such a meth-od. The traditional use of steel as an unseen core, covered by reinforced concrete, has pushed her to expose the steel struc-ture in her work, thereby surfacing an apparent dialog between

the two parts.

Hubert le Gall - Hypnose Sconce, 2013Polished and varnished brass, LEDEdition of 25H 28.75 x L 17.75 in (72 x 45cm)

Hubert le Gall, entirely self-taught, finds inspiration in the Surrealist movement—Dali’s melting clocks, Cocteau and the arm sconces in Beauty and the Beast—and in the art of Max Ernst and elongated forms of Giacometti. His works always posses a balance in the conversation between the design

and the materials used. A sense of playfullness and frivolity pervades all of Le Gall’s furniture, but his work also manages to be sophisticated, thought-provoking and (above all) finely

crafted.

Anne & Vincent Corbiere - Chambery Sling Chair, 2012Iron, oak, hand woven fabric (wool, cotton, linen, metal)Unique pairH 38.5 x L 21 x W 33.5 in (98 x 53.5 x 85 cm)

Anne, from the American northwest, has lived in France for more than 25 years. The time she worked as a costumer in San Francisco, London, and Paris – on projects for Peter Brook, or assisting Chrisitan Lacroix and other designers

– led her to discover a passion for textiles. After training at the Atelier National d’Art Textile in Paris, Anne collaborated

for many years with the Parisian Haute Couture houses (Dior, Lacroix, Chanel, Balenciaga) on exclusive textile

designs, before moving into the interior decorating field with commissions for Peter Marino and Michael Smith, among

other distinguished deocrator/architects.

Vincent grew up in the south of France, immersed in the inspiration of Greek and Gallo-Roman art and architecture. An

initial formal training with the respected French crafts guild, «les Compagnons du Devoir», and years of practicing many

parallel arts (photography, painting, music) forged his skills and his personal vocabulary. One of Vincent’s earliest and most

faithful clients is interior decorator Jacques Grange, but he has also worked with Alberto Pinto, Michael Smith, and others.

Trained as a cabinet maker, Damien Hamon has since branched out to create his own assemblage. His works are inspired by the way light hits the lines of his pieces and the

materials themselves. In 2011, 21st twenty first obtained the Barre Commode, which appears to be a dynamic stack of

white planks until one opens the drawer to expose the stark contrasting ebony within. The Barre Commode is also available

in a black lacquer finish with a light ebony interior.
