Introduction To Confined Spaces

Confined space is potentially dangerous work area, with only restricted openings for entry and exit including any vessel, tank, container, pit, bund, chamber, cellar or any other similar space or area which is enclosed with limited access that can be very dangerous for human entry. Thus, working in an confined space is a fatal.

Such areas are enclosed from entry and exit that often causes hazards and deaths.

6 – Key Characters of Confined Spaces

• Partially or Completely enclosed

• Are not especially designed for continuous human occupancy.

• Are hazardous in nature as their design, construction, location, atmosphere are not for human occurrences.

• Restricted or limitless means of entrance or exit.

• In most confined spaces, supply of air is inadequate for sustaining of life.

• Atmospheric hazards may occur anytime, because of its construction, location or contents, or because of work that has previously happened in it.

According Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA), A permit-required confined space is a space that contains hazards capable of causing death or physical harm.

OSHA estimates that there are 200 to 300 deaths and thousands of injuries every year that occur from working in Confined Spaces. That is why, in January of 1993, OSHA published a new set of regulations on "Permit-required Confined Spaces".

• Understands the nature of the hazards that can occur inside the particular confined space.

• Is immediately available to provide non-entry emergency assistance whenever needed.

• Maintains constant two-way communication with the workers in that confined space.

• Is directly responsible for the work being performed in the confined space

• Select the qualified person competent to provide a hazard means of reducing assessment & safe work procedures.

• Provide entry rescue only after the most stringent precautions taken must be immediately available.

Confined Space poses unique problems, such as the potential for "engulfment" by materials in and around these spaces, toxic or restricted air supply and "entrapment" hazards.

Importance of Confined Space Training

Workers need to know as much as they can know about working in and around them. Thus, It's important the employer provides training so all employees who are required to perform confined space entry operations in a safer manner.
