An interview is a conversation between two or more
people where questions are asked by the interviewer to
elicit facts or statements from the interviewee.
This is commonly used and popular among radio newscast.
It allows you to discover how individuals think and feel
about a topic and why they hold certain opinions
Outside Broadcast refers to any television or radio programme
which is broadcast from a location away from the normal studio
setting. The location doesn't actually have to be out-of-doors —
the "outside" simply means "outside the studio".
This is very popular among radio newscasts
Outside Broadcasts make the audience feel they are actually
their and makes them feel involved as it is live from the scene. It
allows people to hear an event or scene without being there
It is an interview with members of the general
public usually based on one topic
This is a form used through radio news cast
Vox Pop allows the audience to hear other
peoples opinions on another matter
Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing
something.
An example of a convention is theme tune used before the
news programme begins and silence through out the stories.
We went against this convention as we used music through out
our soft news and silence when presenting hard news.
We believe this helps engage the audience as the music helps
create the mood needed for the news e.g. silence when
presenting the news on the protest for UK mosque , it enables
the audience know it is a serious matter.
e.g. upbeat music used when presenting the story on university
fees to show it is light soft news
An example of a convention is having one host present the news
We went against this convention and had two host that both present the news
We believe this enables the audience to be engaged as hearing one persons voice throughout can be off-putting therefore we decided to have two, also by having two hosts shows different types of personalities that the audience can relate to.
There are many conventions that we have kept e.g.
speaking formally
We have kept this as everyone understands this way of
speaking and will not create difficulties for our audience.
We have also kept the way our news is presented which is
hard news to soft news
We believe the newscast should end on a good note and by
presenting hard hitting news first will enable the audience to
get engaged.
The Muslims are represented as a strong community coming together to
fight against the council.
They are presented as one unity as they have the same belief
They are presented as non violent as a common stereotype is that Muslims
are dangerous and violent people, However this was a peaceful protest
which subverts the stereotype that Muslims are violent.
Coming together
as one to fight for
the same cause.
The middle aged white man subverts the stereotype that British white people
are racist as he supported the Muslims for the making of a new mosque.
He also represented unity among different religions and ethnic groups, He
Supported people who have a different faith then him which shows diversity
And support.
Most of the supporters were Asian and the British man was white ,It subverts
the stereotype that Asians and White English people do not get along,
As there are many groups promoting racial hatred e.g. EDL and MDL in the UK.
This is a picture of a EDL
supporter against Muslims.
However the interviewer
was for the making of the
mosque subverting the
stereotype that there is
racial hatred among the
White and Asians.
University students are presented as struggling with finance due to
the rise in university fees.
Students are represented as deprived but ambitious with a passion
to succeed.
.
They represent the underdogs of London
Determined
to succeed
despite the
rise in
university
fees
Our story of the school robbery conforms the stereotype
that East London is full of crimes
It presents East London as an unsafe place to live.
The story also presents East Londoners being vulnerable as
they are in an area with high level of crime
East London is
full of many
youths' that form
gangs to commit
crimes
We wanted a radio station that
is fun and trendy and focuses
mostly on its younger
audience, also engages and
interacts with its audience e.g.
having competitions and
answering questions by the
audience through face book
etc., we also believe the
audience should always be up-
to-date with the latest news and
music around the world.
BBC Radio 1
Population:
52,352,000
Reach (000s): 11,091
Reach Percent: 21
Average hour per
listener: 6.9
Our group have decided that BBC
radio one goes well with our
newscast the reasons for this is
because the remit of Radio 1 is to
entertain and engage a broad range
of young listeners with a mix of
contemporary music and speech. Its
target audience is 15-29 year olds
and it also provides some
programming for younger teenager
, It also offer a range of new
music, supporting emerging artists -
especially those from the UK - and
provide a platform for live music. It
also presents news, documentaries
and campaigns.
We believe that our
newscast is right for BBC
radio1 because their radio
station is not for one
particular ethnicity or
culture instead it’s for
everyone. BBC is funded
by the Government, so
they must provide both
sides when presenting
their news, and on all
cultures and ethnicities.
BBC radio 1 also educates their
audience on worldly affairs and
issues around the world. One of
our beliefs is in order to engage
with the audience you must
interact with them, BBC Radio
1 take in questions through
Facebook and Twitter; we
believe it is good to keep up to
date with the younger audience
as they use social media sites
as a platform to communicate.
BBC Radio 1 also provides education
when presenting their news, they
have a variety e.g. on political
education and health etc. One of
our beliefs is also to educate the
younger audience which is why our
newscast had a story on university
fees also local issues like the
mosque etc.
One of our other ideologies is to
provide entertainment which is why
we have a celebrity story which is
particularly popular with the
younger audience , we also provide
weather and travel report which
BBC do to for its audience.
Is your newscast similar to
their newscast in structure
host time its aired duration
etc.?
BBC Radio 1 presents its headlines first
and then its stories which we do with our
newscast, it presents hard news and then
soft news later on, the hosts of BBC radio1
use a serious tone when presenting hard
news and a light tone when presenting
soft news.BBC also present their stories
for a maximum of a minute depending on
the news.
Your product why is it
right for this station
does it have any
similarities in style
language audience
explain with examples.
A recent news report has
shown New BBC Radio 1
controller Ben Cooper is
facing pressure to steer his
station to a younger audience
after it was claimed the
average age of the station's
listenership had gone up. The
average age of people tuning
in to Radio 1 had risen from
29 to 32 in the past three
years.
We believe that our newscast
could attract the younger
audience because our hosts
are young teenagers therefore
they could relate more to the
listeners when taking
questions etc. We also know
that BBC Radio 1 is mostly
listened to for its music, So
we provide music in the
background whilst presenting
our news, this is unique and is
rarely done, it could be used
as a tool to engage with the
audience.
Age:16-25 year olds
Class: All
Area: London mainly focusing on East London
Gender: Female/Male
Race: All
The particular people we want to attract are EXPLORERS
who seek to discover more.
The purpose of our newscast is to inform people about the
different things that go on around the world. Our newscast
is targeted mainly at the youth therefore we have news
that affect them so that they are aware of it.
To get our audience involved we inform our
audience about our website we also tell
them to participate by asking questions via
Facebook and Twitter.
Through our survey it shows most of
our audience are 16-22 year olds. We
used Facebook and Twitter to allow
our audience interact with our
audience as social media sites are
popular among this age group
Most of audience like listening to
entertainment news which is why we
included a celebrity new story of Speidi
from Big Brother which is a popular show
among the youth and young adults.
Our story was on
Speidi death
threats
64.0% of our audience mostly
like to listen to music on
radio, which is why included
music in the background of
our news stories
To attract and engage our
audience we added music
in the background of our
newscast to create a
certain mood and
atmosphere of the part
Our radio targets mostly 16-25yr olds To
attract our audience we used more local
news because proximity is a key news value
in local news. This allows our audience to
relate to issues that affect them.
We did a story on
the rise in
university fees
that affect the
youth as in a few
years they would
make the decision
whether they want
to go university or
not
To attract our audience we used simple and
formal language so they all are able to
understand the news stories and catchy
storylines.
To also attract our audience we had to make
sure the duration of the stories were not very
long, our radio targets mainly the youth who get
easily bored. Therefore, the maximum duration
of a story was a minute, or just over.
Technology is advancing and changing
Minimisation is in demand and increasing
Technological convergence allows you to
have many platforms on one device
Technology is expanding and advancing
continuously
Many devices are now converged
E.g. of technological convergence- IPhone
enables you to download games on your
phone as well as speak on the phone
Radio has changed from Analogue and Digital
E.g. of digital technology
Radio FM/AM
Laptop
Computer
Advantages of Digital
Better quality sound
No interference
Easier to use
Parallel medium is when you can listen to the
radio whilst performing other tasks e.g.
listening to the radio whilst Ironing. Radio is
very popular among the public because it
enables you to get on with your daily life
whilst consuming radio
Also The Big listen survey found that 61%
listen to radio on their mobile phones.
Due to technological convergence this
enables us to hear radio on different
platforms e.g. internet ,iPod.
The big Listen survey took place in 2007, by Radio Centre. Its purpose was
to range a study of the UK radio audience.
DAB stands for digital audio broadcasting
DAB is now popular among radios
DAB radios automatically tune to all the available stations, offering a list for the user to select from.
It gives better reception quality
More stations are available
Disadvantages: Not all areas of the UK are currently covered by DAB.
DAB is very expensive to transmit.
I used a questionnaire for my radio to find
out more of the audience
This site gives qualitative data and enables
you to find out more about your audience
This site could also be posted on social media
sites such as Facebook which I have done to
get my audience to fill in the questionnaire.
Audacity is a programme that enables you to
cut copy and edit and insert sound.
I have used Audacity numerous amount of
time, Audacity helps save time as it does not
take long to edit inserts .
I have learnt that organisation is crucial for media, during this
course I had to organise a meeting with my Government &
Politics teacher for a interview, to do this I had to inform him
about the dates I am available and the type of questions I will
ask.
Organisation is vital in order to have a successful newscast, Our
group had to organise a time and date for when we are all
without it clashing with our other work.
Without organisation you cannot complete your work and meet
deadlines, to make sure we meet deadlines we met up regularly
to suggest improvements etc.
I was given the task of doing an interview, to do this I had to plan the
type of questions I will ask my interviewee, I had to make sure they are
open questions and be very careful about what I say.
I had to make sure my questions were not biased and that I will present
different views
Our group also planned what type of radio station we will have and who
are target audience will be, in order to do this we created a survey
monkey to find out more about our audience, so we can plan the type of
news we will be presenting
Planning helps you to keep up to date and be organised with your work, it
also gives you an outline of what to do.
During this course I have learnt that research is vital for our
newscast, I had to make sure the news was up to date and
accurate. I had to make sure the type of information I present is
not biased and will put others in harm.
I have learnt that whilst researching it is important to only select
relevant parts, as information that is not relevant will make the
story drag on and the audience may loose concentration.
I have learnt that to work with others you must be
understanding, as people in the group will have different views
from you. We had to work together and agree on the same ideas
that we will present. In order for it to be fair we voted on what
will be the best for our radio newscast
I have learnt that as a group we have to be well organised , we
had to make dates were we all are available to do the work so
that it doesn’t clash with our other work. We had to also take
roles whilst doing the production so the work is distributed fairly.
I have learnt if one member of the group is not there and has not
met the deadline then the group must work together to produce
it, as in the media industry news must be presented on time
